IMVU’s Move from Virtual World to Social Service: A Success by 2013?

IMVU’s 100-million milestone measured registered accounts, not active users. Its 2012–2013 revenue and creator-economy claims point to historical traction, but not proof of current scale or causation.

By 2012–2013, IMVU had strong evidence of historical traction as it expanded from avatar chat into a broader social entertainment service: it reported more than 100 million registered accounts, revenue above $50 million a year, and a large creator-driven virtual-goods economy. That supports calling the transition a business success at the time—but the account total was not an active-user count, and the available figures do not prove the transition caused the growth or establish IMVU’s performance today.

What did IMVU mean by “more than 100 million users”?

The milestone was registered accounts, not 100 million people actively using IMVU. GamesBeat reported on August 20, 2012, that the company had crossed 100 million registered users. In an April 2013 company announcement, IMVU described more than 111 million registered accounts and separately said millions of unique users interacted with the service each month. Those are different measures: registrations accumulate over time, while monthly unique users describe activity during a period. Neither figure should be read as daily active users or concurrent users.

GamesBeat’s 2012 report also attributed annual revenue of $50 million and more than 10 million virtual goods to IMVU. These were company-reported figures in contemporaneous coverage, not audited results.

How did IMVU broaden beyond a virtual world?

From 3D rooms and avatar chat to social entertainment

IMVU’s early experience centered on users creating 3D rooms and chatting through avatars. The company added games and other social features, positioning the service as a place to meet people, play, express identity, and socialize rather than only visit a virtual space. The avatar remained central, but the product’s purpose widened around shared activities and digital self-expression.

A creator economy built into the service

Virtual goods were part of the strategy, not merely decoration. Members could make and sell clothing and other avatar items, giving the community a role in expanding the catalog. In its 2013 announcement, IMVU said nearly all catalog goods were created by customers. It reported more than 15 million products, over 500,000 creators, and more than 16,000 new products added daily. The company also said some creators earned over $100,000 annually from virtual-goods sales. These are historical company claims, not current catalog or earnings figures.

The same announcement said IMVU had an annual revenue rate above $55 million and operated profitably. The figure differs from the $50 million annual revenue reported in 2012; they are separate dated snapshots, not a single audited time series. Together, the account growth, reported revenue and profitability, and creator participation provide the clearest evidence of commercial traction in the period.

Extending access to mobile

In 2013, IMVU announced Android and iPad applications to extend the experience beyond desktop. This fit the broader service direction: users could socialize and play through avatars across more than one access point, while the virtual-goods economy and member-created content remained central.

Was the move a success?

For the narrow historical question, yes—with qualifications. By 2012–2013, IMVU had reached a substantial registered-account milestone, reported tens of millions of dollars in annual revenue, described profitable operations, and built a sizable community-created catalog. Those indicators support a conclusion of historical business traction as the service expanded its social and entertainment features.

They do not establish that the strategic shift itself caused the growth. The figures do not isolate the effect of games, mobile access, virtual goods, or other factors, and the available sources do not provide consistent engagement or retention measures. Registered accounts also cannot substitute for active-user data.

What can be said about IMVU now?

IMVU’s about page continues to describe avatar customization, virtual currency, socializing, and creativity. Its corporate profile lists web, desktop, iOS, and Android access, along with millions of users, more than 400,000 destinations, and a 60-million-item catalog. Because those profile figures are undated promotional claims, they cannot be compared reliably with the 2012–2013 milestones.

There is evidence of ongoing product activity, but not a current scale comparison. IMVU’s news archive includes age-verification updates and a 2026 IMVU-Blox announcement. Its 2024 anniversary campaign featured creator showcases, social events, virtual gifts, and credit promotions. These examples show continued development and community activity, not current active-user totals or financial results.

Accordingly, the evidence supports saying IMVU’s transition had achieved notable reach and commercial traction by 2013. It does not establish whether the service is a success by current active-use or revenue measures.
