Confirm that the resource has an fxmanifest.lua, enable OneSync with set onesync on, restart the resource, and verify the spawned entity. Use the server RPC CreateVehicle when an active player is nearby; use CreateVehicleServerSetter when the server must register a vehicle without a nearby player. Server-setter vehicles need owner-side initialization through a replicated state bag, followed by a server-side verification and retry path.
Find the script that creates the vehicle
FiveM resources are stored below the server’s resources/ directory. A resource is identified by its fxmanifest.lua, which tells FXServer which client and server scripts to load. The vehicle may be created in a Lua, JavaScript, or C# server script, or in a shared script that runs in both contexts.

Search for the creation call
Open the resource that owns the vehicle and search for one of these natives or for a model hash:
CreateVehicleCreateVehicleServerSetter- A model literal such as
`police`or a string such as"police" - A variable named
model, vehicleModel, car, or similar that is passed into a creation function
Do not edit a client-only spawn command if the vehicle is actually created by a server resource. Changing the wrong resource can appear to work locally while leaving the authoritative server vehicle unchanged.

Change the model input
Replace the existing model name with the model you want to spawn. For example, a Lua server script might contain:
local model = `police`
local vehicle = CreateVehicle(model, x, y, z, heading, true, true)
Changing `police` to another valid vehicle model changes the vehicle created by that call. If the script receives the model from configuration, change the configuration value instead of hard-coding a second value in the script. Keep the coordinates, heading, network flags, and ownership logic unchanged until the replacement has been verified.
Check the resource manifest and startup order
The resource must have an fxmanifest.lua and must declare every script it needs. A minimal Lua resource could look like this:
fx_version 'cerulean'
game 'gta5'
server_script 'server.lua'
client_script 'client.lua'
The exact manifest can contain additional dependencies and data files. The important checks are that the edited server file is declared as a server_script, the owner-side initialization file is declared as a client_script, and any dependency that supplies the model starts before this resource.
Start the custom vehicle resource first
If the replacement is a streamed custom vehicle, its resource must be started before the resource that calls the spawn native. Use the server console or server.cfg to start resources in a dependable order. A model name that is not loaded on the client can produce an invalid model, a failed spawn, or a vehicle that appears incorrectly.
Restart after editing
Restart the owning resource after changing the model. For example, from the FXServer console:

restart your_vehicle_resource
Replace your_vehicle_resource with the actual resource name. A full server restart is not normally required for a script-only model change, but it can help confirm startup order and dependency changes.
Enable OneSync before relying on server-side entities
OneSync provides the server-side entity awareness needed to create and manage peds, vehicles, and objects on the server. Add this setting to server.cfg:
set onesync on
Restart FXServer after changing the setting, then check the startup output for confirmation that the intended networking mode is active. If OneSync is not enabled, server-side creation and state management may not behave as the resource expects.
Also confirm that the server build and game build used by the resource support the natives it calls. A resource can have correct Lua syntax and still fail when the running build does not provide the required server functionality.

The main design choice is whether a suitable player is nearby when the server creates the vehicle.
| Creation path | Nearby player needed | Server registration | Initialization model | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Server RPC CreateVehicle |
Usually yes | Can fail when no player is nearby or ownership changes | Apply server RPC setters after a client owns the entity | Vehicles created near active players |
CreateVehicleServerSetter |
No | Registered immediately; initially orphaned | Trigger owner-side setup with a replicated state bag | Persistent or out-of-scope server entities |
Client-side CreateVehicle |
Client scope | Client-authored unless separately controlled | Client script performs setup | Local effects or non-authoritative spawns |
When ordinary server CreateVehicle is appropriate
A server RPC vehicle creation call can work well when the spawn point is near an active player who can become the network owner. It is simple for patrol cars, event vehicles, or other entities created directly beside a player. It is less reliable for a vehicle that must exist while everyone is far away, because the server may not have a suitable nearby client to create or simulate it.

