Start with the game’s own Steam Store requirements, then reduce background load, check available memory and drivers, and lower demanding graphics settings. Use Steam’s in-game performance monitor while the problem occurs to see what is under strain. These steps can improve smoothness, but there is no universal setting or guaranteed FPS gain—and a PC below a game’s requirements may be limited by its hardware.
Check whether your PC can run this specific game
Open the game’s Steam Store page and compare its listed operating system and hardware requirements with your computer. A general label such as “low-end PC” is less useful than checking the actual game and your components. Steam cautions that meeting the listed requirements does not guarantee high frame rates; systems close to the minimum may still encounter performance or launch problems. Try the changes most likely to help first
Close unnecessary apps

Check available memory
On Windows, open Task Manager and check how much memory is available while the game is slow. Steam’s general troubleshooting guidance suggests aiming for at least 1,000 MB available, with 2,000 MB or more safer. These are Steam’s troubleshooting heuristics, not a universal requirement or a guarantee of smooth gameplay. Update drivers from the maker
Check for current CPU, graphics, and audio drivers using the official instructions from your computer maker or component manufacturer. Steam notes that outdated drivers may prevent hardware from using its capabilities fully. Avoid third-party driver-download sites; use the relevant manufacturer’s update route instead. Lower graphics demand without guessing
Higher resolutions and video settings that exceed what the hardware can handle can reduce FPS. Change one option at a time, play the same demanding section, and judge whether the gain in smoothness is worth the change in image quality.

- Try lowering the resolution if the game remains slow at its current display resolution.
- Reduce demanding graphics options individually rather than applying an unknown “best settings” preset.

Use the Steam overlay to observe what is happening
Steam’s in-game performance monitor can show FPS, CPU and GPU performance, and system RAM information. Check it while the slowdown is occurring, rather than relying on a reading taken at the menu or when the game is idle. Verify game files for missing content or crashes
Use file verification when the problem includes missing assets or crashes—not as a routine FPS tweak. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, select Installed Files, then click Verify integrity of game files. The process can take several minutes. Steam notes that some files may fail verification normally because they are local configuration files that should not be replaced. Use launch options only when they fit the game
Launch options can override game settings, but Steam’s common performance options apply to Valve Source and GoldSrc games, not most third-party titles. Do not paste generic flags into every game. For a supported Valve title, Steam documents -autoconfig as a way to restore detected video and performance defaults; remove the option after the reset. Know when settings may not be enough
If the computer does not meet the game’s listed requirements, reducing settings may help but cannot necessarily overcome a hardware limit. Steam identifies a video card or memory upgrade as possible ways to improve performance, but the right choice depends on the exact PC model, current components, compatibility, upgradeability, budget, and game.
