To improve your character’s accuracy in GTA 5, raise the Shooting stat by hitting targets—especially with headshots—and practice in the Shooting Range. A higher Shooting stat reduces recoil and makes the character more accurate with any gun. Then adjust aim assistance and sensitivity to suit your controls; there is no documented setting that is best for everyone.
Raise the Shooting stat
The GTA V manual says that hitting targets increases the Shooting stat, with headshots helping particularly. It also explains that a higher stat reduces recoil and improves accuracy with any gun. The manual recommends the Shooting Range and its challenges as a fast way to build the skill. Read the GTA V manual hosted by Xbox.

Practice at the Shooting Range
Use the range to focus on acquiring targets and landing accurate shots. Aim for headshots as you practice: the manual identifies them as a way to increase Shooting. It does not prescribe a session length, a particular routine, or a percentage improvement, so treat progress as something to build through practice rather than a guaranteed quick result.

Choose an aim mode that fits your control style
Rockstar documents four targeting modes, ranging from substantial lock-on assistance to fully manual aiming. If targets are difficult to acquire, try an assisted mode; if you want to control every movement yourself, try Free Aim. These are practical starting points based on how the modes work, not a promise that one will improve every player’s accuracy. Rockstar’s guide to aiming and weapon modifications describes them as follows:
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
| Mode | How aiming assistance works | Good starting point if you… |
|---|---|---|
| Assisted Aim – Full | Wide lock angle, with the ability to switch between targets. | Want the most lock-on assistance. |
| Assisted Aim – Partial | Medium lock angle; the reticle slows over a target. | Want assistance but prefer more control than Full provides. |
| Free Aim – Assisted | Narrower snap-lock assistance. | Want mostly manual aiming with some help acquiring a target. |
| Free Aim | No lock-on assistance. | Want to aim manually without lock-on. |
These descriptions explain the assistance available; they do not establish which mode produces the best accuracy for a particular player.
Adjust sensitivity gradually
Rockstar says aiming and look sensitivity can be customized for both first- and third-person views. Change sensitivity in small increments, then practice in the perspective you normally use. If the reticle overshoots targets, try a lower setting; if it feels sluggish to move, try a higher one. Those are practical adjustment tips, not official numeric recommendations: Rockstar does not prescribe a universal sensitivity value.

Find the settings—and change GTA Online aim preferences
Use the pause menu’s Settings tab to find controls, camera, and related options. Exact menu details and controls can vary by platform and edition, so follow the labels shown in your game. Rockstar Support’s settings-menu instructions provide further guidance.
GTA Online imports aim settings from Story Mode by default. To change them, leave Online and adjust the settings in Story Mode before starting another session. Rockstar also says the lobby creator’s selected aim settings become the default for other players in that lobby. Rockstar Support explains how to access settings and how aim settings work in GTA Online.
