Current ways to earn loot boxes
Log in, play, and complete challenges
Blizzard’s July 2026 Overwatch Retail Patch Notes say players can earn loot boxes by logging in, completing challenges, winning games, and staying active week after week. The notes include Base, Epic, and Legendary boxes, but don’t establish a universal current number of boxes or a fixed weekly cap. Check the live challenge list and event screens in your game; those show the rewards and requirements that apply to your season.

Complete weekly match rewards when they’re offered
When loot boxes returned in Season 15 in February 2025, Blizzard said players could earn up to three per week by completing up to 27 games, with wins counting as double. That is a Season 15 rule, not a confirmed current target. If a current weekly challenge offers boxes, follow its in-game progress counter rather than assuming the old 27-game figure still applies.

Blizzard’s Season 18 announcement listed a Base Loot Box at Hero level 5, Epic boxes at levels 25, 35, and 45, and Legendary boxes at levels 30, 40, and 50. These are season-specific milestones, not confirmed permanent thresholds. Review the rewards shown on your hero’s progression screen to verify what your current season awards.

Look for event challenges and community rewards
Limited-time events can add their own loot-box challenges or improve rewards through community progress. For example, Blizzard’s 10th Anniversary event ran from May 12 to June 1, 2026, and included Anniversary Loot Boxes earned through challenges plus a community progress bar that could upgrade weekly rewards. That event has ended; look at the current event screen for any new, dated offer.
Claim official Drops only during an announced promotion
Blizzard’s February 2026 Spotlight promotion offered one Epic Loot Box for one hour of viewing on eligible creator channels with Drops enabled and linked accounts. This was a limited promotion, not an always-available way to earn boxes. When Blizzard announces a new Drop, check its eligibility, viewing time, dates, and account-linking requirements before watching.

Check the current Battle Pass rewards
Battle Pass rewards vary by season and track. In Season 15, Blizzard listed one free-track Legendary Loot Box and two more in the Premium track. That lineup does not establish what a later pass contains. Inspect the current pass before buying or progressing on the assumption that it includes boxes.
How many games do you need to play?
There is no confirmed current universal match count in the latest general earning guidance. The often-quoted target of up to 27 games for up to three boxes per week applied to Season 15 in 2025, with wins counting as double. For your current season, use the progress requirements displayed beside each active challenge; some rewards may depend on wins, while others may use different tasks.

Can you get loot boxes for free?
Yes. The documented routes include login rewards, challenges, match activity, Hero Progression, and limited-time events; these do not all require a Premium Battle Pass. A past free Battle Pass track also included a Legendary box in Season 15, but current pass contents should be checked in game. Blizzard’s available guidance does not establish whether loot boxes can currently be purchased directly, so don’t assume a shop purchase is available.
Why old guides may say loot boxes are gone
At Overwatch 2’s 2022 launch, Blizzard said loot boxes were going away as the game moved to a Battle Pass and direct-shop model. Blizzard later announced their return in Season 15. Launch-era advice that boxes no longer exist is therefore outdated, while old event purchase pages do not prove that boxes are sold now. Blizzard also said in its 2022 Anniversary Remix announcement that those event boxes would stop being sold after that event and unopened boxes would open automatically before the Overwatch 2 launch.

What loot boxes contain
For standard boxes, Blizzard reported average drop rates of 5.1% for Legendary items, 21.93% for Epic, 96.26% for Rare, and 97.97% for Common. These are per-rarity averages, so they add up to more than 100% because a box contains multiple items. Blizzard also said a standard box guarantees at least one Rare-or-better item, an Epic within five consecutive boxes, and a Legendary within twenty. A Legendary Loot Box guarantees at least one Legendary item. These are the published 2025 figures and guarantees; they describe contents, not how to earn boxes.
