To get regular Mew in Pokémon GO, complete the eight-part Special Research story A Mythical Discovery. Open the Research menu and select Special to find it. The documented task list awards the Mew encounter at stage 7; stage 8 asks you to catch it.
Where to find A Mythical Discovery
From the map, tap the binoculars-shaped Research control, then open the Special tab. Niantic says this tab shows active and completed Special Research, including research you have already finished. Special Research is assigned by Professor Willow rather than obtained by spinning PokéStops, and it remains available until completed.

A Mythical Discovery tasks and rewards
The objectives below come from Pokémon GO Hub’s walkthrough, last updated December 2, 2020; Nintendo Life’s August 20, 2022 walkthrough corroborates the eight-stage route and most objectives. These are dated third-party guides, not current official task notes, so follow the wording shown in your game if it differs.

The two walkthroughs disagree on one stage 7 item reward: Pokémon GO Hub lists 20 Ultra Balls, while Nintendo Life lists 5 Great Balls. Check the reward shown in the app rather than relying on either guide for that item.
How to plan for the longer tasks
- Expect several kinds of regular play. The objectives cover catching and transferring Pokémon, PokéStop spins, Buddy Candy, Egg hatches, throw types, Gym and Raid battles, evolutions, leveling, and Kanto medal progress.
- Allow time for Magikarp. Stage 6 requires evolving one. The guides establish the task, but do not establish your current Candy total or a current Candy cost; check the Pokémon’s evolution screen in game.
- Do not assume AR is required. The Pokémon GO Hub walkthrough says Mew can be caught without AR mode, but that is third-party guidance rather than a current official rule in the consulted sources.
Does A Mythical Discovery give Shiny Mew?
No: the documented A Mythical Discovery route is for regular Mew, and the walkthrough does not establish that it awards a shiny encounter. The consulted sources do not verify whether separate Shiny Mew research is available, who would qualify, or whether an event is active on October 8, 2026. Check current official Pokémon GO announcements and your in-game research list for any separate shiny opportunity; do not treat the regular Mew quest as a Shiny Mew route.

Do you need a Poké Ball Plus or another physical item?
No physical purchase is established as a requirement for the Pokémon GO Special Research route. The Pokémon Company Support says the Mew associated with Poké Ball Plus can be transferred one time into a single copy of Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! That is not evidence that the accessory grants Mew in Pokémon GO. The consulted sources do not show a physical accessory, printed guide, card, or Mew merchandise unlocking Mew in the mobile game.
