Yes. You can host a Starbound server without paying a hosting company by running Starbound’s dedicated server on a computer you control. SteamCMD downloads and updates the server files; you configure the universe, open the network path for friends, and keep the computer running whenever you want the world available.

This is not cost-free in the broader sense: you supply the computer, electricity, internet bandwidth, router configuration, firewall rules, backups, updates and troubleshooting. A managed host charges a recurring fee to handle much of that work. The steps below show the dependable no-hosting-fee method first, then a Linux/Docker alternative and the trade-offs involved.

Starbound includes an official dedicated-server executable. Instead of paying a company to run it, you install that executable on a Windows or Linux machine and let your friends connect to it. The server stores the universe and player data separately from the game clients, so the host computer must remain online for anyone else to play in that universe.
Steam Support’s current guidance is that Steam game servers use SteamCMD to download and update their server files. For Starbound, the Steam application ID used by the commonly referenced update script is 211820. A Steam Community guide using that ID was last updated September 21, 2025. Treat commands as examples and check SteamCMD’s output for the exact installation path and any authentication prompt.

Self-hosting versus a managed host
A paid managed host can provide an instant server and take over some maintenance, but the supplied evidence does not establish current provider prices, player limits, locations or affiliate terms. Use this comparison to decide whether avoiding a monthly bill is worth the additional work.

Windows: install a free dedicated server step by step
1. Prepare a host computer
Use a Windows computer that can remain powered on for the sessions you want to host. Sign in with an account allowed to install software and create a dedicated folder such as C:StarboundServer. Keeping server files outside the ordinary game-install directory makes updates, backups and permissions easier to understand.
Before inviting anyone, decide who will administer the server, where world backups will be stored and whether the computer will be used for other demanding tasks while the server is running. A home server does not need to be your gaming PC, but sleep mode, automatic shutdown and aggressive power-saving settings can interrupt the world.
2. Install SteamCMD and download Starbound
SteamCMD is Valve’s command-line utility for obtaining and updating dedicated-server files. Download it from Steam’s official documentation, extract it to a folder you control, and run it once so it can complete its self-update.
The Starbound update script used by the community guide targets application ID 211820. A typical SteamCMD invocation is:
steamcmd +force_install_dir "C:StarboundServer" +app_update 211820 validate +quitRun the command from the SteamCMD directory, or use the full path to steamcmd.exe. SteamCMD may display a login requirement or other prompt; follow the message shown by your installation rather than assuming anonymous access will always work. The validate option checks downloaded files and can take longer than a normal update. Repeat the update command when you deliberately upgrade the server.

When the command finishes, confirm that the destination contains the Starbound server executable and supporting files. If SteamCMD reports an error, correct the path or permissions first; do not proceed with a partially downloaded installation.
3. Run the server once to create its files
Open the installation folder and launch starbound_server.exe. The first run creates the storage directories and configuration files the server needs. Let it run long enough to finish initialization, then stop it cleanly from the console window.
Look for starbound_server.config in the generated configuration area. Open it with a text editor that preserves JSON syntax. Add a server user and an administrator password using the file’s existing structure. Keep the password private and avoid pasting a live password into a public guide, chat room or batch file shared with friends.
Make a backup copy of the original configuration before editing. A missing comma, unmatched quote or other JSON error can prevent startup. If the server refuses to launch after an edit, restore the backup and reapply one change at a time.
4. Start it directly or with a restart monitor
You can double-click starbound_server.exe for a manual session, or launch it from a batch file so the working directory is predictable. A restart monitor is useful for a private server that should recover from an accidental crash. The commonly circulated Windows example waits 30 seconds and relaunches the process after it exits.
That delay is only an example, not a promise of uptime. A monitor can repeatedly restart a process that is failing because of a bad configuration, a missing file or an incompatible mod. Watch the console and log output before increasing restart automation. Add a normal shutdown procedure so you can stop the process without risking a world save.

5. Allow the program through Windows Firewall
When Windows first blocks the executable, allow starbound_server.exe on the network profiles you actually use. You can review the rule later in Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security. Permit inbound traffic only for the required executable and port; do not disable the firewall globally.
If you change the server’s listening port, update every related setting and the router rule together. A firewall rule for the old port will not help clients reach a server listening elsewhere.

The Game Server Manager guide documents Starbound’s default server/query port as 21025/TCP. In your router’s administration page, create a port-forwarding rule that sends TCP port 21025 to the local IP address of the host computer. Give the host a stable DHCP reservation or static local address; otherwise a reboot can assign a different address and silently break the rule.
Forwarding exposes a service from your home network to the internet. Use a strong administrator password, keep the server and operating system updated, and remove the forwarding rule when you no longer need outside access. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound forwarding may not work even when the router appears correctly configured; ask the provider whether you receive a reachable public IPv4 address or use a network arrangement that supplies one.
Friends on the same home network can usually connect through the host’s private address. Friends elsewhere need the public address (and the non-default port if you changed it). Do not publish your home address more widely than necessary.
Linux and Docker option
Linux users can run the community-maintained Didstopia/starbound-server Docker implementation. It packages SteamCMD and the server in a container, while Docker handles process isolation and repeatable deployment. Because it is community maintained rather than an official publisher image, read its current instructions before deploying and verify that the image version, environment variables and volume paths still match your setup.

