The most dependable way to get Hardwood in Stardew Valley is to clear the Large Log blocking the Secret Woods with a Steel Axe, then harvest its six Large Stumps each day. They yield 12 Hardwood daily. To build a bigger supply for large crafting or quest requirements, plant Mahogany Seeds and harvest the mature trees as well.
Unlock the Secret Woods
The Secret Woods entrance is in the northwest of Cindersap Forest, behind a Large Log. You need a Steel Axe or better to remove that log and enter. A Copper Axe can break Large Stumps, but it cannot clear the entrance log—a key distinction if you can chop stumps elsewhere but have not reached this area yet. See the Secret Woods and Large Stump entries.

Harvest the daily stumps
Once inside, chop all six Large Stumps. Each yields 2 Hardwood, for a predictable total of 12 per day, and the stumps regrow daily. Two are tucked away through covered passages in the woods, so explore beyond the most visible stumps if you want the full yield. The area also contains hostile slimes, so bring equipment and healing items suited to your combat level. The Hardwood entry lists the yields and other sources.
Large Stumps require a Copper Axe or better and yield 25 Foraging experience when chopped. The entrance Large Log has the higher Steel Axe threshold; upgrading only to Copper opens stump-harvesting opportunities, not the Secret Woods route.

Grow Mahogany Trees for a larger supply
Mahogany Trees are the best way to expand beyond the Secret Woods’ fixed daily harvest. Chopping a mature tree with any axe gives 8–13 Hardwood. Plant Mahogany Seeds wherever you have room, and use Tree Fertilizer if you want to accelerate growth. According to the Mahogany Tree entry, fertilized seeds have a 60% chance to advance one growth stage each night, including in winter. Planting several seeds helps build a buffer for a large one-time need, though the exact time to harvest will vary.
Choose the route that fits your farm
| Source | Requirement | Yield or benefit | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Secret Woods | Steel Axe to clear the entrance; Copper Axe or better to chop stumps | 12 Hardwood daily from six regrowing stumps | Fixed daily supply; hostile slimes are present |
| Forest Farm | Forest Farm map; Copper Axe or better | Eight additional respawning stumps, or 16 Hardwood daily | Only available on this farm map |
| Four Corners | Four Corners map; Copper Axe or better | One additional respawning stump, or 2 Hardwood daily | Only available on this farm map |
| Mahogany grove | Mahogany Seeds and time for trees to grow | 8–13 Hardwood per mature tree | Requires seed acquisition and growth time |
| Other sources | Varies by activity, progression, map, or update | Supplemental Hardwood | Often gated, random, or not a repeatable daily yield |
The Forest Farm stumps are additional to the Secret Woods route. The Four Corners stump is in the map’s top-left area and also adds to that route. These yields and mechanics are reported by the Stardew Valley Wiki entries, crawled in 2026; they are game mechanics, not independent measurements.
Use other sources as bonuses, not a daily plan
Hardwood can also come from Mystic Trees, mine and Skull Cavern containers, a Woodskip Fish Pond at population six, Mystery Boxes, a pet at maximum friendship, and event-specific opportunities. These sources depend on progression, randomness, or game state, so they are less predictable than the stumps and a planted grove.
On floors 41–69 of the Dangerous Mines, Hardwood is available when the relevant challenge condition is active. The wiki also lists a Desert Festival trade of up to 100 Hardwood for 3 Calico Eggs each. Because this is event- and version-dependent, check the current event and game version rather than making it your core supply plan. The Hardwood source list covers these alternatives.

Plan around what you need Hardwood for
Hardwood is used in progression and crafting, including the Stable, Heavy Tapper, Fish Smoker, Mushroom Log, and the Giant Stump repair quest. Requirements differ by recipe or task, and the wiki includes content introduced in later updates. Check the specific recipe or quest in your current game version before setting a target; for a large one-time requirement, combine the daily stump route with a Mahogany grove rather than relying on random drops.
