Replace <player> with your in-game name. Java and Bedrock use different world settings, and enabling cheats in Bedrock permanently disables achievements in that world.
Get a command block with the /give command
- Make sure commands are enabled and you have permission to use them in the world.
- Open the in-game chat.
- Enter
/give <player> command_block, replacing<player>with your player name, then run the command. Minecraft’s commands guide explains that commands begin with a slash and that/givegives a specified item to a player. Its Creator Tools page gives the command-block example/give [playername] command_block.
Enable commands in your world
Java single-player
When creating a world, enable Allow Commands. For an existing world, open World Options and enable the setting there. Minecraft’s commands guide covers the Java setting.

Bedrock single-player
Open the world’s settings, select the Game tab, and turn on Allow Cheats. Be aware that Minecraft says enabling cheats permanently prevents achievement unlocks in that world, even if you later turn cheats off. See the official commands guide for details.
If you are playing on a server or Realm
Command access depends on your permission level. If you are on someone else’s server, ask its owner or administrator whether they can grant the needed access or provide the block. Owners of their own server or Realm generally have permission by default. The permission guidance is in Minecraft’s commands guide.

What to expect after you get the block
Command blocks let you run commands in-game rather than entering them through chat. Getting the item is only the first step; placing, configuring, and activating it are separate tasks. Minecraft’s creator article, Exploring Minecraft Commands, points to a dedicated Getting Started with Command Blocks tutorial for those next steps.
