It is listed as a digital Switch 2 game, not an original Nintendo Switch game. If you own only the original Switch, it cannot run this release.
First, check which Nintendo Switch you own
Nintendo’s current US store listing names EA SPORTS Madden NFL 27 for Nintendo Switch 2. It does not list an edition for the original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Support explains that Switch 2 can play Nintendo Switch games, but the reverse is not true: original Switch hardware cannot run games made for Switch 2. See Nintendo’s Madden NFL 27 listing and its Switch 2 compatibility guidance.

- You have a Nintendo Switch 2: You can buy and download the game without buying another console.
- You have only the original Nintendo Switch: You would need a Switch 2 to play this release. Backward compatibility lets Switch 2 play many original Switch games; it does not make Switch 2 games playable on the original console. Nintendo’s compatibility information also notes that compatibility can vary for Switch games played on Switch 2.
Buy and download Madden NFL 27 on Switch 2
- On your Switch 2, open Nintendo eShop.
- Search for EA SPORTS Madden NFL 27 and open the listing that specifies Nintendo Switch 2.
- Check the listing for your region, current price, edition, and availability, then purchase the digital game.
- Download it from the eShop. Nintendo lists the download size as 57 GB; that is the listed file size, not a separately stated minimum free-space requirement. Make sure your console has room for the download.
Nintendo’s US launch announcement listed a regular price of $69.99 in 2026. Store prices and offers may change, so use the live listing for the price that applies to your account and region. The release was listed as available worldwide on August 13, 2026; see Nintendo’s availability announcement.
Play modes and online requirements
Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld play modes. Internet access and a Nintendo Switch Online membership are required for online play, according to the product listing. That stated requirement applies to online features; the listing does not say that a membership is required for offline play.
