You cannot make DLSS 4.5 work in literally every unsupported game. NVIDIA’s official overrides can update or expose DLSS features in compatible games that already contain the required DLSS, Frame Generation, or NVAPI integration. They cannot reliably inject a complete DLSS implementation into a game with no DLSS support.
The practical solution is to identify which kind of “unsupported” game you have, then use the appropriate option: an NVIDIA App DLSS override, NVIDIA Smooth Motion, a native alternative upscaler, or—only with appropriate caution—a title-specific community mod.

The three meanings of “unsupported”
Before changing any settings, determine which category your game belongs to. This distinction is more important than the words “DLSS 4.5” in the game’s title or marketing.

- It supports DLSS but not the newest model. This is the best case. The game already calls DLSS Super Resolution or Frame Generation, but its shipped model or integration predates DLSS 4.5. The NVIDIA App may be able to override the model or mode.
- It is not on NVIDIA’s override list. The game may contain DLSS support but not appear as a compatible title in the NVIDIA App. Absence from the list does not prove that an override is technically impossible, but NVIDIA does not guarantee an official override for it.
- It has no DLSS integration. If the game has no DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, or Frame Generation option and lacks the required engine integration, the official NVIDIA App cannot normally turn it into a DLSS game.
NVIDIA’s current RTX games and applications list identifies supported titles and, where applicable, marks available override capabilities.

What DLSS 4.5 feature are you trying to use?
DLSS 4.5 is a collection of technologies rather than one universal switch:
- DLSS Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower internal resolution.
- DLAA applies DLSS-style anti-aliasing at native resolution. It generally improves image quality rather than increasing performance.
- The Transformer/model override changes the AI model used by an existing DLSS implementation.
- DLSS Frame Generation creates one additional frame and requires an existing Frame Generation integration.
- DLSS Multi Frame Generation creates multiple AI-generated frames and requires an RTX 50 GPU.
- Dynamic Multi Frame Generation varies the frame multiplier to target a display refresh rate or custom target. NVIDIA’s current documentation limits it to RTX 50 hardware.
- NVIDIA Smooth Motion is a separate driver-level frame-generation technology. It is not DLSS 4.5 and does not add DLSS upscaling.
DLSS Super Resolution needs game-engine data such as motion vectors, depth information, render targets, and appropriate integration points. Frame Generation requires additional presentation and frame-pacing information. These are application integrations, not merely interchangeable DLL files. See NVIDIA’s DLSS integration guide and Frame Generation integration guide.
DLSS feature support by GPU
| GPU | Super Resolution/DLAA | Frame Generation | Multi Frame Generation | Dynamic MFG |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RTX 20 | Yes | No | No | No |
| RTX 30 | Yes | No | No | No |
| RTX 40 | Yes | Yes | No | No, under NVIDIA’s current table |
| RTX 50 | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
This is a feature-specific matrix, not a claim that every DLSS 4.5 component is limited to RTX 50. NVIDIA lists Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA across RTX generations; Frame Generation on RTX 40 and RTX 50; and Multi Frame Generation only on RTX 50. Check the current NVIDIA hardware table for changes.

How to use the official NVIDIA App override
Prerequisites
- A GeForce RTX GPU.
- The current NVIDIA App.
- A current GeForce Game Ready or Studio driver.
- A game with an existing DLSS or Frame Generation implementation that is recognized as compatible.
- The relevant feature enabled in the game before expecting the override to activate.
Menu names can change as NVIDIA updates the app, but the current path is:
NVIDIA App → Graphics → Program Settings → select the game → Driver Settings
You can also use NVIDIA App → Graphics → Global Settings. Start with Program Settings. A per-game profile is safer because Global Settings affect every compatible game and newly detected compatible title.
1. Update the app and driver
Open the NVIDIA App and install available updates. Do not treat a historical driver number as a permanent universal requirement. NVIDIA’s support instructions for the fixed DLSS 4.5 6X Multi Frame Generation beta required NVIDIA App beta enrollment and Game Ready Driver 595.97 WHQL or newer at that time. The March 31, 2026 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation rollout listed Game Ready Driver 595.79 WHQL or newer as its launch requirement. Your current app and driver may require something different.

