How to Get a Zombie Horse in Minecraft Survival (Java and Bedrock)

You can now obtain a zombie horse legitimately in Minecraft Survival. In the Mounts of Mayhem release, zombie horses spawn naturally at night in dark areas, normally with a spear-wielding zombie riding them. Remove the rider, tame the horse as you would a regular horse, equip a saddle, and add horse armor before exposing it to daylight.

The method applies to both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. Older guides that say zombie horses require commands describe earlier versions and are no longer accurate for current Mounts of Mayhem-era releases.

What you need to know before searching

A zombie horse is a passive undead mount, but its initial rider is hostile. The dangerous part of the encounter is the zombie carrying the spear; once separated from that rider, the horse does not attack players. You are looking for a naturally generated horse rather than a special structure, a rare chest, or a command-only entity.

Question Current answer
Can it spawn in Survival? Yes. Natural Survival spawning was added with Mounts of Mayhem.
Where should you search? At night, in darkness; the Java 1.21.11 notes specifically identify plains and savanna biomes as possible locations.
Does it usually have a rider? Yes. The documented encounter is a zombie horse ridden by a zombie carrying an iron spear.
Can the horse itself hurt you? The rider is hostile. A riderless zombie horse is passive toward players.
Can you tame and ride it? Yes. Tame it like a regular horse, then use a saddle to mount and control it.
Will sunlight hurt it? Yes. Horse armor protects a zombie horse from sunlight damage.
Can it disappear? It can despawn like a hostile mob until a player interacts with it and makes it persistent.

Use a version that supports natural spawning

First update Minecraft to a current release that includes Mounts of Mayhem. The feature is documented for both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, while the Java documentation identifies the relevant release as Java 1.21.11. If your world predates the update, launching it in an older version will not make the new natural-spawn rules available.

Back up an important world before changing versions. Then confirm that the game has finished updating and that you are playing the edition you intend to use. A guide written before Mounts of Mayhem may tell you to summon a zombie horse with a command; that advice does not describe the current Survival method.

How to find a naturally spawned zombie horse

1. Prepare for a night search

Take the equipment you normally use for a hostile-mob expedition: food, a weapon, defensive gear, blocks for emergency cover, and a way to mark your route. Bring a saddle if you have one, and keep horse armor available for the moment you secure the mount. The horse is vulnerable to sunlight, so planning its shelter before the encounter prevents a frantic daytime rescue.

You do not need a special item to make a zombie horse appear. The important environmental condition is darkness. Search after nightfall and concentrate on open, dark terrain where a mounted mob is visible from a distance.

2. Check plains and savanna terrain

The Java 1.21.11 release notes say zombie horses can spawn in darkness in plains and savanna biomes. These biomes are useful search areas because their open sight lines make a mounted silhouette easier to spot than one hidden among dense trees or uneven ground.

That wording establishes possible spawning locations, not a guarantee that every plains or savanna night will produce one. No official spawn percentage is published, so do not assume a fixed number of minutes, a guaranteed group size, or a particular distance from the player. Search several dark areas rather than treating one empty field as proof that the feature is not working.

3. Identify the correct encounter

Look for a zombie horse with a zombie on its back. The documented rider carries an iron spear. Because the rider is the hostile component, identify both entities before attacking: striking the rider first lets you handle the horse without treating it as an enemy.

A normal hostile zombie, an ordinary horse, or an unrelated skeleton-horse encounter is not the same event. The distinctive combination is an undead horse, a zombie rider, nighttime darkness, and the spear described in the Java notes.

Remove the rider safely

Minecraft’s official description tells players to unseat the rider. You can defeat or dismount the zombie; either way, your objective is to leave the horse riderless. Keep your attention on the spear-wielding zombie while it is mounted, and use cover if you need a moment to recover.

Do not waste time trying to damage the horse as though it were a hostile mob. The horse is not the threat in this encounter. Once the zombie is gone, verify that no replacement hostile mob is attacking you, then secure the horse before dawn.

  • Approach with enough health and food to survive the rider’s attack.
  • Use terrain, blocks, or a shelter to separate yourself from the spear-bearing zombie.
  • After the rider is removed, stop attacking and switch to interaction with the horse.
  • Keep the animal in darkness while you work, because daylight causes damage.

