Choose the mission folder that matches your map—dayzOffline.chernarusplus for Chernarus, dayzOffline.enoch for Livonia, or dayzOffline.sakhal for Sakhal/Frostline—then download the complete folder or only the XML file you need. Back up the live mission folder before uploading anything, compare files if the server contains mods or custom loot, restart the server, and inspect the startup/RPT logs for parsing warnings.

What the “default XML files” actually are
DayZ’s server-side Central Economy is configured inside the active mission folder. These XML files define ordinary loot, dynamic events, global economy limits, player spawn points, attachments, cargo, and scheduled messages. They are not normally restored by changing a client-side game setting; they must be copied into the mission directory used by the server.

A vanilla file is a clean file from Bohemia Interactive’s DayZ-Central-Economy repository for the same map and game configuration. “Default” does not necessarily mean that every map has an identical set of files. The Sakhal mission folder, for example, currently does not include its own messages.xml in the repository guidance, so do not create or copy files simply because they exist in another map folder.
Choose the correct vanilla mission folder
| Server map | Repository directory | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Chernarus | dayzOffline.chernarusplus |
The standard Chernarus mission |
| Livonia | dayzOffline.enoch |
The Livonia mission |
| Sakhal/Frostline | dayzOffline.sakhal |
The Sakhal mission |
Confirm the map in the server’s mission-start setting before downloading. A Chernarus XML copied into a Livonia or Sakhal mission can reference different event positions, usage categories, or map-specific assumptions. If you run several map instances, treat each instance as a separate restoration job and keep a separate backup for each one.

