To get a Dynamax Pokémon from a Max Battle, collect Max Particles, join a Power Spot battle with a party of three that includes at least one Max Pokémon, and defeat the boss. You’ll then receive battle rewards and a chance to catch it; the catch is not guaranteed.
How to get a Max Pokémon from a battle
-
Collect Max Particles
On the map, tap a Power Spot and then tap the Max Particle bubbles on its details screen. You can also collect particles while exploring, including with Adventure Sync. Your first interaction with a Power Spot may give extra particles. The Pokémon GO Help Center lists a collection limit of 800 Max Particles per day and an Item Bag capacity of 1,500; the amount required to enter a battle depends on the boss. See Niantic’s Max Particles guide.
-
Choose a Power Spot and prepare your party
Tap a Power Spot that has a Max Battle and select Battle when you have enough Max Particles. Pick three Pokémon, including at least one Max Pokémon. Only Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon can enter a Max Battle. Niantic’s Max Battles guide explains the battle requirements.
-
Defeat the Power Spot Boss
Use Fast Attacks, Charged Attacks, and dodges. Attacking fills the Max meter; when it is full, your Max Pokémon transforms for three turns. Swipe toward energy on the battlefield to fill the meter faster.

In the general Max Battle format described by Niantic, up to four Trainers can join, and the lobby begins when four have joined or the timer reaches zero. If your group fails to defeat the boss, you can try again before the Power Spot closes. Max Particles are deducted only after a successful defeat, so a failed attempt does not require another particle payment.
If all your Pokémon faint during a three-star-or-higher Max Battle, you can cheer to help fill your teammates’ Max meters, but you cannot choose new Pokémon and rejoin that battle.

Claim the rewards and try to catch the boss
After victory, collect the special items, then attempt to catch the Power Spot Boss. Possible rewards include Golden Razz Berries, Fast and Charged TMs, and Rare Candy; the exact reward bundle is not fixed. Niantic says you can spend PokéCoins to increase rewards. The catch itself is a chance, not a guarantee. As the Help Center puts it, “To catch a Max Pokémon, you will have to first defeat it in a Max Battle.” What are Max Pokémon?
What happens after you catch it
A caught Max Pokémon returns to its regular appearance in storage. It can Dynamax or Gigantamax again in eligible situations by using Max Particles. After a victory, you may also place one Pokémon from your battle party at the Power Spot to help future players; it can earn Candy when it returns.

How Gigantamax battles differ
Gigantamax encounters are more difficult than ordinary Max Battles and can feature up to 20 Trainers, compared with up to four in the general Max Battle format. Pokémon that faint in a Gigantamax battle do not recover until the battle ends. These differences can affect how much support you need and what happens if your party goes down; check the battle details in-game before joining. Niantic’s Gigantamax Battles guide.
