You usually can’t connect an ordinary Bluetooth speaker directly to a PS5 and rely on it to play game audio. The most practical route is to send the PS5’s HDMI audio through a TV that supports Bluetooth audio output. If your TV lacks that feature but has optical audio out, use a compatible Bluetooth transmitter. An HDMI audio extractor is a conditional option when the display has no suitable audio output.
Why direct Bluetooth pairing may not work
The PS5 does not provide dependable, general-purpose support for sending game audio directly to ordinary Bluetooth speakers. PlayStation Support’s PS5 error page states: “Your Bluetooth audio device isn’t compatible with PlayStation®5 consoles.” PlayStation’s 2020 “PS5: The Ultimate FAQ” also said that third-party wireless headsets using Bluetooth were not supported. The error page is the clearest general warning: a speaker that pairs with a phone may still fail as a direct PS5 audio device.

This does not mean Bluetooth speakers can never play PS5 sound. It means the Bluetooth connection will usually need to be made downstream of the console, through a compatible TV or a separate audio transmitter. The connection path matters:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Direct: PS5 to Bluetooth speaker. This is not a dependable route for ordinary Bluetooth speakers.
- Through the TV: PS5 to TV over HDMI, then TV to speaker over Bluetooth. This works only if the TV supports Bluetooth audio output.
- Through a transmitter: PS5 to TV over HDMI, then TV’s optical audio output to a Bluetooth transmitter, then transmitter to speaker.
- Through an extractor: PS5 to HDMI audio extractor, then an audio output from the extractor to a compatible Bluetooth transmitter and speaker. This is a more conditional setup.
PlayStation’s official guidance does not validate arbitrary USB Bluetooth dongles as a way to send PS5 audio to speakers. Don’t assume a USB adapter will solve the problem unless its maker specifically confirms the intended PS5 audio use and you can verify the required output and pairing behavior.

Choose the route that fits your TV and speaker
Before buying anything, check the TV’s manual and inspect its audio connections. A TV that has Bluetooth may support Bluetooth input for accessories without being able to transmit TV sound to a speaker. Look specifically for Bluetooth audio output or a setting to pair an audio device. If the TV cannot send sound over Bluetooth, see whether it has an optical digital audio output.
| Route | What you need | When to choose it | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| TV Bluetooth audio output | A TV that can transmit its audio to Bluetooth speakers | The TV offers Bluetooth audio output and can pair with your speaker. | That the feature is audio output, not just Bluetooth input; whether the TV’s own speakers can remain active; and whether the speaker pairs successfully. |
| TV optical output and Bluetooth transmitter | A TV optical digital audio output, an optical-input Bluetooth transmitter, an optical cable, USB power for the transmitter, and a compatible Bluetooth speaker | The TV cannot transmit audio over Bluetooth but has optical audio out. | That the transmitter accepts optical input, the TV provides a compatible audio format, the transmitter pairs with the speaker, and power is available. |
| HDMI audio extractor and transmitter | An HDMI extractor with an audio output, plus a compatible Bluetooth transmitter if the extractor does not transmit Bluetooth itself | The display has no suitable audio output and the extractor fits the console’s video setup. | Resolution, refresh rate, HDR and other needed HDMI features; the extractor’s audio connector and format; and compatibility between its output and the transmitter. |
No route guarantees a particular Bluetooth speaker, TV, transmitter or extractor combination will work. Bluetooth audio can also introduce a delay between the picture and sound. The official setup information cited here does not establish a latency figure or guarantee synchronization during gameplay.
Option 1: Send TV audio to the speaker over Bluetooth
This is usually the simplest setup when supported. Connect the PS5 to the TV as usual with HDMI, then use the TV’s own menus to pair the speaker and select it as the audio output. Menu names differ by TV; check the manual for instructions on Bluetooth audio output rather than looking only for a general Bluetooth setting.

