On a new gaming PC, low FPS, stuttering, and high temperatures can come from settings, background activity, drivers, or a component reaching its thermal limit. Diagnose the symptom before buying parts: record when it happens, check CPU/GPU and memory use while the game runs, verify the game is using the intended GPU, then look for signs of actual thermal throttling rather than judging by temperature alone.

Start by identifying what is going wrong

“Low FPS” and “stuttering” describe different problems. Low FPS usually means the game is persistently rendering fewer frames than you expect. Stuttering is an uneven experience: frames may arrive inconsistently, producing hitches even when the displayed average FPS seems acceptable. Overheating is a separate diagnosis. A temperature rise during a demanding game does not, by itself, prove that the PC is overheating or causing the performance problem.

Before changing settings, write down the game, resolution, graphics preset, display mode (fullscreen, windowed, or borderless), and what you observe. Note whether the issue occurs in one game or several, whether it began after a game, Windows, driver, BIOS, or hardware change, and whether the symptom is constant or appears only after playing for a while. These details help distinguish a game-specific setting from a system-wide problem.

Change one thing at a time and retest the same scene or workload when practical. Otherwise, you may not know which change mattered. There is no supported FPS gain to promise for these steps: results depend on the particular PC, game, settings, and cause.

  • Streamlined redux edition: proven Noctua quality at an attractive price point, wide range of optional accessories (anti-vibration mounts, S-ATA adaptors, y-splitters, extension cables, etc.)

It also helps to describe the symptom in observable terms rather than relying on “it feels slow.” For example, note whether the frame-rate counter stays low throughout play, or whether it is usually steady but briefly dips during a hitch. Record whether the hitch happens at a repeatable point, such as entering an area, or at unpredictable intervals. This does not identify the cause on its own, but it makes later comparisons more useful.

Keep the test conditions consistent. If you compare performance before and after a setting change, use the same game, scene, resolution, preset, and display mode where possible. A different scene or workload can change CPU, GPU, and memory demands, making a before-and-after comparison misleading. Avoid changing several settings at once or assuming that a single FPS reading proves the PC is fixed or faulty.

Check resource use while the game is running

Open Task Manager during a game session and look at CPU, GPU, memory, and disk activity. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance recommends monitoring resource use, closing apps you are not using, checking startup and background activity, and keeping software current. A busy resource is a clue about what to investigate, not proof that a component is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for activity that coincides with the hitch

If CPU or disk activity jumps at the same time as a pause, check which app or process is using it. Close only applications you recognize and do not need during play. Also review startup and background apps if the PC is slow outside games or if unexpected activity continues after you close a game. Avoid ending unfamiliar processes just because they use resources; some belong to Windows, drivers, or other software the PC needs.

Memory pressure can also matter. NVIDIA’s developer guidance on game-graphics stuttering discusses GPU resources, memory pressure, and paging as possible technical contributors. That context does not mean that a particular stutter is caused by video memory, nor does it establish a consumer-facing threshold for diagnosing your PC. Use the timing of the symptom and the resource readings as evidence, not as a verdict based on one number.

Compare CPU and GPU activity rather than treating any high reading as a fault. If one resource is heavily occupied while another is less active, that may help identify which side of the workload deserves closer attention, but it is not proof of a defective part or a complete diagnosis. The important question is whether the activity changes at the same time as the symptom and whether that pattern repeats under the same conditions.

Task Manager is useful for checking Windows resource use and finding apps to investigate; it is not a full diagnosis tool for every game or graphics issue. If the problem is intermittent, observe the system while the hitch occurs instead of looking only after the game has closed. A reading taken at idle cannot explain what happened under load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the pattern to narrow the cause

  • One game is affected: compare that game’s settings and display mode with a game that runs normally. A title-specific issue is more plausible than a system-wide fault, though the pattern alone cannot identify the cause.
  • Several games are affected: check shared factors such as Windows updates, graphics drivers, background activity, power mode, and whether games are using the intended GPU.
  • The problem appears after a change: note what changed and investigate that software or hardware change first. Do not assume a driver update, Windows update, or hardware change is responsible without testing.

This comparison is a way to order your checks, not a guarantee. One game can stress the PC differently from another, and multiple games can share a setting or software condition. Use the game-by-game pattern alongside resource activity and the timing of any recent change.

Verify that the game uses the right GPU

A PC with more than one GPU can run a game on a GPU that is not the one you intended. On Windows 11, set a per-app preference at Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Select or add the game, open its options, choose High performance, and save. Restart the game so it can start with the changed preference.

