The method does not install a browser, require a jailbreak, or guarantee that every site will work. It relies on the third-party SwitchBru DNS service, so avoid entering passwords, payment details, banking information, or other sensitive data.

Can You Use Google on Nintendo Switch?
Nintendo says that browsing the Internet directly on Switch is not possible because the console does not provide a normal browser app. The system does contain a restricted browser for functions such as signing in to Wi-Fi networks, and the SwitchBru workaround redirects that network-registration process to a dashboard with Google and URL options.
This is the important distinction:
- Google Search: May be accessible through the SwitchBru DNS workaround.
- Google Chrome: Is not available as a normal Nintendo Switch application.
- Google Account: Can be used in supported official apps, such as YouTube on original Switch-family consoles in supported countries.
- Gmail, Drive, Docs, and Classroom: May load, but modern websites, sign-ins, scripts, cookies, uploads, and other features may not work correctly.
Nintendo supports changing DNS settings, but it does not officially support SwitchBru as a browser feature.

Which Nintendo Consoles Does This Work On?
The workaround is primarily documented for the original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED Model. It may also trigger the restricted browser on some Nintendo Switch 2 systems, but results can vary. Nintendo’s documentation does not present this DNS method as an officially supported browser, so do not assume it will work on every Switch 2 console.
Nintendo’s current support information also says that the official Switch YouTube app is not compatible with Switch 2. That limitation is separate from the DNS workaround.
Before You Start
You will need:
- A Nintendo Switch-family console with an active Wi-Fi connection.
- Access to the saved Wi-Fi connection’s settings.
- Permission to edit DNS settings on that network.
- The SwitchBru Primary DNS address:
45.55.142.122. - A phone or computer available in case you need help restoring the original network settings.
SwitchBru says that only the Primary DNS needs to be changed. Its service is unofficial, operated by a third party, provided without warranty, and used at your own risk. Nintendo’s ordinary Google DNS values, 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, will not open Google Search by themselves; they are simply public DNS servers.
How to Get Google on Nintendo Switch
- Open System Settings. From the HOME Menu, select the System Settings gear icon.
- Open Internet Settings. Select Internet, then Internet Settings.
- Select your saved Wi-Fi network. Choose the network currently being used by the console.
- Open the connection settings. Select Change Settings.
- Open DNS Settings. Scroll down and select DNS Settings.
- Switch DNS to Manual. Change Automatic to Manual.
- Change Primary DNS. Select Primary DNS, delete the existing value, and enter:
45.55.142.122
Use the standard form above. Some guides show the same address with leading zeroes, such as 045.055.142.122; it represents the same IPv4 address.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
- Save the setting. Select OK after entering the address.
- Reconnect. Return to the network screen and select Connect to This Network.
- Open the registration page. If the console says “Registration is required to use this network,” select Next.
- Open Google. When the SwitchBru dashboard appears, choose the option to continue to Google.
You can then use the on-screen keyboard—or the touchscreen when playing in handheld mode—to search Google. The SwitchBru dashboard may also provide a URL field, allowing you to try opening a specific website directly.
As of September 2026, this remains an unofficial workaround rather than a Nintendo browser feature. It may stop working after a firmware update, a network change, or a SwitchBru service change.
How to Restore Your Normal Wi-Fi Settings
When you finish browsing, return the saved connection to its normal DNS behavior:
- Open System Settings.
- Select Internet.
- Select Internet Settings.
- Choose the saved Wi-Fi network.
- Select Change Settings.
- Select DNS Settings.
- Change Manual back to Automatic.
- Reconnect to the network.
If the browser continues appearing, restart the console and reconnect. SwitchBru also provides a DNS controller page intended to disable the redirect. As a final option, remove and recreate the saved Wi-Fi connection.

Why the Browser May Not Appear
The Switch connects normally
Check that DNS is set to Manual, that 45.55.142.122 is in the Primary DNS field, and that you selected Connect to This Network after saving. Also make sure you edited the Wi-Fi profile the console is actually using.
The DNS is being overridden
SwitchBru warns that some routers, ISPs, and managed networks override DNS requests. Public Wi-Fi, hotel networks, school networks, and workplace networks may also block or alter the connection. Complete any required captive-portal login normally first, then try the workaround only if the network permits it.
The service or console behavior has changed
The workaround depends on a third-party DNS service and Nintendo’s current network behavior. Temporary service outages, firmware updates, router policies, or future changes can prevent the dashboard from loading.

Google loads, but another website fails
Opening Google does not mean that the Switch can use the entire modern web. Websites may fail because they require unsupported browser features, large scripts, cookies, pop-ups, DRM, file transfers, or secure sign-in systems. The restricted browser is better suited to quick searches and lightweight pages than to regular work or school use.

The browser closes
SwitchBru says the browser may close automatically after about 20 minutes. Video playback is also restricted by Nintendo, so websites that depend on video or streaming components may not function.

On the original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED Model, the better option is the official YouTube app, where it is available through the Nintendo eShop. Nintendo documents Google-account sign-in, search, and parental-control behavior for the app. During YouTube searches, the official controls include X to search, Y to insert a space, and B to delete a character. YouTube lists support for up to 720p in handheld mode and 1080p in docked mode.
Nintendo’s current support page says the Switch YouTube app is not compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. The DNS workaround should not be treated as a guaranteed replacement, especially because video playback is limited in the restricted browser.

For the official YouTube app, Nintendo says the Child and Pre-Teen parental-control levels lock the app, while Teen and Not Restricted leave it unlocked. Parents should use Nintendo’s official controls and supervise any unofficial browser access rather than treating the DNS method as a way around restrictions.
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
What This Workaround Cannot Reliably Do
- Install Google Chrome or create a permanent browser application.
- Guarantee access to every website.
- Provide reliable video playback or streaming.
- Guarantee that Gmail, Google Drive, Docs, or Classroom will work.
- Offer browser history, extensions, bookmarks, downloads, or dependable multi-tab browsing.
- Replace a phone, tablet, or computer for banking, shopping, school, or work.
- Override network policies or provide a safe bypass for parental controls.
Is SwitchBru Safe to Use?
The documented procedure changes DNS for one saved Wi-Fi connection; it does not require a hardware modification or jailbreak. However, all traffic involved in the workaround relies on an unofficial third-party DNS service rather than Nintendo. SwitchBru states that it does not collect, store, or retain user data, while also providing the service without warranty.
That combination means you should not treat the service as a trusted, first-party browser. Use a phone or computer for passwords, payment information, banking, private accounts, school credentials, and other sensitive activity.
Useful Official Alternatives
If your goal is YouTube rather than general web browsing, install the official YouTube app on an original Switch-family console through the Nintendo eShop where supported. For Google services that require reliable authentication, file handling, or full web compatibility, use a phone, tablet, or computer instead.
For reference, Nintendo’s official documentation covers browser availability, editing registered network settings, and manual DNS configuration. SwitchBru’s DNS instructions and dashboard explain the unofficial redirect and its limitations.
