In Slitterhead, possession is your main tool for both getting around and staying alive. Switch hosts to reposition, use Rarities for their distinctive weapons and blood-powered abilities, and take a moment in Possession Mode to decide what the fight needs next. Early on, prioritize survivability; later, make guarding and parrying part of your defense.
Use possession to move and fight
Hyoki has no physical form, so moving through Kowlong and engaging enemies means possessing human hosts. Think of a host as more than a body to fight in: switching can change your position, create an opening, or get you out of a dangerous situation. If a host is badly wounded, changing bodies can keep you in the encounter rather than committing to a doomed stand.

Ordinary civilians can also serve as temporary combat resources, according to Francisco Dominguez’s beginner guide for the Epic Games Store. Treat that as a tactical recommendation, not a guarantee that every switch will be safe or effective.
Make Possession Mode a decision point
When the fight gets crowded, use Possession Mode to take stock before choosing your next move. The Epic guide recommends surveying the encounter and warping to a host suited to the immediate situation. Rather than switching at random, ask what would help most right now:

- Need a new angle? Possess a host positioned to attack from another direction.
- Taking too much pressure? Choose a safer position instead of remaining with a fragile body.
- Need a specific effect? Move to a character whose ability fits the opening or problem.
Switching may also draw enemy attention or create an opening, so consider what enemies are doing as you choose. This tactical-pause approach is advice from the Epic guide, not a universal outcome in every encounter.
Use Rarities for their specialist roles
Rarities are distinctive hosts with their own fighting styles, weapons, and blood-powered abilities. William Yohei Hart, PR Manager at Bokeh Game Studio, described them this way in an Xbox Wire overview published September 26, 2024: “Each Rarity comes with distinct fighting styles, weapons, and blood-powered abilities.” Choose a Rarity for what its kit can contribute, rather than assuming every character fills the same role.
Match abilities to the situation
The Epic guide gives Anita’s Poison Needle as an example of a ranged option, and Julee’s Revive All as support for Edo’s aggressive approach. These pairings illustrate how one character’s ability can complement another’s style; they are not a definitive ranking of the roster.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build survivability early, then sharpen your defense
The Epic guide recommends prioritizing health upgrades and Hyper Deflection early. Those choices support staying in fights and dealing with groups of attacks, rather than relying entirely on offense to end an encounter first.

The guide notes that early enemies may be manageable with aggression and dodging, but guarding and parrying help preserve hosts and become more valuable at higher difficulties. Practice their timing before a difficult encounter; dodging alone is less dependable as your only defensive plan.
Use the practice and accessibility options available on your platform
PlayStation’s official product page lists adjustable difficulty, practice mode, tutorial reminders, control reminders, controller remapping, and visual and audio features. Options and descriptions may vary by platform or edition, so check the relevant store page and the game’s settings for what is currently available. PlayStation lists Slitterhead for PS4 and PS5.
If you are still learning the controls or timing, practice mode or a lower difficulty can give you room to understand possession, defense, and character abilities without treating every encounter as a test.