2. Enable the game’s native DLSS option first
Launch the game, open its graphics or display settings, and enable DLSS Super Resolution or Frame Generation if the game provides it. Then close the game completely. An override generally modifies an existing implementation; it is not a substitute for enabling that implementation.
3. Apply a Super Resolution or model override
- Open NVIDIA App → Graphics → Program Settings.
- Select the game’s executable or profile.
- Open Driver Settings and find the DLSS override section.
- Choose DLSS Override – Model Presets, or the equivalent Super Resolution/model setting shown in your build.
- Select Recommended or another available preset.
- Relaunch the game.
NVIDIA’s Recommended setting maps available presets to different DLSS modes. That mapping can change, so do not assume that a letter such as K, L, or M permanently corresponds to one specific visual mode.
In compatible games, the override may also expose DLAA or Ultra Performance when the game already has Super Resolution enabled but does not natively offer those modes. This still does not create DLSS in a game with no DLSS integration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Apply a Frame Generation override
For a game with native Frame Generation:
- Enable DLSS Frame Generation in the game.
- Open NVIDIA App → Graphics → Program Settings.
- Find DLSS Override – Frame Generation Mode.
- Choose the available override and relaunch the game.
On an RTX 50 system with a compatible title, the current Dynamic Multi Frame Generation path is:
- Open the NVIDIA App’s Graphics tab.
- Select the game globally or under Program Settings.
- Open DLSS Override – Frame Generation Mode.
- Select Dynamic.
- Choose Max refresh rate or a custom target.
Dynamic mode adjusts the multiplier toward the selected display-refresh target. NVIDIA currently says Dynamic Multi Frame Generation is not compatible with frame-rate limiters or V-Sync. If that causes problems, use Fixed mode or return to the game’s normal Frame Generation setting.
With Fixed, choose the supported multiplier. Use 3D app setting preserves the game’s normal Frame Generation behavior and avoids forcing a higher multiplier. NVIDIA says 4X Multi Frame Generation is available in compatible titles, while up-to-6X operation is restricted to titles using the required newer components. See NVIDIA’s support instructions.
5. Verify that the override activated
Do not judge activation only by whether the image looks different. Use the NVIDIA overlay:

- Frame pacing remains stable.
- There is no new ghosting, flickering, HUD distortion, or camera warping.
- Input response remains acceptable.
If the game has no DLSS support
Use NVIDIA Smooth Motion first
For a genuinely non-DLSS title, NVIDIA Smooth Motion is the closest official fallback. It inserts an inferred frame between rendered frames at the driver level and can work with compatible DirectX 11, DirectX 12, and Vulkan games, including games without native DLSS.
Smooth Motion is not DLSS Super Resolution. It does not provide DLAA, reconstruct the image using DLSS, or supply missing DLSS engine integration. NVIDIA introduced it for RTX 50 and later added support for all GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs. Do not assume RTX 20 or RTX 30 support unless a current NVIDIA page explicitly confirms it.
Use Smooth Motion when the goal is smoother perceived motion, not when the goal is DLSS-style image reconstruction. It is most useful when the game already maintains a sufficiently strong base frame rate.

If available, use AMD FSR, Intel XeSS, the game engine’s temporal upscaler, NVIDIA Image Scaling, or in-game resolution scaling. These are alternatives to DLSS, not ways to install DLSS 4.5.
Consider a title-specific mod only with care
Some community projects replace DLSS-related files, bridge APIs, or add Frame Generation to particular games. There is no safe universal “copy this DLL into every game” method.
Risks include incompatible DLL names or versions, startup crashes, broken updates, visual artifacts, anti-cheat enforcement, missing motion-vector or depth data, and licensing or authenticity concerns around redistributed proprietary files. Online games are especially poor candidates for experimentation. Only consider a mod for a single-player title when its exact game version, maintenance source, security status, licensing, and anti-cheat implications have been checked. NVIDIA’s Streamline documentation explains why file replacement alone cannot provide all required application data.

