For a short session with friends, a PC player can instead use Multiplayer > Host in the game. That listen-server option is PC-only. Xbox and PlayStation 5 players can join a PC-hosted or dedicated server when the server’s platform and crossplay settings allow them, but consoles cannot create the player-hosted server.

Choose the hosting model first
Your choice determines how much networking and maintenance you must handle.

Bohemia Interactive lists both local hosting and third-party hosting as supported approaches. A provider does not remove the need to understand the JSON configuration, ports, mods, or crossplay restrictions; it usually changes who performs the operating-system and network work.

Plan the server before installing it
Decide who should be able to join, which scenario will run, and whether the server is temporary or persistent. Write these decisions down before editing the configuration.
- Host location: choose a Windows PC, a Linux machine, or a managed provider. A home host needs a router that can forward traffic and an internet connection with a reachable IPv4 address.
- Audience: private friends, a password-protected community, or a public browser listing. The player limit, visibility, and administration settings should match this choice.
- Platforms: decide whether PC-only access is acceptable or whether Xbox and PlayStation 5 players must join. Crossplay and platform settings in the configuration control eligibility.
- Scenario and add-ons: select the official scenario and the exact mod set before opening the server to others. Every client must be able to download and load the same required content.
- Maintenance window: reserve time for server-branch updates, mod changes, log checks, and restarts. A persistent server needs an owner who will respond when a service or download fails.
Install the official dedicated-server files
The official hosting guidance directs administrators to SteamCMD and provides stable and experimental server branches. Install the branch you intend to run and record it; mixing an experimental server with an otherwise stable community can create avoidable compatibility problems.
- Prepare an account and directory. Use a dedicated operating-system account where practical, create a folder with enough space for the server files and downloaded add-ons, and give that account permission to read and write the folder. Keep configuration and log files in a location that is included in your backup plan.
- Install SteamCMD. Use Valve’s SteamCMD tool to download the Arma Reforger dedicated-server application. In SteamCMD, select the stable branch for a normal community deployment or the experimental branch only when you intentionally want to test it. The exact application identifier and branch syntax can change, so use the current values shown in Bohemia Interactive’s hosting documentation rather than copying an old command from a forum post.
- Verify the branch and files. After the download completes, check that the server executable and its supporting directories are present. Do not start configuration work against an incomplete download. On a managed host, confirm in its panel which Reforger branch is installed.
- Keep the server separate from the game client. A dedicated server does not require a player to launch the full game on the same machine. If you also play on that PC, place the server files in a separate directory and watch CPU, memory, disk, and network use.
Linux is supported, but containerized deployments have an extra failure mode: the address registered by the server can be the container’s private, unreachable IP. If clients cannot connect, configure the bind and register addresses to the reachable host address as described in the official Linux/container guidance.
Create the JSON server configuration
Arma Reforger reads a JSON configuration file, and parameter names are case-sensitive. A misspelled key, incorrect capitalization, invalid comma, or malformed quotation mark can prevent startup or leave a setting at its default.
Build the file from the current official configuration reference rather than from an unrelated game version. At minimum, review these groups of settings:

- Identity: the server name that appears in the browser and any description or visibility setting used by your community.
- Scenario: the world and mission scenario that should load on startup.
- Player capacity: the maximum number of clients and any join restrictions appropriate to the machine and connection.
- Platform and crossplay: the client platforms permitted to connect. Enable the combination you actually test; allowing a platform in the browser does not make an incompatible mod set work on that platform.
- Add-ons: the mod identifiers and versions required by the scenario. Keep the list deterministic and remove unused entries rather than leaving several experimental versions enabled.
- Network identity: the bind address, public or registered address, and public port when you are not using the defaults. If you change a port here, change the router forwarding and firewall rule to the same value.
- Validation and administration: retain
fastValidationset totrue. Configure administrators and access controls using the fields in the current reference, then test those controls with a non-owner account.
Store one known-good configuration as a backup before changing mods or network values. Make one logical change at a time so a failed launch can be traced to the last edit. A JSON-aware editor can identify unmatched braces and commas, but it cannot tell you that a correctly spelled value is unsuitable for your scenario.

The documented default public hosting port is UDP 2001. Internet clients will not reach a home server merely because the process is running; the router must forward the port to the host, and the host firewall must allow inbound UDP traffic.
- Give the host a stable local address. Use a DHCP reservation or a fixed local address so a router rule does not point to yesterday’s address after a reboot.
- Create the router rule. Forward external UDP port 2001 to UDP port 2001 on the server’s local address. If your configuration uses a different public port, forward that exact port instead.
- Create the host-firewall rule. Permit inbound UDP traffic for the selected port and, where your firewall supports it, scope the rule to the dedicated-server program or service. Ensure the rule applies to the network profile the host is using.
- Check the public address. Give friends the public IPv4 address and port shown by your configuration or hosting panel, not the server’s private address such as 192.168.x.x. If your ISP places you behind carrier-grade NAT, ordinary inbound forwarding may not work; a managed host or a different network arrangement may be necessary.
- Remember the IPv6 limitation. The official configuration documentation states that IPv6 is not supported. Plan for IPv4 reachability and do not advertise an IPv6-only address.
When a public port is changed, three values must agree: the JSON network setting, the router’s destination rule, and the firewall allowance. A mismatch produces the same symptom as a closed port, even though the server process appears healthy.
Launch the dedicated server safely
From the directory containing the executable, start the process with the configuration file:
ArmaReforgerServer.exe -config "path/to/config.json"Use an absolute path when a service wrapper or scheduled task might start in a different working directory. Keep the console or service logs available while you perform the first connection test; startup errors, failed add-on downloads, and address registration problems are much easier to diagnose in real time.

