At night, serve the day’s catch at the sushi restaurant and use the proceeds to improve your diving gear. That exploration-to-restaurant-to-upgrade loop is the foundation of Dave the Diver.
How the day-and-night loop works
During the day, dive into the Blue Hole to catch fish, gather resources, and make progress on objectives. At night, the sushi restaurant turns your catch into income. Money and collected materials help you improve equipment for later dives; as the story advances, it also opens up additional activities and systems.

The Blue Hole’s terrain and ecology change, and new quests, characters, and dangers appear as you progress. Follow the main objectives to learn these systems in a manageable order rather than trying to master every activity on your first outings. Steam’s game listing describes the single-player adventure and its diving, fishing, and restaurant elements; MINTROCKET’s fact sheet also outlines the progression loop.
What to focus on during your first dives
Finish the tutorial and learn how to return
Use the tutorial to get comfortable with movement, the harpoon, and fast ascent before taking on ambitious dives. Your first priority is not the deepest possible route; it is learning how to collect useful items and return safely.

Give each dive one main purpose
Before descending, decide whether you are pursuing a quest objective, a particular catch, or materials needed for an upgrade. A focused plan makes it easier to choose what to carry and when to leave. The third-party Dave the Diver beginner guide likewise recommends purposeful dives rather than treating every pickup as worthwhile.
Keep oxygen for the trip back
Oxygen is your key limit underwater. If it runs out, Steam’s description says the fish and items you collected are left behind. Swimming quickly, taking damage, and diving beyond your suit’s depth can all increase oxygen loss, according to the beginner guide. Start your return before the tank is nearly empty, and use fast ascent when a fight becomes unsafe or the remaining oxygen is tight. The guide’s roughly 40% return point is a rule of thumb, not a game-mandated threshold; adjust to the depth, route, and conditions of your dive.

Choose catches and cargo deliberately
Fish are not all captured the same way, and the method can affect catch quality. The beginner guide says direct kills usually yield one-star fish, harpoon catches two-star fish, and live-capture tools such as the Steel Net Gun or Tranquilizer Gun can yield three-star fish. It also notes that higher-star catches provide more meat and a higher sale price for the same backpack weight. Treat this as a useful strategy rather than a guarantee for every species.
Make cargo space work for your plan. Prioritize quest items, materials that help with a useful weapon upgrade, and fish that support dishes the restaurant can serve. A full backpack is not automatically a valuable one: low-priority pickups can take space from items that better advance your goals.

Which early upgrades are worth prioritizing?
Think about upgrades by the problem they solve, not as a single mandatory build. The beginner guide recommends improving the Diving Suit and Oxygen Tank first for safer progression, then improving harpoon effectiveness and backpack capacity. Shift that order when a quest or your own limiting factor calls for something else.
| Upgrade or tool | What it helps with | Starter guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Diving Suit | Access to deeper areas and safer progression | Prioritize when depth or danger is limiting your dives. |
| Oxygen Tank | Time underwater and the ability to complete a return route | Prioritize if you are frequently cutting dives short or struggling to return. |
| Harpoon and capture tools | Combat and the method or quality of catches | Choose one useful tool to develop instead of spreading scarce materials across many options. |
| Backpack capacity | How much you can bring back in one dive | Improve when cargo space, rather than oxygen or depth, is limiting useful hauls. |
Weapon crates are a low-commitment way to try available options. The guide suggests the Old Harpoon Gun as a general-use choice, the Steel Net Gun for groups of fish, and the Tranquilizer Gun for sharks and other dangerous creatures. Those are starter suggestions, not the only workable choices; use a tool that fits your target and current objective.

Turn the catch into progress at the restaurant
At night, use the day’s catch for sushi service. Restaurant income helps pay for diving equipment, so the choices you make underwater feed directly into safer and more capable future dives. Later progression adds systems such as staff, farming, and fish farms; follow the objectives as they become available rather than worrying about optimizing them before you understand the basic loop.
Where can you play?
MINTROCKET’s fact sheet lists PC and Mac via Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PS4/PS5. The PlayStation product page highlights DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers on PS5 and says the game can be played without motion controls.
