How to Get More Materia Slots and AP in Final Fantasy VII Remake

Weapon slots come from SP upgrades in each weapon’s own core tree; materia levels come from AP earned in battles while equipped. Learn how to check linked slots, use manuscripts and avoid confusing the two systems.

To add materia slots to a weapon in Final Fantasy VII Remake, open that weapon’s upgrade tree and spend SP on a slot-related core upgrade. To level materia, equip it and earn AP in battles. These are separate systems: weapon upgrades use SP; materia levels use AP. “Weapon AP” is not the currency used to upgrade weapons.

Weapon trees are specific to each weapon, so check the weapon you intend to use before spending SP. This guide covers Final Fantasy VII Remake, including its Intergrade presentation; it does not describe Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the 1997 original, or Crisis Core.

Weapon slots, materia AP and weapon SP are different things

The similar-sounding systems are easy to mix up, but each has a distinct job:

Manuscripts Provide extra SP for weapon upgrades. Earn them from certain activities and rewards, including many Hard Mode rewards.

Square Enix’s official systems page describes weapons as growing through upgrades in their cores and materia as equipment used in weapons and armor. GameSpot’s weapon-upgrade and manuscript guides, both published April 28, 2020, explain the SP system and manuscript rewards. GameWith’s materia guide was last updated August 21, 2022.

The practical distinction is simple: look for a weapon’s core tree when you want to change that weapon, and keep the desired materia equipped when you want it to grow. Spending AP does not add weapon slots, while SP and manuscripts are not a way to raise materia levels. Keeping these goals separate also helps when you are planning a session: choose a weapon-upgrade goal or a materia-leveling goal, then pursue the system that actually affects it.

How to unlock more slots on a weapon

  1. Open the weapon-upgrade menu. Select the character and weapon whose available slots you want to change. The upgrade applies to that weapon, not to every weapon the character owns.
  2. Inspect the selected weapon’s core tree. Find an available slot-related upgrade. The trees are weapon-specific, and their upgrade order or available nodes are not necessarily identical.
  3. Spend SP on the slot node. If the slot-related upgrade is available and you have enough SP, purchase it in that weapon’s tree. Check the menu’s displayed SP requirement before confirming; there is no single cost to assume for every weapon or node.
  4. Return to your materia loadout and check the result. Confirm the weapon has the slot configuration you expected, then equip materia in the available slots.

Do not assume that buying a slot upgrade for one weapon adds a slot to another. If you switch weapons, inspect the newly selected weapon’s own loadout and core tree. GameSpot’s upgrade guide notes that unlocked weapon stats and benefits apply while that weapon is equipped; the upgrade is not a character-wide bonus.

Before spending SP, it helps to decide what you actually want the extra capacity to do. If you have a specific materia setup in mind, check whether the selected weapon’s current layout can hold it and whether the slot-related node is available. If you are comparing weapons for a broader role, include their combat characteristics and abilities in that decision rather than treating slot count as the only measure of value. A node purchase is specific to its tree, so checking the selected weapon first avoids spending SP toward a different loadout than the one you plan to use.

Check whether the slot is linked

A slot count alone does not tell you how every materia combination will behave. Some slots are linked, allowing paired materia to interact. Square Enix confirms that pairing materia can change its effects. When arranging a build, check both the number of slots and how they are connected; two layouts with the same number of slots may support different pairings.

Think of total capacity and usable pairings as two separate checks. First confirm that the weapon has enough spaces for the materia you intend to equip. Then inspect the layout to see whether the relevant spaces are linked. A weapon can meet the first requirement without meeting the second. If you change weapons after setting up materia, review the new weapon’s links and loadout instead of assuming the old arrangement carries over unchanged.

Armor slots are a separate equipment property

The weapon-core upgrade system is described as a way to strengthen weapons. It does not establish a method for purchasing additional armor slots through weapon cores. Inspect armor in the Materia & Equipment screen and treat its displayed slots as part of that armor’s equipment configuration. Materia can be equipped in both weapons and armor, but only the weapon tree is covered by the slot-upgrade instructions above.