For local scenario or mod testing, the documented -server, -addonsDir, and -addons parameters can launch a world with local add-ons. Use that mode to validate a mod or scenario before placing it on a public server, then return to the normal configuration-driven launch for production.
Apply the two resource safeguards before inviting players:
- Keep
fastValidationenabled. It is the documented configuration recommendation and helps the server validate content promptly. - Set
-maxFPS. Bohemia Interactive recommends a limit in the 60–120 range. Choose a value your hardware can sustain and watch CPU usage after players and mods are active. Without a cap, the server process can consume all available resources.
Install and test mods
Mods are supplied through the server’s add-on settings or the local add-on startup parameters. Treat the mod list as part of the server’s versioned configuration, not as an informal list sent in chat.
- Record each mod’s exact identifier and version in the JSON or the provider’s equivalent control-panel fields.
- Start the server and wait for its add-on validation and download work to finish before testing a client.
- Join from a clean client profile or a test account so you can see what a new player experiences. Allow the client to complete Workshop downloads instead of cancelling and retrying repeatedly.
- Test the scenario’s first spawn, key scripted systems, and a map change if the community uses one. Remove a mod that causes a startup or backend error, then add it back only after confirming its identifier and version.
- Repeat the test on every platform you intend to allow. Bohemia’s support FAQ states:
Yes. Arma Reforger supports mods on Xbox and PS5, but available storage space and performance limits may differ from PC.
Console support therefore does not guarantee identical capacity or performance.
Crossplay settings decide which platforms may join, while the mod set decides whether those clients can actually load the scenario. Test both together; a browser listing that permits consoles is not proof that a particular PC-focused mod is usable on them.
How to host a short game for friends
If you do not need a persistent public instance, the fastest route is the in-game player-hosted server. On a PC, open Multiplayer > Host, choose the scenario and available session settings, and invite friends through the game’s normal join flow. Keep the PC connected and the game running for the duration of the match.

This option is not a way to host from Xbox or PlayStation 5: official guidance identifies player hosting as PC-only. Console players can join a compatible PC-hosted session, subject to the session’s platform and crossplay settings. For a world that must continue while the owner is offline, switch to a dedicated server instead.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Choose self-hosting when control and hands-on administration matter and your network can accept inbound IPv4 traffic. Choose a managed service when predictable public reachability and reduced infrastructure work are worth a recurring fee. Verify current Reforger compatibility, locations, backups, resource limits, and terms before paying for a plan.

A local connection can succeed even when internet players are blocked by the router or firewall. Perform the acceptance test from a different network, such as a friend’s connection or a mobile hotspot.
- Search for the exact server name and confirm the expected scenario and player limit.
- Join using the public IPv4 address and port, not the private LAN address.
- Confirm that the server accepts the intended PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5 platforms and rejects platforms you did not enable.
- Let a fresh client complete every required mod download, then verify that the scenario starts and a player can spawn.
- Test administrator controls with the account that will actually moderate the community.
- Stop and restart the process once to ensure the configuration, add-ons, and launch command work after a clean boot.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server is missing from the browser
Check UDP 2001 forwarding, the host-firewall rule, and the public address and port first. Confirm that the browser is not filtering by platform, region, scenario, or full servers. If you changed the port in JSON, compare all three network values again. A server bound to an unreachable local address will also fail to appear to outside clients.
Clients cannot connect to a Linux or Docker host
Inspect the address the process registers with the backend. If it is the container’s private IP, outside clients cannot route to it. Set the bind and register addresses to the reachable host or public-facing address according to the documented Linux deployment guidance, then restart and test from another network.

The server reports a missing mod or backend error
Compare every mod ID and version in the JSON with the intended release. Let clients finish Workshop downloads; interrupted downloads or temporary service problems can require a retry. Test the complete set on each permitted platform, because a mod that loads on PC may exceed console storage or performance limits.
CPU usage is excessive
Set -maxFPS within the recommended 60–120 range, then observe the process while players are connected. Remove unnecessary add-ons, check for a runaway scenario, and inspect logs for repeated errors. Omitting the cap can allow the process to consume all available resources.

Restore the last known-good JSON, validate punctuation and capitalization, and reapply one change at a time. Verify that the scenario and add-on identifiers are complete and that the launch command points to the intended file rather than an old copy in another directory.
Operate a persistent server
- Back up before every change: save the JSON, add-on list, launch parameters, and administrator settings together so a rollback reproduces the previous state.
- Change one dependency at a time: update the server branch, scenario, or mod set separately and test after each change.
- Monitor logs and resources: watch CPU, memory, disk space, network traffic, startup errors, and repeated client-download failures.
- Announce maintenance: tell players when a restart or branch change will occur, especially when a mod update invalidates existing clients.
- Keep access controlled: use the documented administrator and visibility settings, and test them with a normal player account.
- Document the network: record the host’s local address, public port, router rule, firewall rule, and public IPv4 endpoint so another administrator can restore service.
The reliable 2026 pattern is straightforward: use a dedicated process for persistence, a case-sensitive configuration for the scenario and platform policy, UDP 2001 (or a deliberately coordinated replacement) for reachability, and a capped server frame rate for resource control. A PC listen server remains the practical choice for a quick friends-only session, while consoles join rather than host.