Know which XML controls the problem
Replacing one targeted file is usually safer than replacing the entire mission folder. Use this reference to identify the smallest useful repair:
| File | What it controls | Typical reason to restore it |
|---|---|---|
db/types.xml |
Ordinary item and loot definitions, including nominal counts, lifetimes, categories, usage areas, and tier values | Loot is missing, excessive, or has invalid item definitions |
db/globals.xml |
Global Central Economy limits, timers, and population-related settings | Economy-wide limits or timing values were edited incorrectly |
db/events.xml |
Dynamic event definitions such as helicopter crashes, vehicles, animals, and other events | An event no longer starts or has malformed settings |
db/economy.xml |
Central Economy subsystem switches | An economy subsystem was disabled or changed unintentionally |
cfgspawnabletypes.xml |
Attachments, cargo, and spawn-damage rules for entities that appear with contents or attachments | Weapons, vehicles, or containers spawn without expected contents |
cfgrandompresets.xml |
Reusable cargo and attachment pools | A preset was removed or contains invalid entries |
cfgeconomycore.xml |
Economy root classes, defaults, logging settings, and custom economy-file registration | Custom economy files no longer load or economy logging needs to be restored |
cfglimitsdefinition.xml |
Valid category, usage, value, and tag names consumed by types.xml |
A types file uses an invalid label or category |
cfgeventspawns.xml |
Exact world coordinates used by event definitions | Events have invalid or missing spawn positions |
cfgplayerspawnpoints.xml |
Fresh-player spawn locations and constraints | New characters spawn in the wrong places or have unusable spawn points |
messages.xml |
Scheduled in-game messages, including restart warnings | Server notices are malformed or no longer appear |
The db/ directory normally contains the database-related economy files, while files such as cfgeconomycore.xml, cfgeventgroups.xml, cfgeventspawns.xml, and other configuration files sit at the mission-folder root. Preserve that hierarchy when downloading and uploading. Moving types.xml out of db/, for example, does not restore it; it makes the server unable to find the expected path.
Back up the live mission before changing anything
Do this while the server is stopped, if your host allows it. A backup is essential because a vanilla file can remove deliberate changes made for a mod, custom loot table, event, or gameplay rule.
- Stop the DayZ server and wait until the control panel reports that the process has exited.
- Open the host’s web file manager or connect through FTP.
- Locate the active mission folder—the folder whose name matches the map and that contains
db/and files such ascfgeconomycore.xml. - Download the complete folder, or at minimum copy every XML file you intend to replace.
- Store the backup outside the live server directory and label it with the map and date, such as
chernarus-mission-backup-2026-10-15. - If you use mods, also save their documentation or configuration export so you can identify intentional edits later.
Do not rely on a host’s automatic backup unless you know its retention period and whether it includes mission files. Keep a local copy before every broad replacement.
Download the official vanilla files
- Open Bohemia Interactive’s official DayZ-Central-Economy GitHub repository.
- Enter the map directory that matches the running mission:
dayzOffline.chernarusplus,dayzOffline.enoch, ordayzOffline.sakhal. - For a complete baseline, download the directory as a ZIP and extract it without changing its internal folder names.
- For a focused repair, open the required file and save that file while preserving its path. For example, the ordinary loot definition is
db/types.xml, not a root-leveltypes.xml. - Compare the downloaded file with the backed-up live copy before uploading. A text comparison makes custom entries, altered nominal values, and mod registrations visible.
The repository is the authoritative vanilla source identified for this procedure. Avoid downloading “default” XML packs from random forum attachments: they can be from another game version, another map, or a modified server and may silently overwrite working settings.
Upload the files without destroying custom work
Selective replacement: the normal repair path
Use selective replacement when one system is broken or when the server has custom content. Upload only the file or small group of files that addresses the fault. Keep the original filename, capitalization, and directory path. A typical targeted repair is replacing db/types.xml while leaving db/globals.xml, custom event files, and mod registrations untouched.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Stop the server.
- Navigate to the matching mission folder in the web file manager or FTP client.
- Open the corresponding subdirectory, such as
db/, when the file belongs there. - Rename the live file rather than deleting it—for example,
types.xml.custom-backup—or rely on the separate backup you made. - Upload the vanilla file to the exact original path.
- Check that the host did not append a second extension such as
.xml.txtand that the uploaded file is readable by the server process. - Repeat only for the related files you have decided to restore.
Replacing a complete map folder
Use a full map-folder replacement when you intentionally need a complete vanilla baseline and have confirmed that custom economy files, mod settings, messages, and spawn changes can be discarded or re-applied. Keep the backup until the server has started successfully and you have verified the gameplay systems you care about.
- Stop the server and rename the existing mission folder, rather than deleting it.
- Upload the extracted matching map folder from the repository.
- Confirm that the server’s mission setting points to the newly uploaded folder name.
- Re-apply only the custom changes you still want, using the backup as a reference.
- Start the server and monitor its logs before allowing players to connect.
Restart and verify the restoration
XML replacement does not take effect in a running mission. Restart after uploading, then inspect the normal startup and RPT logs. The official cfgeconomycore.xml includes log_missionfilewarning and save_types_startup defaults; these settings provide useful context when diagnosing mission-file and economy-loading problems.

- Check that the log names the expected mission folder and map.
- Join as a test character and verify the system you repaired: loot for
types.xml, an event forevents.xml, a fresh-player location forcfgplayerspawnpoints.xml, or notices formessages.xml. - Do not judge a loot change from one building or one restart. Central Economy persistence and lifetimes mean that existing items may remain until they despawn; a clean file does not instantly repopulate every location.
- If the server fails to start, stop it, restore the backed-up file, and read the first XML-related error rather than replacing additional files blindly.
Reinstall versus replacing individual XML files
| Approach | When it fits | What it changes | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-file replacement | A specific economy, event, spawn, or message file is known to be damaged | Only the selected file | A related dependency may still contain a conflicting custom value |
| Map-folder replacement | You need a complete vanilla baseline for one map | All files in that mission folder | Custom loot, events, messages, and registrations are overwritten |
| Full server reinstall | You deliberately want a total reset and have a complete backup | Every change removed by the reinstall, not just XML settings | Unrelated server changes are wiped as well |
A vendor guide describes reinstallation as the fastest way to restore default values but warns that it wipes every other change made to the server. That trade-off makes reinstalling inappropriate for most troubleshooting. Restore the smallest scope that fixes the fault, and reserve a reinstall for a planned reset.
Common restoration scenarios
Getting the original types.xml back
Download the map-specific db/types.xml, compare it with the live copy, and upload it to the same db/ path. This returns ordinary item definitions—nominal counts, lifetimes, categories, usage areas, and tier values—to the repository version. It does not restore dynamic helicopter or vehicle events; those are defined elsewhere.
Restoring dynamic events
Restore db/events.xml for event definitions and cfgeventspawns.xml for the coordinates those events use. Replacing only one can leave a definition referring to missing or invalid positions. Check both files when an event is present in the configuration but never appears in the world.
Fixing attachments and cargo
Use cfgspawnabletypes.xml for entity attachment, cargo, and spawn-damage rules, and cfgrandompresets.xml for reusable pools. A clean types.xml cannot by itself restore a missing attachment preset.

