Choose Charmander and continue until it has joined your party.

Open Charmander’s summary and check for its alternate color and shiny marker. The starter selection screen itself does not confirm whether it is shiny; the starter guide and FireRed/LeafGreen shiny guide describe checking after selection.

How rare is a shiny starter?
Game8’s March 2026 FireRed/LeafGreen shiny guide reports the Generation III shiny rate as 1 in 8,192 per attempt. That is a chance for each Charmander selection, not a threshold: attempts do not accumulate toward a guaranteed result, and a shiny may appear sooner or much later.

Charmander is offered in Oak’s lab at the beginning of the game; the cited FireRed guide says it cannot be caught as a wild Pokémon in FireRed. If you already chose Bulbasaur or Squirtle, that guide identifies trading or replaying as ways to obtain Charmander. For this starter hunt, the repeatable method is to reload a save made before selecting your starter.

The reset-and-reload method is the same in principle, but the button combination or menu path depends on the release and device you are using. Check the reset instructions for your specific version before beginning; the guides cited here do not establish one control sequence that applies across original GBA hardware and later platform releases.
