During Pokémon GO’s Galarian Expedition, the way to encounter shiny Galarian Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres was to use Daily Adventure Incense. The event ran October 4–11, 2024, and has ended; Niantic said the change to which Pokémon can appear through the incense would remain after the event. The announcement gave no numerical shiny odds, and an encounter was never a guaranteed catch.
How shiny Galarian bird encounters worked
Niantic announced that players could encounter shiny Galarian Articuno, shiny Galarian Zapdos, and shiny Galarian Moltres through Daily Adventure Incense during the event, “if you’re very lucky.” The official announcement does not provide a shiny rate or promise that using incense will produce a bird. - Use Daily Adventure Incense during its active period.
- Watch for a Galarian bird encounter; the incense gives a chance to encounter one, not a guaranteed bird or shiny.
- If a bird appears shiny, catch it manually and have Poké Balls ready.
Does a shiny Galarian bird run away or guarantee a catch?
Pokémon GO Hub reported that shiny Galarian birds would not flee, but said their catch rate remained uncertain. Leek Duck’s event guide also cautioned that a catch was not guaranteed. These are specialist reports, rather than behavior details in Niantic’s announcement. Pokémon GO Hub’s event report and Leek Duck’s event guide cover those catch details.
Pokémon GO Hub also advised against relying on a GO Plus automatic capture attempt: it follows the usual one-attempt behavior. Manual catching is the practical choice when a shiny bird appears.

When the event ran—and what continued afterward
The Galarian Expedition ran from Friday, October 4, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. until Friday, October 11, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. local time. That event window is over. Niantic said the change to the Pokémon that could appear through Daily Adventure Incense would continue permanently after the event, but its announcement does not document the full current incense pool or later mechanic changes.
Were paid event offers required?
No paid offer was identified as necessary to encounter shiny Galarian birds. Niantic’s event announcement associated the birds with Daily Adventure Incense, not the paid Masterwork Research reward list or the Zamazenta raid offer. The announcement listed historical prices of US$7.99 (or regional equivalent) for Masterwork Research and US$4.99 for an Ultra Raid Box; those were event-era offers, not current availability information.