- Connect the PS5 to the TV over HDMI and turn on both devices.
- On the TV, open its sound or audio-output settings and confirm that Bluetooth audio output is supported.
- Put the speaker into pairing mode and follow the TV’s pairing instructions.
- Select the speaker as the TV’s audio output. If the TV offers a choice between its built-in speakers and the Bluetooth device, choose the behavior you want.
- Start a game or another PS5 audio source and check that sound reaches the speaker.
The PS5 sends its audio to the TV through HDMI; the TV, not the console, makes the Bluetooth connection. Sony’s TV guidance notes that support and output behavior vary by TV model and connection type. In particular, check whether your TV can keep its built-in speakers active while sending sound to Bluetooth. If the speaker does not appear as an output option, or the TV does not offer Bluetooth audio output, use a different route rather than repeatedly trying to pair it with the PS5.
Option 2: Connect a Bluetooth transmitter to the TV’s optical output
If your TV has optical digital audio out but does not support Bluetooth audio output, an optical Bluetooth transmitter can bridge the connection. Sony documents this arrangement with its WLA-NS7 transmitter: the TV’s optical output feeds the transmitter, the transmitter receives USB power, and the Bluetooth device is paired with it. That is a documented example, not a promise that every transmitter works with every TV or speaker.
Check compatibility before buying
- TV output: Confirm that the TV has an optical digital audio output. A port labeled “Optical,” “Digital Audio Out” or similar may be present, but check the manual to confirm its purpose.
- Transmitter input: Confirm that the transmitter accepts optical digital audio input. A transmitter with only an analog input will not connect to an optical output without an additional converter.
- Speaker pairing: Confirm that the transmitter supports Bluetooth pairing with the type of speaker you intend to use. The TV pairs with the transmitter’s optical connection; the transmitter pairs with the speaker.
- Power: Check how the transmitter is powered. Sony’s WLA-NS7 guide specifies USB power and says to use a commercially available USB AC adapter if the TV has no USB power output.
- Audio format: Confirm that the TV and transmitter can use a compatible audio format. Sony’s guidance for its described optical-transmitter setup instructs users to set the TV’s digital audio output to PCM. Other devices may have different requirements, so follow their manuals.
Connect and pair the equipment
- Leave the PS5 connected to the TV by HDMI.
- Connect an optical cable from the TV’s optical digital audio output to the transmitter’s optical digital audio input, labeled DIGITAL IN in Sony’s WLA-NS7 guide.
- Connect USB power to the transmitter. If the TV does not provide USB power, use a suitable USB AC adapter as directed by the transmitter’s instructions.
- Open the TV’s digital audio-output settings. For Sony’s documented setup, set digital audio output to PCM; follow the specific guidance for your TV and transmitter if it differs.
- Put the transmitter and Bluetooth speaker into pairing mode, then complete pairing according to their instructions.
- Play PS5 audio and confirm that the TV is sending it through optical out and the speaker is receiving it.
The optical cable carries audio from the TV to the transmitter; the transmitter creates the Bluetooth link to the speaker. If the transmitter pairs but there is no sound, check the TV’s selected audio output and format, then confirm the optical cable is seated at both ends and the transmitter is receiving power.

Option 3: Use an HDMI audio extractor only if the display has no suitable output
An HDMI audio extractor can separate audio from an HDMI connection and provide an additional audio output. It may help when a TV or monitor lacks an audio output that can feed a transmitter. The extractor does not necessarily provide Bluetooth itself; depending on its connectors, you may still need a separate Bluetooth transmitter between the extractor and speaker.
Extractor configurations are not universal. A manufacturer support page describes an HDMI ARC extractor in certain AV receiver and transmitter setups, but that does not establish that every extractor works with every PS5, display or Bluetooth transmitter. Treat this as a compatibility-dependent workaround, not a guaranteed PS5 feature.
Verify the video and audio path
- Check that the extractor supports the PS5 video settings you need, including resolution, refresh rate, HDR and any other relevant HDMI features.
- Check that its audio output is the connector your transmitter accepts. For example, an optical-only transmitter needs an optical output; it cannot use an extractor’s analog output without an appropriate additional device.
- Confirm that the extractor passes video to the display while providing the intended audio output.
- Check the audio-format requirements for the extractor and transmitter, including whether the TV or console must send PCM.
- Confirm the complete chain—not just the extractor—can be connected and powered as intended.
There is no single extractor model established here as appropriate for every setup. If the display has optical out, the direct TV-to-transmitter route is simpler and avoids adding another HDMI device to the video path.