This setting is relevant only when the PC has multiple GPUs and the game is being assigned to the wrong one or needs a different per-app preference. It is not a general remedy for every low-FPS or stuttering problem. If you are unsure which GPU is installed or which one the game is using, check the PC or component maker’s specifications and the system’s graphics information before drawing a conclusion.

Do not assume that a multi-GPU setting is necessary on every gaming PC. First establish whether the system has more than one graphics processor and whether the game is using the unintended one. If it is already using the GPU you intend, changing this preference may not address the symptom. After changing it, restart the game and compare the same scene rather than judging from a different session or workload.

Check display mode and Windows 11 windowed-game support

For compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running windowed or borderless, Windows 11 offers Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft says this can move supported games to a newer flip-model presentation path, which can reduce frame latency and enable supported features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate. The feature is limited to compatible games in those display modes; it is not a universal stutter fix and does not apply to every game or fullscreen configuration.

If you use a supported game in windowed or borderless mode, check Windows 11’s graphics settings for the windowed-game optimization option and test with the game restarted. If the title is not compatible or the issue persists, continue troubleshooting rather than treating the option as a diagnosis.

Keep the compatibility limits in mind: this is not a general Windows switch for every game, API, or display mode. If you are playing a DirectX 10 or 11 title in a supported windowed or borderless configuration, the option is relevant to test; otherwise, do not expect it to solve the problem. Microsoft describes possible frame-latency and feature benefits, not a promised FPS increase for a specific PC.

Update software carefully and test power mode

Install Windows and graphics-driver updates

Check Windows Update, including optional driver updates, and install relevant updates for the PC. If the graphics driver appears to be a plausible cause—for example, the problem began after a graphics-driver change—use the official driver channel of the GPU maker for the exact GPU and operating system to update or, where appropriate, roll back. Avoid making third-party driver-updater software the default troubleshooting method.

Microsoft identifies outdated software, updates, background apps, storage, and resource use among the factors that can affect Windows performance. That does not mean every update will improve a game, or that an update is the cause whenever performance changes. Record the timing of changes and retest after each relevant adjustment.

  • Streamlined Fan Connections: Daisy-chain multiple fans together and control them all through just one 4-pin PWM connector and one +5V ARGB connector.
  • Lighting Made Easy: Eight LEDs per fan shine bright with customisable lighting through your motherboard’s built-in ARGB control (requires compatible motherboard).
  • Precise PWM Speeds: Set your fan speeds up to 2,100 RPM while providing up to 72.8 CFM airflow to your system.
  • CORSAIR AirGuide Technology: Anti-vortex vanes direct airflow at your hottest components for concentrated cooling, pushing air in the direction you need when mounted to a radiator or heatsink.
  • High Static Pressure: RS fans work well as radiator fans with a static pressure of 2.8mm-H2O to push through obstructions.

Check that a driver or update actually applies to your hardware and operating system before installing it. If performance changed immediately after a particular driver change, that timing makes the driver worth investigating, but it does not establish causation. Use the GPU maker’s official channel for the exact model, and make one relevant change at a time so you can tell whether the result changed.

Windows performance troubleshooting is broader than graphics drivers. Microsoft’s guidance also calls attention to background activity, startup apps, software updates, storage, and resource use. If the game’s performance issue coincides with another app or with system-wide sluggishness, check those shared factors rather than repeatedly reinstalling graphics drivers without evidence.

Understand the trade-off in Windows power mode

Windows power mode can be set to Best performance through Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode on Windows 11 devices that show that control. Microsoft cautions that this setting can increase power consumption and warmth. Treat it as a diagnostic or usage choice, not a guaranteed stutter cure. If the PC becomes warmer after changing modes, that alone does not prove it is throttling.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Power mode is therefore a trade-off to consider, not a free performance upgrade. If you test Best performance, compare performance under the same game conditions and also note any change in warmth or power use. If it does not improve the symptom, do not leave it enabled on the assumption that it must help; Microsoft notes that higher power use and warmth are possible consequences.

Tell normal gaming heat from thermal throttling

A processor working hard in a game can run hotter than it does at idle. Intel says there is no single normal processor temperature range that applies across systems: workload, CPU cooling, chassis design, and fan control all affect the result. Its gaming-temperature guidance notes that higher CPU temperatures during gameplay can be normal. A temperature reading alone is not enough to diagnose overheating.

Thermal trouble matters when it affects operation. Intel Support defines throttling this way: “Throttling is a mechanism in Intel® Processors to reduce the clock speed when the temperature in the system reaches above TJ Max (or Tcase).” Intel’s article “What Is Throttling and How Can It Be Resolved?” was last reviewed April 9, 2026.