That means the answer to “How do I get more slots on armor?” is not to spend SP on a weapon. Check the armor you have equipped and compare its displayed materia configuration with another piece of armor if you are considering a change. The mechanics described for weapon cores do not show that armor slots can be expanded through the same upgrade path.

How to earn AP and level materia

  1. Equip the materia you want to develop. Put it in a weapon or armor slot before entering battles. AP is earned by equipped materia, so materia left unequipped will not gain AP from those fights.
  2. Fight and earn AP. Battles award AP that contributes to the equipped materia’s growth. AP raises materia levels; it does not buy weapon-core upgrades.
  3. Check the materia’s progress after battles. If a particular materia is a priority, make sure it remains equipped as you continue playing. You can change the loadout between battles to focus on different materia.

If you are leveling several materia, review the loadout before a stretch of battles and give the available slots to the ones you want to develop. If you change your priorities, adjust the loadout before the next fight. This is a straightforward way to avoid spending time in battles while the materia you meant to train is sitting unequipped. The same basic check applies whether the materia is in a weapon or armor slot: it needs to be equipped to gain AP from those fights.

There is no universally best weapon for building materia: the useful choice depends on its slot configuration and the materia combination you want to carry. For character performance, also weigh a weapon’s attack, magic and defensive profile, its available core upgrades, and the ability or play style you prefer. A slot upgrade is only one part of a weapon choice.

What “weapon AP” means in practice

If you are asking how to get stronger weapons, look for SP and weapon upgrades rather than an AP farm. If you are asking how to improve materia, equip it and earn AP through battles. Keeping that distinction straight prevents two common dead ends: searching for an AP option in a weapon’s core tree, or expecting SP spent on a weapon to raise materia levels.

  • More weapon slots: inspect the weapon’s core tree and use SP on an available slot-related node.
  • Higher materia levels: equip the materia and earn AP from battles.
  • More weapon-upgrade capacity: seek manuscripts, which award SP rather than materia AP.

When a guide or player discussion says “weapon AP,” clarify which progression they mean. For the weapon itself, the relevant questions are whether you have SP and whether its tree has the slot or other core node you want. For materia, the relevant questions are whether it is equipped and whether battles are awarding AP. Manuscripts belong to the first track because they provide additional SP; they are not a shortcut for raising materia.

How to get more SP with manuscripts

Manuscripts award extra SP for weapon upgrades; they are not AP items and do not directly level materia. GameSpot’s manuscript guide describes early examples from the Moogle Emporium, Chapter 9 and Chapter 14 Coliseum activities, and side quests. Many other manuscript rewards are tied to Hard Mode bosses and side quests.

Hard Mode becomes available after you finish the story, and Chapter Select lets you return to chapters. That makes manuscripts relevant when you are pursuing additional weapon upgrades after your first story clear. The exact reward depends on the activity; check the relevant chapter’s objectives rather than assuming every quest or fight awards one.

There is no universal manuscript checklist that can replace checking the reward for the activity you are doing. The examples above show that manuscripts can come from different kinds of content, including shop access, Coliseum activities and quests, while many later rewards are associated with Hard Mode. If you are short on SP for a particular weapon node, treat a manuscript as an additional source of weapon-upgrade SP, then return to that weapon’s tree and confirm how much SP you have available. Do not expect a manuscript to add a materia slot on its own; the weapon upgrade still has to be selected in the relevant core tree.

Plan SP around the weapon you will use

Because a weapon’s upgrades belong to its own tree, decide which weapon you are improving before spending SP. Compare its slot layout and available core upgrades with the weapon’s combat profile and ability. If the goal is a particular materia pairing, prioritize whether that weapon can accommodate the desired layout; if the goal is a different combat role, evaluate its other upgrades as well. No single weapon is established as best for every character or build.

