To enable the feature, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, turn on Optimizations for windowed games under the default system-wide graphics settings, then restart your game.
Microsoft says the setting is designed for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in Windowed or Borderless windowed mode. It can reduce frame-presentation latency and improve access to features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate (VRR), but it is not a guaranteed FPS boost.
Once gaming optimizations are enabled, Outbyte PC Repair can scan Windows settings and system issues that may affect windowed play.

What “Optimizations for windowed games” does
Some Windows games traditionally presented frames through an older blt-model path. Windows 11 can move compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games to the newer flip-model presentation path when they run in Windowed or Borderless windowed mode.
Flip-model presentation can reduce the delay between the game producing a frame and Windows displaying it. It also integrates more effectively with modern display features, including Auto HDR and VRR when the game, monitor, GPU, driver, and connection support them.

The setting does not overclock your graphics card, lower in-game quality settings, or guarantee higher frames per second. Microsoft’s explanation focuses primarily on presentation latency and display-feature support. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance and its DirectX explanation.
How to enable it for all compatible games
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose System, then Display.
- Select Graphics.
- Under Default settings, or the equivalent system-wide graphics settings section on a redesigned Windows 11 build, switch on Optimizations for windowed games.
- Close Settings and restart the game.
Restarting is important. Changing the toggle while the game is running may not change the presentation path for that session.

Use a per-game override if the global setting works well in most titles but causes problems in one of them.
- Go to Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Find the game under Custom options for apps.
- Select the game and choose Options.
- Turn Optimizations for windowed games on or off for that title.
- Select Save, then restart the game.
If the game is not listed, select Add a desktop app, choose Browse, and add the game’s actual executable file. Avoid selecting a launcher, updater, crash reporter, or anti-cheat helper unless that is the executable you specifically need to configure. If a game uses multiple executables, identify the one that remains active during gameplay.

Per-application settings take precedence over the global preference. Microsoft documents the redesigned Graphics settings page and its overrides here.
Which games and display modes are covered?

API support alone does not guarantee a visible improvement. A game may already use an efficient presentation model, or its performance may be limited by rendering workload rather than presentation latency.

Should you turn it on?
It is reasonable to leave the setting enabled if you regularly play compatible DX10/DX11 games in Borderless windowed mode and they remain smooth and responsive. Borderless mode is particularly useful for fast Alt-Tab switching, overlays, streaming, recording, and multi-monitor setups.
Try it when you want Auto HDR or VRR support in an eligible game. Disable it for an individual title if you see worse frame pacing, hitching, flicker, incorrect HDR, tearing, overlay problems, or reduced responsiveness. Competitive players should compare both configurations rather than assuming that the global setting is automatically best.

Auto HDR and the setting
Auto HDR is a separate visual feature that changes how supported games are presented on an HDR-capable display. It is not an FPS or latency mode.
Windows 11 automatically enables Optimizations for windowed games when Auto HDR is enabled. If Windows will not let you disable the optimization globally, turn off Auto HDR first. You can also use the per-game graphics options to disable the windowed optimization or choose Don’t use Auto HDR for a particular title. Microsoft lists the HDR requirements and controls in its HDR settings guide.
VRR, V-Sync, and tearing
VRR synchronizes the monitor’s refresh behavior with frame delivery, but it requires a compatible monitor, GPU, connection, driver, and configuration. The Windows setting cannot create VRR support where the hardware does not provide it.
Lower-latency presentation can expose tearing when a game renders above the monitor’s refresh rate. If tearing appears:

- Enable the game’s V-Sync and compare the result.
- Use a sensible frame-rate limit at or below the display’s refresh rate.
- Enable VRR on the monitor and in the relevant graphics settings if supported.
- Temporarily disable overlays or capture tools to check for conflicts.
- Disable the optimization for that game only and restart it.
There is no universal FPS-cap value required by Windows for this feature. V-Sync can prevent tearing but may add latency depending on the game and synchronization path; VRR can improve the compromise but may still have limits at the top of its range.
Check your monitor’s refresh rate
If Windows is using 60 Hz when your monitor supports 120 Hz, 144 Hz, or another higher rate, this setting will not correct the configuration.

The available rates depend on the monitor, connection, resolution, and other hardware. Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) is a separate Windows feature with its own requirements; it is not the same as VRR. The toggle is missing
- Confirm that you are running Windows 11.
- Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, rather than relying on an older executable Compatibility tab.
- Check the redesigned Graphics settings layout for the system-wide default settings section.
- Install available Windows updates and current graphics drivers from your PC, laptop, or GPU manufacturer.
If the option still does not appear, treat the feature as unavailable on that installation. Registry edits and third-party “game optimizer” utilities are not necessary to enable it.

Enabling it changes nothing
Check whether the game is actually running in Windowed or Borderless windowed mode, whether it uses DX10 or DX11, and whether you restarted it. The game may already use flip-model presentation, may be running in DX12, Vulkan, or OpenGL, or may not be limited by presentation latency. Without HDR or VRR-capable hardware, those related benefits will not appear either.
The game tears or stutters
First test V-Sync, a suitable frame-rate limit, VRR, and temporarily disabled overlays. If the problem persists, use the per-game override to turn off Optimizations for windowed games, save it, and restart the title.
Do not confuse it with Fullscreen Optimizations
Optimizations for windowed games is a Graphics settings feature for eligible DX10/DX11 games in Windowed or Borderless windowed mode. Disable fullscreen optimizations is a separate executable compatibility option associated with Windows’ handling of games that appear to run in fullscreen.
Microsoft describes Fullscreen Optimizations as a separate mechanism that can make a game appear to use exclusive fullscreen while Windows handles it through an optimized borderless-style path. Exclusive fullscreen may still work better for a particular game, but it is not automatically faster on every modern Windows system. Bottom line
Enable Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Optimizations for windowed games, restart the game, and test it in Windowed or Borderless windowed mode. Keep it enabled when the game is smooth and responsive; if it introduces tearing, stutter, HDR issues, or other regressions, disable it for that game rather than changing the global setting or installing a paid optimizer.