When to use CreateVehicleServerSetter
Use the server setter when the server must register the vehicle even though no player is currently nearby. The resulting entity starts as an orphaned server-created entity. It is registered by the server but is not simulated until a suitable client enters scope and becomes its owner. That behavior is useful for persistent garages, scheduled traffic, mission vehicles, or objects placed in an empty area.
Why client-side creation is different
A client-side CreateVehicle is authored by that client. It can be suitable for purely local effects, but it does not provide the same server authority as a server-created entity. Do not switch to a client spawn merely to avoid a server RPC failure if the vehicle’s lifecycle, persistence, or permissions must remain server-controlled.

Implement a server-setter replacement
The following pattern creates a vehicle with the replacement model and asks the eventual owner to initialize it:
-- server.lua
local model = `police`
local vehicle = CreateVehicleServerSetter(model, 'automobile', x, y, z, heading)
if vehicle == 0 then
print('vehicle creation failed')
return
end
Entity(vehicle).state:set('initVehicle', true, true)
Replace `police` with the valid model you need, and replace the coordinate variables with the spawn location used by your resource. The 'automobile' argument must match the vehicle type expected by the native and the model. Keep your framework’s ownership, locking, fuel, key, and cleanup code alongside this call rather than assuming the short example supplies those systems.
Declare the client-side initialization handler
The server setter can create the entity before any client owns it. A state bag gives the owning client a replicated signal to perform native calls that require local ownership:
-- client.lua
AddStateBagChangeHandler('initVehicle', nil, function(bagName, key, value)
if not value then return end
local entity = GetEntityFromStateBagName(bagName)
if entity == 0 then return end
if NetworkGetEntityOwner(entity) ~= PlayerId() then return end
SetVehicleOnGroundProperly(entity)
Entity(entity).state:set('initVehicle', nil, true)
end)
State bags replicate key/value changes between the server and clients. Normally, the server or the entity owner can write entity state. The handler first resolves the entity, then checks that the local client owns it, applies setup, and clears the marker so the same work is not repeated indefinitely.

Add the vehicle properties your resource needs
SetVehicleOnGroundProperly is only an example of owner-side setup. Your handler may also need to apply colors, liveries, extras, doors, fuel, plate text, or other framework-specific properties. Apply those changes only after the ownership check. If a property is required for server logic, record and verify it from the server rather than treating a client call as proof that the state was accepted.
Handle ownership races and verify the result
Ownership can change during initialization. Cfx.re documents a race in which the state-bag handler runs, but ownership changes before vehicle appearance data reaches the server. A handler that returns successfully is therefore not enough evidence that the durable vehicle state was applied.
Use a durable property as the test
Choose a property your server can read back, such as vehicle colors, and compare it with the intended configuration after initialization. The server should wait for the expected value for a bounded period. If the value never arrives, treat initialization as failed rather than leaving a partially configured vehicle in the world.

Retry by recreating when necessary
The documented recovery is to recreate the vehicle when verification fails after the timeout. Remove or clean up the failed entity according to your resource’s lifecycle rules, create a replacement, set the initialization marker again, and run the same verification. Add a retry limit or an administrative error path so a persistent model or networking problem does not create an endless spawn loop.
An ownership-aware production loop should therefore:
- Create the vehicle with the selected native.
- Set the replicated initialization marker.
- Wait for a client to take ownership and run the handler.
- Read back the required property on the server.
- Accept the entity only when the property matches.
- Recreate it, or report an error, when the check times out.
Keep server-created vehicles alive deliberately
Orphan mode
SetEntityOrphanMode(vehicle, 2) can keep a server-created entity from being removed by the server. This does not make the vehicle indestructible or immune to client requests: a client can still request deletion. Use orphan mode only when the vehicle’s intended lifecycle requires it, and pair it with explicit cleanup for abandoned missions, expired events, or shutdown conditions.

