To get School Pips in Wizard101, your wizard needs Archmastery. Wizards level 50 and above automatically have some Archmastery; below level 50, you can get it from gear or an Archmastery jewel. Then choose the School Pip type in your deck, or click the Power Orb in battle to change the next pip.
What you need to get School Pips
Archmastery is the stat that fuels School Pips. Wizard101’s May 2024 update notes say that wizards at level 50 and above automatically have some Archmastery. A wizard below level 50 can gain it from gear; the notes also identify starter Archmastery jewels sold by Katherine Rockhammer in Wizard City.
At least one point of Archmastery from gear is enough to show the Archmastery combat display and participate in School Pip generation. An older community forum answer mentions a Cracked Archmastery Opal +1 as a lower-level option, but that item-specific advice dates from 2022; check current availability in game rather than relying on it.
How to set the School Pip you want
- Check your Archmastery. If you are level 50 or higher, you should have some automatically. If you are below 50, check your gear or seek an Archmastery jewel.
- Choose a School Pip in your deck. Each deck saves its own desired School Pip type. It defaults to your wizard’s school, so change it if you want a different type.
- Adjust it during combat if needed. Click the Power Orb to change the school of the next School Pip generated. This changes the next pip, not the deck’s saved choice.
The Power Orb fills as Archmastery generates power. When power is available, an available Power Pip can be converted into a School Pip, using one point from the orb. With enough stored power and Power Pips, you can generate more than one School Pip in a round.

Why School Pip generation speed varies
In ordinary PvE, Archmastery relative to your opponents affects how quickly the Power Orb fills: the highest rating generates power fastest. The Selenopolis update notes clarify that the comparison is against opponents, not teammates.
PvP and certain advanced combat situations can also factor in how full your main deck is. The official notes say a full main deck reaches maximum Power Orb efficiency in those situations; deck fullness does not affect ordinary PvE generation. The Selenopolis notes give illustrative rates: 50 rating corresponds to 2/3 power per round and 75 or 100 rating to 1 power per round for one player; for an opposing team, 25, 50, and 75 rating correspond to 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 per round. These are game-mechanics examples, not population statistics.

Check the spell’s exact pip cost
A School Pip works like a Power Pip for your wizard’s own school and also counts as a Power Pip for the school named on that pip. Some spells require a specific named School Pip as well as a number of generic pips. If a spell is still unavailable despite having enough total pips, inspect its card cost for a school-specific requirement.
If you have no Power Pips, the May 2024 notes describe another conversion: once the orb has three stored points and you have at least one white pip, a white pip can be converted into a Power Pip after School Pip conversion is complete.