Persistent data and credentials
The implementation documents Steam credentials as environment variables. Store them securely and avoid committing them to a public compose file or shell-history archive. It also documents an optional update-skip setting for cases where you do not want the container to update on every start.
Mount the following locations to persistent storage:
/steamcmd/starboundfor the installed server files and configuration./steamcmd/starbound/storage/universefor world data./steamcmd/starbound/modsfor installed mods.
Without persistent mounts, recreating the container can discard the files that make your universe and configuration unique. Back up the host directories, not just the running container, and test that a fresh container can read the backup before calling the arrangement reliable.
Networking the container
Publish the container’s Starbound port to the Linux host, then forward the same external TCP port from your router to that host. If you select a non-default port, keep the Docker mapping, server configuration, router rule and client connection details consistent. Check the container logs after startup for bind errors, missing files or failed updates before troubleshooting the router.

Configure friends, accounts and access safely
The server user and administrator password in starbound_server.config protect administrative actions; they do not replace network security. Give ordinary players only the access they need, and change the administrator password if it has been shared accidentally. Keep a private record of which configuration file is authoritative so a later update does not overwrite your edits.
Tell friends the address, port and any required account details through a private channel. If your public address changes periodically, you may need to send the new address again. The setup described provides no built-in dynamic-DNS service or a guaranteed fixed-address option, so do not promise friends a permanent hostname without arranging one separately.

Install and maintain mods without join failures
Every connecting client must have a compatible mod set. The Steam Community guide describes downloading Workshop items with SteamCMD and adding their paths to sbinit.config. Follow the mod author’s load-order and version instructions, then apply the same set to the server and every client.
- Record each mod’s name, version and Workshop path in a private manifest.
- Install and test one mod at a time on a copy of the universe.
- Update clients and the server together rather than allowing one side to drift.
- Back up the universe before removing or replacing a mod that adds blocks, items, quests or world-generation data.
- If players cannot join after a mod change, temporarily restore the previous known-good set and compare the server and client lists character by character.
A mod mismatch can stop a player from joining even when port forwarding and passwords are correct. Treat a recent mod change as the first suspect when network tests succeed but the game rejects a connection during loading.

Backups, updates and uptime
Back up the universe before maintenance
Stop the server cleanly before copying its world data so files are not changing during the backup. On Windows, copy the Starbound storage and configuration directories to a separate drive or another computer. For Docker, back up the persistent host directories, especially storage/universe and mods. Keep more than one dated backup and periodically confirm that you can restore one.
Update in a controlled window
Tell players when the server will be offline, stop the process, run the SteamCMD update for application ID 211820, and start the server again. Check the console for errors before inviting everyone back. If a new server build or mod causes trouble, stop, restore the last backup and document what changed.
Keep the machine reachable
Disable automatic sleep for the hosting session, ensure the server starts after a planned reboot, and verify that the local IP reservation remains in place. A restart monitor helps with a crashed process, but it cannot repair a failed internet connection, a powered-off computer, a full disk or an invalid configuration.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server executable closes immediately
- Run it from a command window so the error remains visible.
- Restore the last valid
starbound_server.configbackup and check JSON punctuation. - Confirm SteamCMD completed the download and run the update with
validate. - Remove the newest mod temporarily and test an unmodded start.
Friends on the internet cannot connect, but you can
- Have a friend test from outside your home network; a test from the host itself does not prove that forwarding works.
- Confirm the router forwards TCP 21025, or the custom port you selected, to the host’s current private IP.
- Check the Windows firewall rule or Docker port publication.
- Verify that your internet connection supplies a reachable public address rather than carrier-grade NAT.
Everyone is rejected after a configuration change
- Compare the server’s configured port with the router, firewall and client connection details.
- Check that the administrator and player credentials were entered exactly as configured.
- Restore the previous configuration, start the server, then reintroduce one change at a time.
Only one player fails to join
- Compare that player’s mod list and versions with the server’s list.
- Have the player update or reinstall the mismatched Workshop item.
- Check whether the player is using the same address and port as everyone else.
What your “free” setup still consumes
Self-hosting replaces a hosting bill with resources you already own or must supply. The exact electricity, bandwidth and hardware cost depends on your location and equipment, and no independent benchmark or player-capacity figure is established here.

Decision checklist
Choose the home-hosted route when you already have a computer that can stay online, are comfortable editing configuration files and router settings, and want maximum control over mods and world files. Choose a managed service only after checking its current price, supported Starbound version, backup policy, mod controls, data-center location and cancellation terms. The existence of an “instant” option does not establish that every provider supports your desired player count or configuration.
For most small groups, the practical free path is: install SteamCMD, update application 211820, launch the server once, set credentials, configure firewall and TCP 21025 forwarding, synchronize mods, and maintain backups. Once those duties are acceptable, you have a functioning Starbound server without a separate hosting subscription.
