Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIn Java Edition 1.21.5-style syntax, enable commands and run /give @p minecraft:netherite_sword[enchantments={sharpness:255}]. It gives the nearest player a netherite sword with Sharpness 255. This syntax is edition- and version-specific; do not paste it into Bedrock Edition.
Java Edition: give yourself a Sharpness 255 sword
With commands available in a Java world or server, enter:
/give @p minecraft:netherite_sword[enchantments={sharpness:255}]
The @p target selects the nearest player. To give the sword to a named player instead, replace @p with that player’s username. The item is a netherite sword, and the enchantment specified is Sharpness; change the item ID or enchantment only if you want a different sword or enchantment.

Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.5 notes document enchantment-component levels as integers from 0 to 255, making 255 the documented upper bound. The 1.21.5 notes show the simplified inline format used above. Mojang’s Java 1.20.5 notes and Java 1.21.5 notes describe the relevant component syntax; the Mojang bug-tracker entry on the level 255 cap records the command cap history.
Why older commands may not work
Java changed item commands to use components in 1.20.5, then simplified the enchantments component in 1.21.5. Tutorials using older brace-based NBT item syntax may therefore fail in current versions. Use the format that matches your installed Java version; if the command is rejected, check that version’s command suggestions and release notes rather than raising the level beyond 255.

Bedrock Edition: use a different command system
Do not use the Java square-bracket command in Bedrock. Microsoft’s Bedrock reference documents /enchant <player> <enchantment> [level] for enchanting the selected item, and separately documents Bedrock’s /give command for receiving items. Those references do not establish a supported vanilla method to give a Bedrock sword Sharpness 255.
See Microsoft’s Bedrock /enchant reference and Bedrock /give reference for the edition’s documented syntax and requirements.

Enable commands and check permissions
Commands require permission in the world or server. In Java single-player, commands can be enabled when creating a world; on multiplayer servers, whether you can run them depends on your permissions. Minecraft’s command guide explains command access and enabling cheats. In Bedrock single-player, enabling cheats in world settings permanently disables achievements for that world, even if you turn cheats off later.
