“Ancient armor” can mean either Ancient Shadow armor or Ancient Cobalt armor in Terraria. You can farm the corresponding enemies for each set, or use Shimmer to convert regular Shadow or Jungle armor if you already have it. The ancient versions are appearance variants, not upgrades.
Which ancient armor set do you mean?
The two pre-Hardmode sets have different sources and counterparts. Ancient Cobalt is associated with Jungle armor, not the separate Cobalt armor made from Cobalt ore.

These rates are listed by the Official Terraria Wiki’s Ancient Shadow armor reference and its Ancient Cobalt armor reference. They are per-piece chances, not a chance to receive a complete set.
How to get Ancient Shadow armor
Farm Eaters of Souls
Kill Eaters of Souls in the Corruption. The helmet, scalemail, and greaves each have a listed 1/525 (0.19%) drop chance. An Eater of Souls can drop only one of the three Ancient Shadow pieces, so the set must be collected across multiple drops. See the drop details.

Convert Shadow armor with Shimmer
If you have regular Shadow armor, place a piece in Shimmer to convert it to the matching Ancient Shadow piece. The conversion works in reverse as well. The Official Terraria Wiki’s Shadow armor page lists this conversion for the current main Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions.
If you need to make the regular set first, Shadow armor is crafted from Demonite Bars and Shadow Scales at an Iron or Lead Anvil. The full set’s recipe totals 60 Demonite Bars and 45 Shadow Scales.

How to get Ancient Cobalt armor
Farm Hornets or Man Eaters
In the Underground Jungle, kill Hornets or Man Eaters. Each Ancient Cobalt piece has a listed 1/300 (0.33%) chance to drop, according to the Official Terraria Wiki.
Convert Jungle armor with Shimmer
If you already have Jungle armor, Shimmer converts each piece to its matching Ancient Cobalt piece and back again. This conversion is listed for the current main Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions by the Official Terraria Wiki.

Which route should you choose?
- Already have the matching regular set? Shimmer is the direct route: convert Shadow armor for Ancient Shadow, or Jungle armor for Ancient Cobalt.
- Do not have the matching set? Farm the relevant enemies. Ancient Shadow comes from Eaters of Souls in the Corruption; Ancient Cobalt comes from Hornets or Man Eaters.
- Want the older look? The ancient pieces provide the alternate appearance. They match their corresponding Shadow or Jungle armor pieces in function, and matching pieces are interchangeable while retaining the set bonus.
The conversion instructions above apply to the current main Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions. Old-gen console and Nintendo 3DS releases are legacy versions with differences, so check the relevant legacy-specific information rather than assuming these instructions apply.
