That leaves three legitimate possibilities: install it from an existing Steam library, redeem a valid unused key, or play a used PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 copy on its original console. Avoid cracked downloads, torrents, repacks and “preactivated” installers—they are unauthorized and can expose you to malware, account theft and broken files.

Which game is Mortal Kombat 9?
Mortal Kombat 9 is the common fan name for Mortal Kombat (2011), the ninth mainline game in the series. Its official PC release is titled Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition.
The Komplete Edition contains the base game and the downloadable character and content additions associated with the release. Searching Steam for “MK9” may therefore produce no useful result; search for the full title instead.

The official Steam app is identified as app 237110. That support record does not mean the game is currently available to buy.
Can you still buy MK9 on Steam?
Not through a normal Steam store purchase. Steam still retains a support record for Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition, but SteamDB currently lists the game as retired and unavailable for sale.
This distinction matters:
- Existing owners: may still be able to download the game from their Steam Library.
- Unused Steam keys: may still activate if genuine, unused and compatible with your region.
- New customers: should not expect a current official Steam purchase button.
The game was removed at the publisher’s request. The precise legal or licensing reason has not been publicly confirmed in the sources available for this article. Community discussions often connect the removal with guest-character licensing, including Freddy Krueger, but that explanation should be treated as speculation rather than established fact.
How to install Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition if you already own it
- Install the official Steam client.
- Sign in to the account that originally purchased or redeemed the game.
- Open Library.
- Search for Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition, not only “Mortal Kombat 9.”
- Select the game and choose Install.
- After Steam finishes downloading it, launch it from your Library.
A retired store listing can disappear from search results while remaining available to people who already own a license. Do not buy another copy simply because the public store page no longer displays a purchase option.
If the game is missing from your Library
- Check that you are using the correct Steam account.
- Search the complete official title.
- Check hidden games and your Steam account or license history.
- Confirm that your old purchase was not a different title, such as Mortal Kombat X or Mortal Kombat 11.
- Restart Steam and sign in again.
- Contact Steam Support if the license should be attached to the account.
Can you buy an unused Steam key?
Potentially, but this is a risky resale route rather than a normal official purchase. A key may still work if it is genuine, unused, intended for Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition and valid in your region. None of those conditions is guaranteed by a marketplace listing.
Before paying, check all of the following:
- The product is specifically Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition for Steam.
- It is not a soundtrack, downloadable-content item or a different Mortal Kombat game.
- The activation region is clearly stated.
- The seller explains what happens if the key is already redeemed or invalid.
- The payment method offers meaningful dispute protection.
- The seller is providing a key—not a shared or borrowed account.
SteamDB’s package information shows historic package and key-related data, but it is not a retailer and does not guarantee that any key is currently available or redeemable.

Never give your Steam password or one-time login code to a seller. Avoid listings promising “offline activation,” remote installation or access to a shared account. If a key activates but the game does not appear, retain your receipt and contact the seller or Steam Support rather than downloading an unofficial replacement.

What about free downloads, torrents and repacks?
Unauthorized downloads are not a legitimate way to obtain the PC version. Cracked executables and repacked installers can contain malware, hidden cryptocurrency miners, password stealers or modified files. They may also fail to install, corrupt saves, disable features or trigger account-security problems.
Do not download a supposed “official installer” from an unrelated website. No official standalone Warner Bros. download method for MK9 was identified in the available support material. Current WB Games Support and Mortal Kombat Games Support resources do not present a current retail Windows download for this game.
Can a PS3 or Xbox 360 copy work on PC?
No. A PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 disc is not a Windows installer and does not create a PC Steam license.
A used console copy is still a legitimate option if your priority is playing the 2011 game rather than playing it specifically on Windows. You would need the relevant console and compatible hardware.

Will the old PC version run on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
The game’s official Steam requirements were written for the Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 era. They are not a guarantee of compatibility with Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Steam’s listing also states that Windows XP and DirectX 9.0c or earlier are unsupported. Modern hardware may be powerful enough, yet the game can still encounter problems such as missing legacy DirectX components, black screens, controller-detection failures, startup crashes, cutscene issues or conflicts with overlays.

- Use Steam’s file-verification option after installation.
- Update your graphics drivers.
- Try windowed or borderless display mode and a different resolution.
- Disable Steam and third-party overlays.
- Test keyboard and controller input separately.
- Disconnect unnecessary controllers and input devices.
- Try Windows compatibility settings cautiously, only after simpler steps.
- Check whether security software quarantined a game file.
Do not download random DLL files from third-party websites. If installation still fails, use Steam Support or the relevant WB Games support channel.

The Steam record lists online-related features such as Steam Cloud, leaderboards and Remote Play Together, but that does not establish that every original online matchmaking service remains operational in 2026.
Expect single-player and local play to be the safer reasons to obtain the game. If online multiplayer is your main priority, check current in-game behavior and recent community reports before paying a premium for a resale key.

Modern Mortal Kombat alternatives on PC
If you mainly want a Mortal Kombat game on Windows rather than this exact 2011 release, these officially sold alternatives are easier to obtain.

Mortal Kombat 11
Mortal Kombat 11 on Steam offers a modern PC release with a substantial story mode, online PvP and contemporary presentation. Its listed minimum requirements include 8 GB of RAM, DirectX 11 and graphics hardware around the GeForce GTX 670/GTX 1050 or Radeon HD 7950/R9 270 class.
It is the more approachable fallback for many older gaming PCs, but it is not a substitute for MK9’s story, roster, mechanics or visual style.
Mortal Kombat 1
Mortal Kombat 1 on Steam is the newer PC release and has substantially higher requirements: Windows 10 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, DirectX 12, approximately 140 GB of storage, and a GPU around the GeForce GTX 1660, Radeon RX 590 or Intel Arc A750 class.
Choose it for the newest presentation and gameplay systems, not because it recreates MK9. It is a poor fit for a low-end PC or a reader specifically seeking the 2011 game.
