To get started in Balatro, focus on clearing the current Blind with poker hands, then use discards and Joker choices to make that goal easier. Learn what your cards can reliably form before chasing elaborate combinations; each run changes as your picks and Jokers change.
How do you get started with Balatro on mobile?
Balatro blends poker hands with solitaire-style card play. Your immediate objective is to beat each Blind’s target by making poker hands; Boss Blinds are part of that progression. Jokers add effects that can reshape how a run scores, so the useful question is not simply “What is the strongest hand?” but “What hand can I make, and what do my current Jokers reward?” Apple’s U.S. App Store listing describes the core objective, while Google Play’s listing describes the mobile game and its changing runs.
- Look at the target. Check the Blind you need to clear before making a choice. Keep the immediate scoring goal in view.
- Read your cards and identify a plausible hand. Start with combinations you can form from the cards available, rather than holding out for a rare or complicated hand.
- Use discards to improve that plan. Decide what you are trying to draw toward, then discard with that goal in mind.
- Check Joker effects before changing course. Read what each Joker does and consider whether it supports the hand you are building.
- After a choice, notice what changed. Picks, discards, and Jokers can alter how a run develops; use each run to learn which decisions helped you meet its target.
This is a way to make early decisions easier to evaluate, not a guaranteed winning build. The official listings describe variable runs and Joker combinations, but do not prescribe a single beginner strategy.
How should a beginner choose Jokers?
Jokers change how a run plays and can combine in useful ways. Google Play lists more than 150 Jokers in its October 8, 2026 listing, but you do not need to memorize them before starting. Read the effect on each Joker you encounter and ask whether you can explain how it helps your current plan.

- Prefer effects whose impact you can connect to the hands you are making.
- Look for a small number of effects that work together instead of collecting options without a scoring plan.
- When a Joker encourages a different approach, compare that approach with the target of the Blind you are facing.
These are decision-making guidelines based on the game’s described Joker and Blind systems, not claims that a particular combination is optimal.
Should you play touch or use a controller?
Touch is the natural starting point on mobile: Google Play describes the controls as remastered for touch. Take time to get comfortable selecting and moving cards before worrying about speed. If you play on iPhone and prefer physical controls, Apple’s U.S. listing says Balatro supports compatible PlayStation, Xbox, or MFi controllers. A controller is optional, and the listing does not establish that it is faster or better than touch.

Which mode should you try first?
The Google Play listing names campaign and challenge modes. If your goal is to learn the main rhythm of play, begin with the standard run experience and get familiar with making hands, using discards, and considering Joker effects. Try challenges when you want a more defined variation. The listing identifies both modes but does not rank either as best for beginners.

Requirements and availability can vary by region, so check the store page for your country and device.
