The bucket becomes a Honey Bucket, which you can carry and pour elsewhere. Honey is a liquid; a Honey Block is a separate item.
Collect honey from a Bee Hive
- Explore the Underground Jungle and look for a Bee Hive. Honey commonly pools at the bottom of a hive, and small patches can also appear nearby. Honey may appear when Hive blocks are destroyed. Official Terraria Wiki: Honey
- Bring an Empty Bucket and stand beside a sufficient amount of honey.
- Use the bucket on the honey. It becomes a Honey Bucket, which can be carried and poured to move the liquid. Official Terraria Wiki: Buckets
Craft a Honey Bucket instead
The current recipe listing gives a Honey Bucket as one Honey Block plus one Empty Bucket at a Campfire. This is a separate route from scooping natural liquid honey. Recipe behavior may differ on legacy platforms or versions, so check your version if the recipe is unavailable. Buckets and Honey Block

Other items that create honey
A Bottomless Honey Bucket, Honey Bombs, and Honey Rockets can also create honey. These are alternatives if you already have access to those items; for a first supply, collecting honey from a hive with an Empty Bucket is the straightforward method. Official Terraria Wiki: Honey
What liquid honey is useful for
Honey flows more slowly than lava. Standing or swimming in a sufficiently sized pool grants the Honey life-regeneration buff: the pool must be at least two tiles wide and 5/8 of a tile deep, and the buff lasts 30 seconds after you leave it. Official Terraria Wiki: Honey
