Find Brittle Quartzite Shards to craft Brittle Whetstones for weapons, and Brittle Marble Shards to craft Brittle Plating for armor. At a Workbench, the listed recipe for either material uses three of its matching shards. Shard locations and recipes may vary with game updates, so check the crafting screen in your current save.
Which shards make each upgrade material?

Where to look for Brittle Quartzite and Brittle Marble
Look for breakable deposits of Brittle Quartzite and Brittle Marble, then collect the corresponding shards. The resource database describes Brittle Quartzite Shards as a Tier 1 upgrade mineral found in breakable deposits and hidden park spaces; Brittle Marble Shards come from Brittle Marble.
A July 29, 2025 PC Gamer guide reports finding shards in these areas. They are search suggestions, not guaranteed spawn points:
- The large tree in the centre of the Entrance area.
- The ground around the Picnic Table and the Toxic Anthill beneath it.
- The western border of the Ice Cream Truck region, near that area’s Ranger Outpost.
- Flower beds and gardens around the Statue.
Craft the materials at a Workbench
- Collect at least three Brittle Quartzite Shards for a Brittle Whetstone, or three Brittle Marble Shards for Brittle Plating.
- Go to a Workbench and open the relevant upgrade-material recipe.
- Craft the material, then use Brittle Whetstones for weapons or Brittle Plating for armor.
The resource database lists the recipes as Shard Recipes, while the PC Gamer guide confirms the shard-to-material route at a Workbench. If the recipe is missing or its ingredients differ, use the crafting interface in your save as the authority: the reviewed sources do not establish a verified current game build.

What about alternate bug-part recipes?
Community-wiki pages describe alternate recipes using bug parts and Smithing unlocks. The Brittle Plating page says its bug-part recipe requires an additional Smithing unlock; the Brittle Whetstone page associates a renewable bug-part route with Advanced Smithing: Brittle Upgrades. These details have not been independently confirmed against an official current-build source, so check your unlocks and recipe screen before farming for those ingredients.