The override option is missing
- Confirm the game is selected under Program Settings, not merely detected in the library.
- Update the NVIDIA App and driver.
- Launch the game once before configuring the profile.
- Enable DLSS or Frame Generation in-game where required.
- Check that the title supports the specific override you selected.
- Confirm that you are using the correct executable, launcher, binary, or compatibility mode.
Some games without NVAPI support may not expose the expected NVIDIA options. NVIDIA’s gaming documentation also describes Smooth Motion behavior and compatibility considerations.
The game launches, but DLSS 4.5 is not active
- Check Alt+Z → Statistics → Statistics View → DLSS.
- Test a per-game profile instead of Global Settings.
- Confirm the game’s own DLSS option is enabled.
- Restart the game after changing the override.
- Restore defaults, then apply only one override at a time.
The game crashes
- Open the NVIDIA App game profile and select Restore to default.
- Disable Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation in-game.
- Verify the game files through its launcher.
- Remove any third-party DLL replacement or mod.
- Restart the PC and test the native configuration.
- If the game is known to support it, reapply only the Super Resolution/model override.
Performance gets worse
On RTX 20 or RTX 30, try Model K instead of M or L. Also test a lower Frame Generation multiplier, Fixed instead of Dynamic, the native DLSS model, lower ray-tracing settings, or no Frame Generation at all. If the game is CPU-bound, generated frames may increase the displayed FPS without improving responsiveness.

Image quality or latency gets worse
Switch from Performance to Quality or Balanced, try the native model, and disable Frame Generation to determine whether the problem comes from upscaling or interpolation. Look for ghosting, HUD artifacts, camera warping, uneven pacing, and delayed input. Compare a repeatable gameplay scene rather than a static menu.
Frame Generation does not create an equivalent increase in simulation rate or reduce base render latency. A high generated-FPS counter can coexist with poor responsiveness, particularly when the underlying rendered frame rate is low.
Dynamic mode conflicts with V-Sync or a frame limiter
NVIDIA currently documents Dynamic Multi Frame Generation as incompatible with V-Sync and frame-rate limiters. Switch to Fixed mode, remove the conflicting synchronization setting for testing, or return to the game’s ordinary Frame Generation mode.

Which option should you choose?
- RTX 20/30: Use Super Resolution or DLAA in games that already support them. Test Model K first if newer models reduce performance. These GPUs do not receive Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation in NVIDIA’s current matrix.
- RTX 40: Use Super Resolution, DLAA, model upgrades, and Frame Generation where the game supports them. Smooth Motion is also available, but Multi Frame Generation is not listed for RTX 40.
- RTX 50: Use compatible Super Resolution and Frame Generation overrides, and consider Fixed or Dynamic Multi Frame Generation only when base FPS, display refresh rate, and frame pacing justify it.
- A genuinely non-DLSS game: Try Smooth Motion on a supported RTX 40 or RTX 50 GPU, then use a native alternative upscaler or resolution scaling. Treat third-party mods as title-specific experiments, not universal solutions.
Laptop GPUs require extra caution: an RTX model in a laptop may have substantially different power, thermal, and memory limits from its desktop counterpart, so results will not necessarily match.
Final compatibility checklist
- Does the game already expose DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, or Frame Generation?
- Is it listed as compatible in NVIDIA’s current title list?
- Does your GPU support the specific feature—not merely DLSS generally?
- Did you enable the in-game prerequisite before applying the override?
- Did you use Program Settings before trying Global Settings?
- Does the NVIDIA DLSS statistics overlay confirm activation?
- Is the base rendered frame rate high enough for Frame Generation?
- Are frame pacing, latency, and visual artifacts acceptable?
- Can you restore the NVIDIA App profile and remove any third-party files cleanly?
Game patches can add native DLSS 4.5 support, change DLL versions, disable an override, or break a mod. If a previously working setup stops working, check NVIDIA’s current support list and the game’s patch notes before forcing new files or settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the NVIDIA App add DLSS 4.5 to a game with no DLSS?
Generally, no. The official override updates or changes an existing compatible DLSS or Frame Generation integration; it does not inject all the engine data and API calls required by an arbitrary game.
Is NVIDIA Smooth Motion the same as DLSS 4.5?
No. Smooth Motion is a separate driver-level frame-generation technology for compatible games. It can make motion appear smoother but does not add DLSS Super Resolution or DLAA.
Recommended Free Tools
Does RTX 40 support DLSS 4.5 Multi Frame Generation?
NVIDIA’s current feature table limits Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation to RTX 50. RTX 40 supports DLSS Super Resolution and Frame Generation.
Why is the DLSS override missing in NVIDIA App?
The game may not be recognized as compatible, may not have been launched once, may be selected under the wrong executable, or may lack the required native DLSS, Frame Generation, or NVIDIA API integration.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Use the NVIDIA App to upgrade DLSS in games that already support the relevant technology. It cannot make DLSS 4.5 work in every unsupported title. For games with no DLSS, use Smooth Motion on supported RTX 40/50 hardware or choose a native alternative upscaler; reserve third-party mods for carefully verified, title-specific cases.