Routing-bucket lockdown
Routing buckets can isolate entities and players. Bucket lockdown can prevent client-created entities in a bucket; strict mode gives the server stronger creation authority. This is useful when a mission or interior must not accept arbitrary client spawns, but it changes what clients are allowed to create. Configure the bucket mode as part of the resource’s authority design rather than enabling it without checking framework compatibility.
Stream a custom vehicle correctly
Changing the model string is sufficient only when the model is already available to clients. Custom vehicles require valid client files and the appropriate manifest data-file declarations. Vehicle-related data types include CARCOLS_FILE; other metadata entries may be required by the particular asset.
A typical manifest data declaration has this form, with the actual file supplied by the vehicle resource:
files {
'data/vehicles.meta',
'data/carcols.meta'
}
data_file 'VEHICLE_METADATA_FILE' 'data/vehicles.meta'
data_file 'CARCOLS_FILE' 'data/carcols.meta'
Use the data-file type required by the asset’s metadata and keep the paths exactly aligned with the files in the resource. Start the custom vehicle resource before the server script that creates it. If the server log shows a successful creation but clients see an invisible, default, or invalid vehicle, check the model name, streamed files, manifest declarations, and resource startup order before changing networking code.
Step-by-step replacement checklist
- Identify the resource under
resources/that owns the vehicle creation call. - Open its
fxmanifest.luaand confirm the relevant server script is declared. - Search the scripts for
CreateVehicle,CreateVehicleServerSetter, or the current model name. - Replace the model input with a valid built-in or streamed custom model.
- If the vehicle is custom, verify its client files and manifest data-file entries, including any required
CARCOLS_FILE. - Confirm
set onesync onis present inserver.cfg. - Use server RPC
CreateVehicleonly when an appropriate nearby player is expected. - Use
CreateVehicleServerSetterwhen the server must register the vehicle without nearby players. - For a server setter, set a replicated initialization state bag and handle it in a client script after ownership is confirmed.
- Verify a durable property on the server and recreate the entity if initialization times out or the value is wrong.
- Restart the resource and inspect the server and client consoles for model, manifest, ownership, or native errors.
Troubleshoot a vehicle that disappears or fails
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The old vehicle still spawns | The wrong resource or configuration value was edited, or the resource was not restarted | Search all resources for the old model and restart the resource that owns the creation call |
| The server call returns no usable vehicle | No suitable nearby player is available for server RPC creation | Switch to CreateVehicleServerSetter for an out-of-scope spawn |
| The setter vehicle exists but does not move or initialize | It is orphaned until a client enters scope and takes ownership | Wait for scope, run the state-bag handler, and check ownership before local setters |
| Appearance changes sometimes vanish | Ownership changed during the state-bag initialization race | Verify a durable property on the server and recreate after a bounded timeout |
| The model is invisible or wrong | Invalid model name, missing streamed files, or incomplete manifest data declarations | Validate the model and custom resource, then check manifest paths and data-file types |
| The script never runs | The file is absent from fxmanifest.lua or the resource failed to start |
Declare the server/client scripts and inspect startup errors |
| The entity is removed unexpectedly | Normal orphan cleanup or a client deletion request | Review lifecycle code, use orphan mode only when appropriate, and control client authority |
| Clients can create unwanted entities in an isolated area | Routing-bucket lockdown is not enabled or is using the wrong mode | Configure bucket lockdown, using strict mode when stronger server creation authority is required |
Design the replacement around authority and lifecycle
The model swap is the smallest part of a reliable replacement. Decide where the vehicle is authoritative, when it should exist, who may delete it, and what happens if no player enters its scope. A nearby patrol vehicle may need only a server RPC and ordinary cleanup. A persistent vehicle needs a server setter, owner-side initialization, verification, and a deliberate orphan or persistence policy.
Keep the model value in configuration when administrators may change it, but validate that value before calling the native. Treat a return value of 0 as a creation failure. Do not mark a mission vehicle ready until its required state has been confirmed by the server. This prevents downstream scripts from handing out keys, assigning occupants, or saving an entity that never completed initialization.
What a successful replacement looks like
After the resource restart, the new model should be created by the intended resource, clients should stream the correct asset, and the server should retain the expected entity state. For a server-setter vehicle, it is normal for the entity to wait as an orphan until a client enters scope. Once ownership is assigned, the state-bag handler should apply local setup, clear its marker, and allow the server’s verification check to accept the vehicle. If that check fails, the resource should recover by recreating the entity instead of silently continuing with an incomplete vehicle.