Tame the zombie horse

A riderless zombie horse is tamed in the same fashion as a regular horse. In practical terms, interact with it to attempt mounting; an unsuccessful attempt throws you off, so repeat the interaction until the normal horse-taming success effect appears. The exact number of attempts is not fixed in the official material, and no taming-time statistic has been published.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stay beside the horse while repeating the process rather than wandering away after each attempt. If the interaction does not begin taming, check that the hostile rider has actually been removed and that you are targeting the horse rather than a block or another mob. Once the game accepts the horse as tamed, move immediately to equipment and shelter.

What successful taming changes

Taming makes the horse yours, but it does not by itself give you useful movement control. A saddle is required to ride and direct a tamed zombie horse. Taming also does not make the mount immune to sunlight; that problem requires horse armor or a covered stable.

Equip a saddle and take control

After taming, open the horse’s equipment interface and place a saddle in the saddle slot. A tamed zombie horse can then be mounted and controlled by a player. Without the saddle, you may be able to sit on the animal, but you cannot use it as a practical controllable mount.

Controls differ by platform, so use the normal interaction button for your edition to mount and the standard movement controls to steer. If the horse refuses to respond, dismount and check that the saddle is actually equipped rather than merely present in your inventory. Keep the interface open only while the horse remains protected from sunlight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect it from sunlight with horse armor

Zombie horses burn in sunlight. Horse armor protects them from that sunlight damage, making it the reliable way to use the mount outside at daytime. Until armor is equipped, keep the horse beneath a solid roof, inside a shaded enclosure, or underground.

Prepare the shelter before starting the hunt. A simple roof is enough to stop direct sunlight, but an enclosed pen is safer because it also prevents the newly tamed horse from wandering while you search your inventory. If dawn arrives during taming, move the horse under cover first and finish the equipment process there.

Horse armor is protection from sunlight damage; it is not a substitute for a saddle and does not perform the taming step. The three functions are separate:

  • Taming: establishes ownership.
  • Saddle: enables controlled riding.
  • Horse armor: protects the zombie horse from sunlight.

Make the horse persistent so it does not despawn

Zombie horses can despawn like hostile mobs. The Java 1.21.11 notes state that interacting with one makes it persistent. Therefore, interact with the riderless horse as part of the capture process instead of leaving it standing in the field while you collect supplies.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The safest sequence is to remove the rider, interact to begin taming, complete taming, equip the saddle, and move the horse into a prepared shelter. That series both establishes persistence through interaction and reduces the chance that daylight or a long trip away will cost you the mount.

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition

Mounts of Mayhem makes the natural Survival feature available on both editions. The broad method is therefore the same: find the mounted zombie at night, remove the rider, tame the horse, saddle it, and protect it from sunlight.

Comparison point Java Edition Bedrock Edition
Natural Survival availability Supported in the Mounts of Mayhem-era release; Java documentation identifies version 1.21.11. Supported in the Mounts of Mayhem-era release.
Spawn condition Darkness; plains and savanna are identified as possible biomes. Natural spawning is supported, but the available documentation does not establish additional Bedrock-only biome or rate details.
Rider encounter Zombie rider with an iron spear is documented. The feature is available, but the cited material does not establish a separate Bedrock rider specification.
Taming and riding Tame like a regular horse; saddle required for controlled riding. Use the regular horse interaction and equipment controls for Bedrock.
Commands Not needed for the natural Survival method. Not needed for the natural Survival method; command-syntax parity is not established here.

Do not assume that a command copied from a Java tutorial will work unchanged on Bedrock. If you are playing Survival, there is no reason to depend on a command fallback when the current release supports natural spawning. Update both the game and your expectations: older command-only instructions are the source of much of the confusion around this mount.

Zombie horse attributes and behavior

Health

Zombie horses have 25 health points, equal to 12.5 hearts. That value comes from the Java Edition 1.21.11 release notes. It describes the horse’s health pool, not a promise that every encounter will be equally safe: the mounted zombie can still injure you before you remove it, and sunlight can damage the horse afterward.

