1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo clear fog in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl, get Defog from the Great Marsh in Pastoria City, earn the Pastoria Gym Badge, then select Defog in the Pokétch’s Hidden Moves app. You do not need to teach Defog to a Pokémon.
How to get Defog
- Go to Pastoria City and enter the Great Marsh.
- Speak to the green-haired NPC just inside the entrance to receive Defog, identified as TM97 in BDSP. The location is also confirmed by Nintendo Life’s Defog guide and Serebii’s BDSP Hidden Moves list.
How to clear the fog
- Earn the Pastoria Gym Badge. You must have it before using Defog outside battle.
- Open the Pokétch and choose the Hidden Moves app.
- Select Defog to clear the mist. The game calls on a wild Pokémon when needed, so you do not have to teach the move to a member of your party.
For certain hidden-move targets, the game also lets you press A while standing nearby. The official BDSP trainer guide describes this as an alternate way to use some hidden moves.

Where Defog helps
Route 210 is a common place to use Defog; the fog can make it harder to see and navigate. Defog is also listed for Mt. Coronet, Lost Tower, and Victory Road. It clears dense mist in fields and caves.
Why you may want to clear fog before a battle
Fog is more than a visibility problem: it causes a major drop in move accuracy during battles. The official guide does not give a numeric accuracy penalty, so there is no exact percentage to apply. Using Defog clears the field fog and removes that visibility obstacle.

How Defog works in the Switch remakes
Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl use the Pokétch’s Hidden Moves app rather than requiring you to teach a field move to a party Pokémon. The official guide explains that the remakes converted the old Hidden Machine system to Technical Machines, which break after one use, while field moves are accessed through the Pokétch. The appropriate Gym Badge is still required for use outside battle. These instructions apply to the Nintendo Switch remakes, not the original Nintendo DS games’ HM-item process.
