The fastest dependable way to get large amounts of coal or iron in 7 Days to Die is to locate the matching surface ore node, mark it on your map, and dig beneath it. The exposed node is usually a sign of a larger underground pocket. Mine hard blocks with an iron pickaxe, then upgrade to a steel pickaxe or auger when available. For a small early coal supply, chop burnt trees and wood debris in the Burnt Forest or Wasteland; for iron without a mining trip, scrap iron items, loot containers, or smelt iron inputs in a Forge.

What coal and iron are used for

Coal and iron are both basic progression materials, but they enter your crafting loop in different ways.

Coal

Mining a coal-ore block places coal in your inventory. Coal is used in gunpowder and wheel recipes and can be burned as fuel. Wood is generally the preferable renewable fuel, so coal is usually more valuable as a crafting ingredient than as something to burn. Coal can also come from chopping burnt trees and wooden debris in the Burnt Forest and Wasteland, with occasional pieces appearing in containers or on zombies.

Iron

Iron is obtained by mining iron ore and other iron-based blocks, scrapping iron items, or finding it in loot. A Forge can smelt iron or iron items into Forge Iron, the form used by forge crafting. That means a damaged or unwanted iron object can still become useful metal even when you are not ready for a dedicated mine.

The fastest reliable mining route

  1. Scan for an exposed node. Travel across the terrain and look for a protruding coal or iron outcrop. Coal nodes are typically dark; iron nodes look like distinct metallic ore outcrops. A visible node is a starting marker, not the whole deposit.
  2. Mark the location immediately. Place a map marker before breaking the surface. You may need several trips, and a mined-out location is still useful as a reference for the tunnel you built.
  3. Open a controlled shaft. Start at the node and dig downward, then follow the ore outward as the pocket expands. Keep an entrance you can find again and leave enough room to move, place light and carry materials.
  4. Use the best hard-block tool you own. A stone axe can serve as an emergency early-game tool, but an iron pickaxe is substantially more practical for sustained ore work. A steel pickaxe or auger is the next efficiency step when your progression allows it.
  5. Harvest the pocket methodically. Mine connected ore first, then check the surrounding blocks rather than abandoning the tunnel after the first visible vein. Underground ore can exist without a visible surface node, so an established mine can sometimes be extended into nearby material.
  6. Return with a full load safely. Carry food, water, a light source and repair materials. Reinforce the shaft or tunnel as it grows; underground pockets can create structural-integrity hazards, and a large unsupported opening can be more dangerous than the ore is worth.

The node-following method wins for bulk resources because it combines a visual search with a concentrated underground deposit. Searching containers or scrapping equipment is faster only when you need a small amount and already have those items available.

How to find coal

Mine coal ore

When you see a coal surface node, mark it and dig directly beneath it. Coal ore remains in the terrain until you harvest it with a pickaxe; the mined block then becomes coal in your inventory. Continue downward and outward rather than stopping at the exposed piece, because the visible node commonly points to a larger pocket.

Harvest burnt vegetation for a small early supply

If you only need enough coal for an immediate recipe, travel through the Burnt Forest or Wasteland and chop burnt trees and wooden debris. This avoids the time and structural risk of opening a mine. It is a convenience route for modest quantities, not a replacement for a dedicated deposit when you need sustained gunpowder or wheel production.

Check incidental sources

Coal can occasionally appear in loot containers or on zombies. Check ovens and other containers while exploring, but treat these finds as supplementary: their quantity and appearance are not as predictable as harvesting a node or burnt wood.

What happens to a coal node afterward?

The Coal reference reports that surface nodes can regenerate at random locations in Navezgane after harvesting. Do not expect the same marker to refill in place; keep exploring if you need another exposed source.

How to find iron

Follow an iron outcrop underground

Iron outcrops provide the clearest route to a concentrated supply. Mark the outcrop, dig below it and trace the connected ore. Iron can also occur underground without a visible node, so an existing tunnel may reveal additional ore even when the surface gave no clue.

Understand the reported block yield

The Iron Ore reference reports approximately 1–50 iron from mining an iron-ore block, plus another 30–50 when the block is completely destroyed. Those are page-specific estimates, not a universal guarantee; the actual result can vary with the game version and the exact block or harvesting conditions.

Use scrap and loot when mining is inconvenient

Scrap iron-based items in your inventory when you need metal without leaving a defended base. Containers and zombies can also provide iron. These routes are useful between expeditions, although they usually produce scattered amounts rather than the concentrated yield of an ore pocket.

Convert inputs in a Forge

Place iron ore, iron-based items or other accepted iron inputs in a Forge to produce Forge Iron. Forge Iron is the material consumed by forge recipes, so mining and scavenging remain useful even when the item you found is not directly usable in a crafting recipe.

Tool progression: what to use at each stage

Tool Best use Trade-off
Stone axe Emergency early mining or a temporary stopgap Slow and inefficient for prolonged hard-block excavation
Iron pickaxe Primary tool for a first serious coal or iron shaft Requires iron and normal repair planning, but is a major improvement over improvised tools
Steel pickaxe Faster hard-block mining once steel progression is unlocked Higher progression and material requirements
Auger High-speed excavation for large projects and deep deposits Best reserved for players who can support its progression and ongoing resource demands

Upgrade when the time saved exceeds the cost of making and repairing the tool. For a short emergency tunnel, a stone axe may be adequate; for a mine intended to supply repeated crafting, start with an iron pickaxe whenever possible.

