You get coral in Minecraft by finding it in a warm-ocean coral reef and mining it with a Silk Touch–enchanted tool. Dye is not part of the documented method: it does not create coral or change its natural type. Keep collected coral in contact with water to prevent it from turning into dead coral.
Where to find coral
Look for a coral reef in a warm-ocean biome. Coral occurs naturally there in five types: tube, fire, horn, bubble, and brain. You can also find fan-shaped coral variants. Minecraft’s coral guide describes these reef formations and varieties.
How to collect coral
- Find a warm-ocean coral reef. Search the reef for the coral block, plant, or fan you want to collect.
- Use a Silk Touch–enchanted tool. Mine the coral with that tool to collect it. Minecraft’s guide says coral mines instantly with Silk Touch.
- Keep it in water. Coral needs water to remain alive; outside water, it turns into dead coral.
Does dye make or change coral?
No. Dye is not part of the documented way to obtain coral, and the cited Minecraft guide does not describe dye as a way to create coral or change its natural type. Find the coral in a reef and collect it with Silk Touch instead.
What happens if you mine coral without Silk Touch?
Do not rely on a tool without Silk Touch to collect coral. A Mojang issue record for Minecraft 1.13-pre10 says coral fans mined without Silk Touch drop nothing and marks that behavior “Works As Intended.” That is historical evidence for that pre-release version, not a guarantee covering every current edition or version.
