How to Get Out of a Car Safely If the Doors Won’t Open depends first on the danger: a stuck door on dry land is not the same emergency as a fire, a car entering still water, or a vehicle trapped in fast-moving floodwater. If there is no immediate threat, try other exits and controls and check your vehicle’s manual release instructions. If there is immediate danger, use a working exit if possible and contact emergency services as soon as circumstances allow.
On dry land, try other exits and controls first
If the car is stable and there is no fire, smoke, or immediate external danger, avoid forcing a jammed door. Check whether another door opens, then try the interior lock and handle and any working window controls. A crash may have damaged or jammed one door without disabling every exit.

- Try another door, including a rear door, if it is safe to reach.
- Check that the door is unlocked and try its interior handle again.
- Try a functioning window control as an alternative exit.
- If you are injured, pinned, or cannot exit safely, call emergency services when circumstances permit. Give your location and explain the hazard; follow the dispatcher’s instructions rather than attempting a forceful extraction that could worsen an injury.
Find the vehicle-specific manual door release
Some electric vehicles have a manual door release for use when the powered mechanism fails, but its location and operation vary by model. The U.S. Fire Administration says a release may be near the handle, in a door pocket, under a cover, below the window switch, near the floor, or behind an interior trim panel. Do not assume one vehicle’s instructions apply to another.

Check your owner’s manual for the emergency or manual release procedure for each relevant door. USFA’s guide, “Know How to Open Electric Vehicle Doors During a Crash or Loss of Power”, also explains why occupants should learn their own vehicle’s release locations before an emergency.

If fire, smoke, or another immediate threat makes staying inside dangerous
Leave by a functioning door or window if you can, then move away from the vehicle. If a door will not open and a side window is the only urgent exit, a vehicle escape tool may help—but only if it can break that window’s glass and you can reach and use the tool. Call your local emergency number as soon as circumstances allow. AAA advises attempting escape before calling 911 when a vehicle has hit water or is on fire; 911 is the U.S. emergency number.
Check the glass before relying on an escape tool
Car windows may use tempered or laminated glass, and the type can differ from one window position to another. In AAA’s 2019 testing, most of the tested vehicle escape tools broke tempered side windows, but none penetrated laminated glass. That finding applies to the tools and windows AAA tested; it does not guarantee that a particular tool will break a particular window.

Check the markings on each window you might need to use, or ask the vehicle manufacturer about the glass configuration. Do not assume the front side windows, rear side windows, and windshield are made of the same material. AAA’s article, “AAA: Vehicle Escape Tools are a Lifesaver – in the Right Situation”, details the test and its limitations. A car window breaker and seat-belt cutter is preparedness equipment, not a guaranteed way out.
Water changes the escape advice
Fast-moving floodwater
For a vehicle trapped in rapidly moving floodwater, Ready.gov’s advice is to stay inside the vehicle. If water rises inside, seek refuge on the roof. Do not try to walk or swim through fast-moving water. This instruction is specific to rapidly moving floodwater; it is not a general plan for every vehicle entering water.

See Ready.gov’s flood guidance for the official instructions.
A vehicle submerged in still water
Do not treat a glass-breaker recommendation as a complete submerged-car escape plan. AAA warns that a hammer-style escape tool may be ineffective underwater. Its advice distinguishes tool types, but it does not establish a universal escape sequence for every submerged vehicle, so do not rely on a tool alone or assume it will work in those conditions.

Prepare before you need to get out
- Read the owner’s manual and learn how each door opens manually if the powered system fails.
- Identify which windows could serve as exits and check their glass markings or confirm the configuration with the manufacturer.
- If you keep an escape tool, make sure it is reachable while you are seated and restrained, and understand its limits with laminated glass and underwater use.
- Use guidance for the hazard you are actually facing: ordinary vehicle failure, fire, still water, and rapidly moving floodwater call for different decisions.