Look for evidence that performance is being limited: processor frequency falling under load alongside sustained performance loss, a system that repeatedly shuts down, or a decline that consistently tracks rising heat. For a possible GPU-side thermal issue, use telemetry and specifications for the exact GPU model. There is no universal GPU temperature limit established here for every card and PC design, so do not diagnose one from a generic number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters on a new PC because a warm case, louder fans, or a brief rise in a temperature reading can accompany a demanding workload without demonstrating a fault. Compare the temperature behavior with performance and frequency under the same load. A sustained drop in performance alongside signs of throttling is more concerning than a temperature rise by itself; repeated shutdowns merit attention even if you do not know the exact temperature limit.

  • 【Perfect Match】The PC fan can be used not only as a case fan, but is also suitable for use with a cpu cooler to create a cooling effect together, which can take away the dry heat from the case and the high temperature generated by the CPU in operation, allowing for maximum cooling; Ideal for cases, radiators and CPU coolers.

Do not compare an unspecified CPU or GPU against a single online “safe gaming temperature” and treat that number as universal. Intel’s explanation emphasizes that workload, cooling, chassis, and fan control affect processor temperature. For your actual processor, PC, and graphics card, use the exact manufacturer’s specifications and telemetry. The available symptoms can guide what to check, but they do not supply one threshold that applies to every new gaming PC.

Compare symptoms before deciding heat is the cause

  • Brief temperature rise with stable performance: this alone does not establish a fault.
  • Performance loss that tracks heat and reduced frequency: this is stronger evidence to investigate cooling and thermal behavior.
  • Repeated shutdowns during gaming: treat this as a serious system symptom and contact the PC maker if the computer is new or under warranty.
  • Stuttering with no corresponding thermal evidence: continue checking settings, resource use, drivers, and game-specific behavior instead of replacing cooling hardware on speculation.

Also separate CPU-side and GPU-side evidence. A processor frequency drop is relevant to a suspected CPU thermal limit; for a GPU-side concern, use the exact GPU’s own telemetry and product specifications. Do not use a processor temperature reading to diagnose the graphics card, or the reverse. If the evidence does not match the part you suspect, return to the broader software, settings, and resource checks.

Choose the right cooling response for your PC

If you built the PC yourself

For a DIY system with verified overheating symptoms, check that the installed thermal solution is suitable for the exact processor and mounted correctly. Confirm that fans are operating and not obstructed. These are diagnostic checks, not a reason to replace parts automatically. If the cooler is incompatible or incorrectly installed, address that specific issue; a CPU cooler must fit the processor’s socket and thermal needs and clear the case. Thermal paste is an installation consumable, not a universal remedy for stuttering or high readings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the observable basics: verify that the fans you expect to be running are operating and that their airflow is not blocked. Then check whether the CPU cooler is the correct thermal solution for the processor and whether it was mounted correctly. If a specific compatibility or installation issue is identified, choose a remedy that addresses it; do not purchase a cooler or thermal paste solely because the system feels warm during a game.

A replacement case fan is a conditional option, not a generic upgrade recommendation. Only consider one after confirming a fan or airflow problem, and check the case’s supported fan size, connector, and installation needs. A CPU air cooler likewise depends on the processor’s socket and thermal needs as well as case clearance. If those details are unknown, identify them before shopping.

If it is a new prebuilt or OEM PC

Contact the PC manufacturer first when a new prebuilt system shows actual overheating symptoms, especially if it may still be under warranty. Intel’s overheating guidance recommends contacting the PC manufacturer for OEM systems. Do not make opening a sealed system, replacing its cooler, or repasting the routine first step; those actions may complicate support, and the correct service path depends on the system and its warranty terms.

When contacting support, describe the repeatable symptom and the evidence you observed: which games are affected, whether performance drops as heat rises, whether the system shuts down, and whether the issue followed a change. Include the PC model and relevant component details if known. That is more useful than reporting a temperature in isolation, especially because there is no single normal temperature applicable to every system.

Buy a fan only after confirming an airflow problem

A case fan may be relevant if you have confirmed a fan or airflow issue in a DIY build. Before choosing one, match the case’s supported fan size, connector, and installation requirements. A fan purchase cannot be recommended from high temperature alone, and it is not the right first response to unexplained stuttering on a new OEM PC.

Cooling parts solve identified cooling problems; they are not a substitute for finding out whether the game is using the intended GPU, whether background activity coincides with the hitch, or whether performance actually tracks thermal symptoms. If there is no evidence of a fan, airflow, compatibility, or mounting issue, pause before buying hardware.