Movement and jumping

Movement speed and jump strength are variable and are set when the horse spawns. Consequently, one zombie horse may feel faster or jump higher than another. There is no official fixed speed or jump number in the supplied release information, so do not judge a mount by a value from an unrelated horse guide.

Temperament

The horse is passive toward players once the hostile rider is gone. That does not mean it will remain in exactly the same location if left unsecured. Use a pen, walls, or a stable while you gather equipment, and complete an interaction promptly so the horse becomes persistent.

A reliable capture workflow

For a low-risk expedition, organize the task into three phases rather than improvising after you find the mob.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before nightfall

  1. Update to a Mounts of Mayhem-era version on Java or Bedrock.
  2. Prepare food, combat equipment, blocks for cover, a saddle, and horse armor.
  3. Build or select a roofed holding area near the plains or savanna you plan to search.
  4. Mark your route so you can return before daylight.

During the encounter

  1. Search dark plains or savanna terrain after night begins.
  2. Confirm that the target is a zombie horse with a zombie rider.
  3. Defeat or dismount the iron-spear-wielding rider while avoiding unnecessary damage to the horse.
  4. Interact with the riderless horse to begin taming and to establish persistence.
  5. Repeat the regular horse-taming interaction until the horse is tamed.

After taming

  1. Move the horse under a roof immediately if dawn is approaching.
  2. Equip a saddle so you can control it.
  3. Equip horse armor to protect it from sunlight.
  4. Lead or ride it into a secure stable and leave it there when you are not using it.

Troubleshooting common failures

“I searched all night and found nothing.”

One empty search does not establish a spawn-rate failure; no official percentage is published. Confirm that you are in a current Mounts of Mayhem-era version, that the area is genuinely dark, and that you searched more than one eligible open area. Plains and savanna are documented possibilities, not a guarantee for every night.

“The horse keeps disappearing.”

You may have left it without interacting with it, allowing hostile-mob despawn behavior to apply. Interact with the horse during the capture process, then move it to a secure enclosure. Also check that it is not dying in sunlight while you are away.

“I tamed it but cannot steer.”

Taming and control are separate. Equip a saddle in the horse’s equipment interface, then mount again. A tamed horse without a saddle is not a controllable riding mount.

“It is taking damage in the morning.”

Zombie horses burn in sunlight. Put the animal under a solid roof and equip horse armor. Until armor is fitted, do not leave it in an open pen or assume its undead appearance makes it immune to daylight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The rider keeps killing me before I can interact.”

The rider is the hostile part of the encounter. Use cover and blocks to separate yourself from the spear-wielding zombie, defeat or dismount it first, and only then attempt to tame the horse. A riderless zombie horse is passive, so the fight should end before the taming step begins.

What older guides get wrong

Several recurring claims come from versions before Mounts of Mayhem. The most important outdated claim is that zombie horses are obtainable only through commands. Natural Survival spawning is now documented, so a command is not required for a current world.

Other unsupported shortcuts are equally risky: there is no published universal spawn percentage, no guaranteed number of horses per night, and no documented promise that every biome or every edition uses identical rider details. Use the confirmed conditions—darkness, documented plains and savanna possibilities, and the mounted zombie encounter—instead of treating an old tutorial’s guesses as rules.

Quick checklist

  • Current Mounts of Mayhem-era Java or Bedrock version installed.
  • Nighttime search planned in dark terrain.
  • Plains or savanna area selected as the first search location.
  • Food, combat gear, blocks, saddle, and horse armor ready.
  • Roofed stable prepared before the encounter.
  • Zombie rider removed before attempting to tame.
  • Riderless horse interacted with so it becomes persistent.
  • Regular horse-taming interaction completed.
  • Saddle equipped for control.
  • Horse armor equipped before daytime exposure.

Final answer

In current Minecraft, find a zombie horse at night in a dark area—especially plains or savanna—where it is being ridden by a zombie with an iron spear. Remove the rider, tame the passive horse like a normal horse, interact with it so it persists, then equip a saddle for control and horse armor for sunlight protection. The process works in both Java and Bedrock Edition in the Mounts of Mayhem era.