A useful order is to identify your intended weapon, inspect its current loadout, and then check the tree for an available slot-related upgrade and its SP requirement. If the node is not currently available, avoid assuming that a different weapon’s tree will unlock it. If you are not certain which weapon you want to keep equipped, compare the whole package—slots, links, combat profile, core benefits and ability—before committing SP. Your SP improves the selected weapon’s tree, so a purchase should match a weapon you actually expect to use.

Can you farm AP faster after finishing the story?

A Game8 guide excerpt reports a 3× AP bonus after clearing the main story. Treat that figure as a version-dependent guide claim rather than a guaranteed rate for every edition or situation: the exact stacking rules and a best repeatable route are not established here. The same excerpt says equipment does not increase AP growth in the base game. If your game’s displayed progression differs, rely on the version you are playing rather than assuming a route or equipment bonus applies across versions.

For a straightforward approach, keep the materia you want to level equipped during battles you are already completing. If you are specifically optimizing AP after the story, verify the reported bonus and its behavior in your copy of the game before investing time in a particular farming loop. There is not enough confirmed information here to recommend a precise encounter, route, or stacking setup as the fastest method.

In other words, the post-clear bonus is a reason to check your own game, not a basis for promising a fixed AP total or a particular number of battles. The available claim does not establish whether the bonus stacks with other effects, which encounters are fastest, or whether behavior is identical across editions. If you want to compare your progress, look at the in-game materia progression as you play and keep the materia you care about equipped. Do not spend time changing equipment solely to chase an AP increase unless your version shows that the effect exists.

Choosing a weapon when materia capacity matters

Compare the actual weapon loadouts and upgrades available to your character rather than choosing by slot count alone. Consider these factors together:

  • Number of slots: Check how much materia the weapon can carry in its current configuration.
  • Linked slots: See whether the layout supports the pairings you intend to use. Linked materia can interact to change effects.
  • Core upgrades: Review the selected weapon’s available benefits and whether a slot-related node is present.
  • Combat profile: Weigh attack, magic and defensive characteristics, plus the weapon ability and play style you want.
  • Time spent upgrading: SP spent in one weapon’s tree improves that weapon; it does not transfer its unlocked benefits to another weapon.

A weapon with more room for materia is not automatically the right choice if its other characteristics or ability do not suit the role you need. Conversely, a preferred weapon may become more flexible when you unlock the slot upgrade available in its own tree.

For a practical comparison, start with the job the character needs to perform, then check whether the weapon’s slots can support the materia combination for that job. Next, inspect the linked-slot arrangement and available core upgrades, including any slot-related option. Finally, weigh the weapon’s attack, magic and defensive profile and its ability against your preferred play style. This avoids choosing a weapon solely because of a larger-looking slot count when the rest of its configuration is a poor fit.

There is not enough information to name a universal best weapon or rank every weapon by slot efficiency. The right choice depends on the specific character, the weapon tree and the use you have in mind. A weapon upgrade is worthwhile when its own benefits fit your intended setup—not merely because more slots sound better in isolation.

Troubleshooting: why did I not get the result I expected?

The weapon still has the same number of slots

  • Confirm that you spent SP on a slot-related core upgrade rather than a different node.
  • Check that you were viewing the intended weapon’s tree; upgrades are weapon-specific.
  • Review the weapon’s actual loadout after leaving the upgrade screen instead of assuming a purchase affects all weapons.
  • Check the displayed slot arrangement, including links, rather than relying only on memory of the previous layout.

Materia is not gaining levels

  • Confirm that the materia is equipped in a weapon or armor slot before the battle.
  • Remember that AP raises materia levels, while SP is used for weapon cores.
  • If you are relying on a post-story AP bonus or an equipment effect, verify that claim for your game version; the reported 3× bonus and equipment behavior are not established as universal across versions.
  • After changing your loadout, verify that the materia you intend to grow is still equipped for subsequent battles.

