To get the White Orchard Gwent cards in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, beat the Scholar, Aldert Geert, in the tavern for Zoltan Chivay, then buy five cards from the innkeeper, Elsa. If Elsa has left, Bram, the rescued merchant near the village entrance, is reported to sell her remaining cards. A missed Zoltan may be found under the Hanged Man’s Tree in Velen.
Beat the Scholar for Zoltan Chivay
- During the main quest “Lilac and Gooseberries,” go to the White Orchard tavern and speak with Aldert Geert, the Scholar.
- Accept his Gwent lesson and win the match. The guide reports that you can replay the match if you lose; beating him awards Zoltan Chivay and the starter deck.
Gamer Guides’ White Orchard walkthrough and Prima Games’ White Orchard guide identify Aldert as the tutorial opponent and Zoltan as the reward.

If you leave White Orchard before collecting them

After Elsa leaves for Novigrad, check Bram, the rescued merchant near the village entrance. Prima Games reports that he takes over Elsa’s remaining listed card inventory. Check what he has available rather than assuming a card you already bought will be available again.
Missed Zoltan
If Aldert is no longer available in the tavern and you missed his reward, Gamer Guides and the Gwent Cards Checklist report that Zoltan can be recovered under the Hanged Man’s Tree in Velen. The checklist page references patch 1.08, so treat this as guide-reported recovery advice, not a guarantee for every platform, patch, or save state.

White Orchard versus the rest of the prologue
The Nilfgaardian Nobleman in the palace garden at Vizima is a separate Gwent match later in the prologue, after the White Orchard main quests. Winning gives a random card, according to Gamer Guides, but it is not a White Orchard card source.
The cited guides cover The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and do not establish that recovery behavior is identical across all platforms or game versions. Gamer Guides lists PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S; its entry reports a last update of 22 August 2024.