Choosing between mining, scavenging and scrapping

Approach Speed for a small need Bulk yield Tool cost Risk Best situation
Follow a surface node Fast if a node is nearby High: the node can lead to an underground pocket Pickaxe recommended; stone axe only as a stopgap Requires a supported underground opening Building a repeatable coal or iron supply
Search for underground ore without a node Slower because you must prospect Potentially high, but location is uncertain Pickaxe or better Same tunnel and collapse hazards Extending a productive mine or exploring new ground
Burnt Forest/Wasteland wood Very convenient for a little coal Limited compared with a full deposit Chopping tool Mostly travel and biome exposure rather than a deep shaft Early gunpowder, wheels or other small coal requirements
Loot containers or zombies Quick when already looting Unpredictable and usually scattered No mining tool Normal exploration or combat risk Supplementing a stockpile while questing
Scrap iron items Immediate if scrap is already stored Depends on the items you find No expedition required Low physical risk Filling a shortfall before a Forge run

How to mine without losing the shaft or your character

Support the opening as it grows

Structural integrity matters underground. Keep the initial shaft narrow, add supports or reinforcing blocks as you widen it, and avoid removing every block beneath a large unsupported ceiling at once. A pocket that looks rich can become a collapse hazard when its surrounding material is excavated too aggressively.

Keep a readable route out

Light the descent and maintain a recognizable staircase, ramp or other controlled path instead of creating a maze of dead ends. Mark branches that you have already cleared. This reduces the chance of getting lost while encumbered and makes later return trips faster.

  • Perfect DND Gift for Players & Collectors The bold silver and red enamel combination is ideal for barbarians, fighters, or rogues – a great D&D gift for dice goblins, DND lovers, and TTRPG players

Pack for a complete trip

  • Food and water for the time spent underground.
  • A light source so ore, support gaps and the exit remain visible.
  • Repair materials for the mining tool.
  • Enough inventory space to avoid discarding ore at the bottom of the shaft.
  • Support materials for reinforcing a tunnel or recovering from an unsafe opening.

Leave before the mine becomes a trap

Do not keep digging solely because ore remains visible. If your tool is nearly broken, your inventory is full or the route is no longer supported, return to the surface, unload and repair. A marked mine can be revisited; a rushed excavation can cost all of the material you collected.

Troubleshooting common problems

“I cannot find a surface node.”

Search broad ground rather than circling one small area. Surface nodes are the most dependable visual starting point, but underground ore can exist without any exposed marker. If you already have a safe tunnel near your base, inspect its surrounding blocks before abandoning it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The node disappeared immediately.”

The exposed piece is only the marker. Continue digging below and around the original location. Breaking the visible block does not mean the underground pocket is exhausted.

“Mining is taking too long.”

Check the tool before changing locations. Move from a stone axe to an iron pickaxe, then to a steel pickaxe or auger as your progression permits. Repairing a damaged tool and clearing a focused pocket is usually more productive than repeatedly starting shallow holes.

“I need coal right now, not a mine.”

Use burnt trees and wood debris in the Burnt Forest or Wasteland, then check ovens, containers and zombies during normal looting. Reserve a dedicated node mine for larger or recurring coal requirements.

“I need iron but cannot travel.”

Scrap iron items in storage, search nearby containers and smelt accepted iron inputs in your Forge. These methods bridge a shortfall while you prepare a safer mining expedition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The tunnel collapsed or feels unsafe.”

Stop excavation, retreat along the marked route and reinforce the opening before removing more blocks. Structural-integrity hazards are a core reason to support underground pockets instead of hollowing out a large room all at once.

A practical first-week plan

There is no universal amount of coal or iron that every survivor needs by day 7. The correct target changes with recipes, world settings and your chosen progression. Use the following as a flexible order of operations rather than a quota.

  1. Early days: Keep a stone axe available, gather incidental coal from burnt vegetation if you are in the right biome, and save iron items that can be scrapped or smelted.
  2. Before a major crafting push: Make or obtain an iron pickaxe, carry supplies and locate a node close enough for repeated trips.
  3. After marking the node: Build a supported shaft, mine the connected pocket and return to unload before the tool or supplies become critical.
  4. As steel or auger progression arrives: Reopen the same marked mine with the faster tool, or prospect for another node if the first pocket is exhausted.

This sequence separates emergency material gathering from long-term production. It also keeps your day-7 plan realistic: mine only what your recipes and settings require, then expand the operation when a later project justifies the risk and tool cost.

Version and yield caveats

The cited Official 7 Days to Die Wiki pages do not expose one game-version number for every mining mechanic. Ore yields, recipes, biome behavior and tool efficiency can change between builds, so verify precise values against the build you are playing. The approximate iron figures above belong to the Iron Ore page and should not be treated as a guaranteed per-block payout in every version or world.