Set the PS5 audio output for the connected path
PlayStation’s audio settings are under Settings > Sound > Audio Output. The available options depend on the connected devices and configuration. You can select an output device and configure the HDMI device type; PlayStation gives AV amplifier channel and speaker-position settings as examples.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Choose the output device that matches the connection actually in use, such as the HDMI-connected TV or audio device.
- If the HDMI device type is relevant to your setup, select the appropriate option and configure available channel or speaker-position settings.
- Use the TV’s menus to select Bluetooth output or adjust optical digital audio output. If you are using a transmitter, use its pairing controls to connect the speaker.
These PS5 settings configure the console’s audio path; they do not add direct Bluetooth-speaker compatibility. For a TV-based route, the Bluetooth selection happens on the TV. For an optical-transmitter route, pairing happens between the speaker and transmitter.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Troubleshoot the connection by where it fails
The speaker will not pair directly with the PS5
That failure is consistent with PlayStation’s published incompatibility warning for Bluetooth audio devices. Don’t treat repeated direct pairing attempts as proof the speaker is defective. Check whether the TV can transmit audio over Bluetooth; otherwise, use an optical Bluetooth transmitter if the TV has optical audio out.

The TV sees the speaker, but PS5 sound still comes from the TV
Confirm the TV has selected the Bluetooth speaker as its audio output, not merely saved it as a paired device. Check the TV’s audio settings while PS5 audio is playing. Some TVs distinguish pairing from selecting an output, and available behavior differs by model.
The TV has Bluetooth but offers no speaker output
Bluetooth capability alone does not establish that the TV can transmit its audio to speakers. Check the TV manual for Bluetooth audio output support. If the TV does not provide it, look for optical digital audio out and use a compatible transmitter if available.
The optical transmitter pairs, but there is no sound
- Confirm the optical cable runs from the TV’s output to the transmitter’s optical input.
- Check that the TV is outputting audio over optical and that its selected digital format is supported by the transmitter. Sony’s guidance for its documented setup specifies PCM.
- Confirm the transmitter is powered and the speaker is paired to the transmitter, not waiting for the TV or PS5.
- Check the PS5’s output-device selection under Settings > Sound > Audio Output and verify the TV is receiving HDMI audio.
An HDMI extractor gives sound but disrupts the picture
Recheck the extractor’s support for the resolution, refresh rate, HDR and other video features you use. The audio output working does not prove that the extractor can pass through your full video setup. If the display has a suitable audio output, bypassing the extractor may simplify the chain.
Sound is delayed or out of sync
Bluetooth may add delay, but the official setup information here provides no measured latency figure and no guarantee of game-audio synchronization for arbitrary equipment. Check whether your TV or transmitter offers an audio-delay adjustment, and consult the manuals for any relevant settings. If the delay remains disruptive, a Bluetooth route may not meet your needs; the available evidence does not support promising a universal fix.
What to expect from the setup
The most reliable decision is based on the actual outputs and features of your devices: use TV Bluetooth audio output if the TV explicitly supports it; use an optical Bluetooth transmitter if the TV has optical out but cannot transmit audio over Bluetooth; consider an HDMI extractor only when neither route is available and its video and audio capabilities match your setup. Compatibility, audio format, pairing and possible delay all depend on the equipment in the chain.