You have SP but cannot find the slot you want

Inspect the selected weapon’s core tree. The slot-related node may not be available in the same place or order on every weapon. Do not assume that another weapon’s tree, or a character-wide upgrade, will provide the slot you are looking for. If a node is not available, compare the currently selected weapon’s tree rather than looking for a universal slot upgrade.

You want more slots on armor

Check the armor’s displayed materia configuration in the Materia & Equipment screen. The weapon-core system does not establish that armor slots can be added by spending SP in a weapon tree.

You are unsure whether to chase a manuscript or AP

Choose based on the goal: manuscripts provide SP for weapon upgrades, while equipped materia earns AP from battles. If you are trying to buy a slot node, additional AP will not help. If you are trying to level materia, a manuscript is not the relevant reward.

Scope and source notes

These instructions concern Final Fantasy VII Remake and its Intergrade presentation. They should not be treated as guidance for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the 1997 release, or Crisis Core. The official Square Enix systems page supports the distinction between weapon cores and equipped materia; the SP and manuscript details are described in GameSpot guides by Matt Espineli, Phil Hornshaw and Nick Sherman (weapon upgrades) and Phil Hornshaw (manuscripts), both dated April 28, 2020. GameWith’s materia guide lists an August 21, 2022 update. The specific post-clear AP bonus is attributed to a Game8 guide excerpt and should be checked against the version being played.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical advice on AP farming is deliberately limited: the reported 3× post-clear bonus is a claim from the Game8 guide, but its full page was not accessible and its exact stacking rules and fastest route are not verified. The Square Enix systems page is official and was accessed October 11, 2026; its English explanation here is a paraphrase of the mechanics, not a direct quotation. Check the current game version’s menus and displayed progression where behavior matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get more materia slots on a weapon in Final Fantasy VII Remake?

Open the upgrade tree for the specific weapon, find an available slot-related core upgrade and spend the required SP. Then return to the Materia & Equipment loadout to check the weapon’s slot count and links. The upgrade does not apply to every weapon.

Can I use weapon SP to add slots to armor?

The weapon-core upgrade system applies to weapons; it does not establish a way to purchase armor slots with SP. Check the armor’s displayed slots in the Materia & Equipment screen and treat them as part of that armor’s configuration.

What is the difference between AP and SP?

AP is earned by equipped materia in battles and raises materia levels. SP is spent in weapon core trees to unlock weapon benefits, including slot-related upgrades when available. Manuscripts award extra SP, not materia AP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I farm AP fast after finishing the story?

A Game8 guide excerpt reports a 3× AP bonus after clearing the main story, but exact stacking behavior and the best repeatable route are not established. Keep the materia you want to level equipped during battles and check the bonus in your version rather than relying on an unverified route.

Do all weapons have the same slot upgrades?

No. Weapon trees are distinct, and the slot-related nodes and their order are not necessarily the same. Inspect the core tree for the weapon you plan to use before spending SP.

What do manuscripts do?

Manuscripts provide extra SP for weapon upgrades; they do not directly level materia. GameSpot lists examples from the Moogle Emporium, Chapter 9 and Chapter 14 Coliseum activities, side quests, and many Hard Mode rewards. Hard Mode is available after finishing the story, and Chapter Select lets you revisit chapters.

Which weapon is best if I want more materia capacity?

There is no universal best choice established here. Compare slot count and links, available core upgrades, attack, magic and defensive profile, and the ability and play style you prefer. Weapon upgrades affect that weapon while it is equipped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For more weapon slots, spend SP on an available slot-related upgrade in that weapon’s own core tree. For stronger materia, equip it and earn AP in battles. Manuscripts add SP, not AP, and the reported post-story 3× AP bonus should be checked in your version rather than treated as a guaranteed farming rule.