Restoring player spawns or messages
Fresh-player locations belong to cfgplayerspawnpoints.xml. Scheduled notices and restart warnings belong to messages.xml. Because Sakhal currently lacks its own repository messages.xml, do not copy a Chernarus or Livonia messages file into Sakhal without a specific, tested reason.

When a vanilla file conflicts with mods or custom economy settings
Vanilla restoration is a baseline, not a guarantee that a modded server will remain functional. Before overwriting, identify whether the live file contains class names, event groups, custom categories, or registrations supplied by a mod. Keep those lines in a separate working copy and re-apply them deliberately after confirming the vanilla file loads.
- Restore and test one logical subsystem at a time.
- Do not merge XML by casually pasting blocks; preserve the document’s root element, nesting, and closing tags.
- Check that every category, usage, value, and tag referenced by
types.xmlis valid undercfglimitsdefinition.xml. - When a mod supplies its own economy file, inspect
cfgeconomycore.xmlbefore replacing it; its custom registration may be required for the mod to load. - Keep a changelog of each restored file, the map, and the restart result so a later update can be reversed cleanly.
Troubleshooting failed uploads and startup errors
The server cannot find the file
Verify the map folder name, directory depth, and spelling. The expected path is commonly the mission folder followed by db/ for economy database files. A file uploaded to the server root or to a similarly named inactive mission is not used.
The server stops during startup
Read the first XML error in the RPT or startup log. Check for an incomplete upload, invalid XML nesting, unsupported labels, or a file from a different map. Restore the backup if the error began immediately after replacement, then correct one file at a time.

Loot still looks unchanged
Confirm that the server restarted with the intended mission and remember that existing objects, lifetimes, and persistence can delay visible changes. Check the startup log for the loaded mission path and economy warnings before replacing additional files.
A custom event or mod stopped working
Compare the backup with the restored file. Reinstalling or replacing the complete map folder may have removed a custom event group, economy registration, or message. Re-apply only the documented custom block and test again, retaining the vanilla file as the baseline.
Final verification checklist
- The downloaded directory matches the running map.
- The live mission folder was backed up before replacement.
- Every file is in its original relative path, including
db/. - Unrelated custom files were left untouched during a selective repair.
- The server restarted after the upload.
- Startup/RPT logs show no XML parsing or mission-file warnings relevant to the restored file.
- The affected gameplay system was tested in the world.
- The backup remains available until the change is proven stable.
Frequently asked questions
Can I restore only events.xml without wiping mods?
Yes. Back up the mission, replace db/events.xml (and, when required by the error, its matching cfgeventspawns.xml), then restart and inspect the logs. A selective replacement does not inherently remove unrelated mod files.
Which XML controls ordinary loot spawns?
db/types.xml defines ordinary item and loot entries. Global timing and population limits are handled separately by db/globals.xml, so changing one file does not replace the other’s role.
Where are the vanilla files located on the server?
They are inside the active map-specific mission folder. The economy database files are under its db/ directory, while configuration files such as cfgeconomycore.xml and cfgeventspawns.xml are at the mission-folder level.