Use a short retest plan

  1. Record a baseline: note the game, resolution, graphics preset, display mode, FPS or frame-time behavior, temperatures, and whether the issue occurs in one or several games.
  2. Observe the system under load: use Task Manager to check CPU, GPU, memory, and disk activity during the symptom. Note processes or resource changes that coincide with it.
  3. Check the GPU assignment: if the PC has multiple GPUs, set the game’s Windows 11 graphics preference to High performance where appropriate, then restart the game.
  4. Check updates and background load: install relevant Windows updates, review optional driver updates, use the GPU maker’s official channel for relevant graphics-driver changes, and close unneeded apps.
  5. Test only relevant display or power settings: try Windows 11 windowed-game optimizations only for compatible DirectX 10/11 games in windowed or borderless mode. Consider Best performance mode with its power and warmth trade-off.
  6. Retest the same conditions: compare the result with your baseline. If performance loss tracks thermal symptoms, follow the DIY or OEM cooling path; if not, return to the software, settings, and resource evidence.

Keep notes as you go so you do not lose track of what changed. If an adjustment has no clear effect, record that and move to the next relevant check instead of stacking multiple untested changes. If the issue is limited to one title, continue to compare its configuration and display mode with a game that behaves normally. If multiple games show the same pattern, give shared Windows, driver, resource, power, and GPU-selection checks higher priority.

When to stop troubleshooting yourself

Seek help from the PC manufacturer or an authorized service channel if a new prebuilt system repeatedly shuts down, shows sustained performance loss with signs of thermal throttling, or needs internal inspection while under warranty. For a self-built PC, stop before buying replacement cooling parts unless you have identified a compatibility, mounting, fan, or airflow problem. If symptoms remain after the basic checks, the exact PC model, CPU and GPU, game, Windows version, observed temperatures, and warranty terms are needed to narrow the diagnosis; generic guidance cannot establish a safe temperature limit or identify a defective component for an unspecified machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal percentage of FPS improvement or single temperature threshold that can be promised for an unspecified PC. The useful outcome of troubleshooting is a better-supported explanation: a setting or background process that coincides with the issue, evidence that the game was assigned to the wrong GPU, or thermal symptoms that warrant cooling checks or manufacturer service. If you have none of those signs yet, keep gathering repeatable evidence rather than buying parts or treating one reading as conclusive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my new gaming PC stuttering?

Stuttering can have several causes, including game settings, background resource use, software or driver issues, GPU assignment, and memory pressure. Check Task Manager while the hitch happens, note whether one game or several are affected, and compare the same scene after one relevant change at a time. A busy resource is a clue, not proof of a defective component.

How do I fix low FPS on a new PC?

First record the game, resolution, preset, display mode, and whether the problem is game-specific. Check CPU, GPU, memory, and disk activity while playing; close apps you recognize and do not need; install relevant Windows updates; and use the GPU maker’s official driver channel if a graphics-driver change is appropriate. On a multi-GPU Windows 11 PC, you can assign the game to High performance in Settings > System > Display > Graphics, then restart it.

Is my gaming PC overheating if the CPU temperature rises while I play?

Not necessarily. Intel notes that workload, cooling, chassis design, and fan control affect processor temperature, and that higher temperatures during gameplay can be normal. Look for corroborating evidence such as sustained performance loss with reduced processor frequency, repeated shutdowns, or performance that consistently declines as heat rises. Use the exact processor and PC maker’s specifications rather than a universal temperature number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy a new fan or CPU cooler for a new gaming PC?

Only after confirming a fan, airflow, cooler-compatibility, or mounting problem. A DIY builder should check that fans work and are unobstructed and that the cooler suits the processor and fits the case. For an overheating prebuilt or OEM PC, contact the manufacturer first, particularly if it may still be under warranty.

Does Windows 11 Optimizations for windowed games fix every stutter?

No. Microsoft says the feature applies to compatible DirectX 10 and 11 games running windowed or borderless. It can use a newer flip-model presentation path, potentially reducing frame latency and enabling supported features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate, but it is not a universal fix and does not apply to every game or fullscreen configuration.

Should I switch Windows power mode to Best performance?

You can test it on Windows 11 devices that offer the setting, but it is not a guaranteed stutter cure. Microsoft cautions that Best performance can increase power consumption and warmth. Compare the same game conditions and consider that trade-off; warmth alone does not prove thermal throttling.

The Bottom Line

Diagnose before you buy: reproduce the symptom, check resource use and GPU assignment, and update software carefully. Treat heat as a fault when it is accompanied by evidence such as throttling, sustained performance loss, or repeated shutdowns—not simply because a gaming temperature rises. For a new prebuilt PC with genuine overheating symptoms, contact the manufacturer; for a DIY build, verify the cooler and fans before choosing parts.
