Start in Solo if you want to learn without coordinating with a team; choose Duo or Squad when you want to play with others. How to play PUBG? Begin with Basic Training
PUBG is a battle royale: players or teams enter a match, gather gear, and fight to be the last survivor or surviving team. The playable area contracts as the Blue Zone closes in, so staying alive means making decisions about both opponents and when to move. You do not need to master every weapon, map, or tactic before your first match. Start by learning the controls and the order of the survival tasks.

The official PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS Update 42.2 notes describe refreshed Basic Training as taking about 10 minutes. It covers controls, surviving the Blue Zone, items, communication, reviving, and driving. That is a practical first stop: it introduces several actions you will need in real matches without requiring you to learn them all under pressure. The update also describes a Beginner Training system; use the training options shown in your game, since available onboarding details can change with updates.
- Open the training option from the game’s current lobby menus. Menu placement and labels can change, so follow the live in-game navigation rather than relying on a fixed path from an older guide.
- Complete Basic Training. Pay attention to movement and interaction prompts, then practice each action when the training asks you to perform it. The official estimate is about 10 minutes, not a guarantee that every player will finish in exactly that time.
- Repeat any control or movement exercise that felt unfamiliar. Your goal is to be able to move, change stance, aim, and respond to the training prompts without stopping to search for a key.
- Use Training Mode at Camp Jackal for extra practice. PUBG’s overview lists weapon, equipment, parachuting, and driving practice there. It is a place to become more familiar with those activities before expecting to use them smoothly in a live match.
- Start a regular match when you are ready to practice the full loop. Focus on one or two skills, such as landing safely and moving before the Blue Zone closes, rather than trying to optimize every choice at once.
Basic Training is the best introduction to the essentials, but it cannot make every real match predictable. Other players choose their own routes and engagements, and a good plan may need to change when the circle or a fight puts you in a different position.

Understand the survival loop before worrying about winning
A match repeatedly asks you to make four linked decisions: where to land, what to collect, when to move, and whether to fight. Each choice affects the next. A busy landing area may offer early encounters; a quieter drop may give you more time to gather gear, but you still have to keep track of the Blue Zone and reach the safe area.
1. Pick a landing place
When you leave the aircraft, choose a place you can reach and be prepared to change your plan if the descent takes you somewhere unexpected. A first-time player can treat landing as a navigation exercise rather than a contest to find the busiest fight. Learn how to steer, land, and orient yourself before trying to predict every opponent’s route.
2. Gear up
After landing, look for items and equipment that will let you respond to threats. Basic Training introduces items, while Camp Jackal offers equipment and weapon practice. In a live match, avoid spending so long searching that you lose track of the next safe-area move. The useful beginner habit is to keep checking your surroundings and the map while you collect what you find.

3. Watch the Blue Zone and move in time
The safe area changes as the Blue Zone shrinks. Keep an eye on the map and the match’s zone information, then begin moving before the boundary forces an emergency retreat. A route that looks straightforward can take time to travel, and stopping to loot or fight can put you behind. Treat movement as part of survival, not as something to think about only after the zone becomes dangerous.
4. Choose engagements deliberately
The objective is to outlast the remaining opponents, not to pursue every sound or fight. If you are still learning, prioritize understanding where you are, where the safe area is, and what cover or route is available. Taking a fight may improve your position or create a risk that costs time and health; the right decision depends on the situation, not on a rule to fight or avoid every opponent.
For an early match, give yourself a simple checklist: land, orient yourself, collect useful items, check the zone, and move before you are forced to. Repeating that sequence builds more transferable skill than trying to memorize a full map before you have played it.

Choose Solo, Duo, or Squad based on how you want to learn
PUBG’s official overview lists Solo, Duo, and Squad as the core team formats. Solo is one player alone, Duo pairs two players, and Squad supports a team of four. Choose according to whether you want to make decisions independently or learn while coordinating with other people.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Mode | Team size | Good fit when… | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo | One player | You want to learn movement, looting, map awareness, and fights at your own pace. | You make your own decisions and do not have teammates to coordinate with. |
| Duo | Two players | You have one partner and want to practice communication and moving together. | Agree on where to land and when to move; splitting up without a plan can make coordination harder. |
| Squad | Four players | You want to play as a larger team and practice communication with several teammates. | Keep the team’s position and movement in mind instead of making every choice alone. |
There is no universally best beginner queue. Solo removes the need to coordinate, which can make it easier to concentrate on your own controls and decisions. Playing Duo or Squad gives you teammates to communicate with, but adds the task of sharing information and staying together. Pick the format that makes you more likely to practice the skills you want to learn.
Training and live queues serve different purposes. Camp Jackal is listed for practicing weapons, equipment, parachuting, and driving; Solo, Duo, and Squad are the core match formats described in PUBG’s overview. Arcade can feature other formats, but those offerings can be temporary. For example, Update 42.2 listed Hot Drop and Solo Deathmatch with service windows in July and August 2026 that have ended. Do not assume a mode mentioned in an older update is still available; check the current Arcade menu.

Which PUBG maps can you play?
The official map directory names Erangel, Miramar, Sanhok, Karakin, Paramo, Taego, Deston, Vikendi, and Rondo. That directory is a catalog of maps, not a promise that every one is selectable in every region or queue at the same time. Map service changes, and availability can differ by region.
| Map | What the official map information establishes | How a beginner can use that information |
|---|---|---|
| Erangel | KRAFTON describes it as an 8×8 map with grasslands, mountains, cities, and towns. | Expect varied terrain and built-up areas; use your match’s map to orient yourself rather than assuming one route suits every landing. |
| Sanhok | KRAFTON describes it as a 4×4 map and says its smaller size leads to more fast-paced battles. | Be ready for encounters to develop quickly and keep checking your position as you move. |
| Miramar, Karakin, Paramo, Taego, Deston, Vikendi, and Rondo | These maps appear in PUBG’s official map directory. The cited directory information does not establish one permanent, universal queue lineup for them. | Check the current lobby or regional map-service information to see what is available to you. |
The size descriptions are useful context, not a promise about how any single match will unfold. A smaller map can mean faster-paced encounters, as PUBG says of Sanhok, while a larger map gives more ground to cover. Your landing point, the zone, and other players’ choices still determine where and when a particular match becomes dangerous.

In an August 11, 2026 developer letter, PUBG described a map-selection arrangement for NA, SA, EU, RU, and Console: after the initial service period, the number of map slots was reduced from five to three. The letter specified one fixed Erangel slot plus two rotating slots—one large 8×8 map and one small map—and said a detailed lineup would be shared in a future map-service report. This is information for the regions and service described in that dated letter, not a universal guarantee of what your lobby offers now.

Before you plan around a named map, check the map options in your lobby or the latest service report for your region and platform. If a map is absent, that does not mean it has been removed from the official map directory; it may simply not be in the current rotation for your queue or region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the basic game commands? PC keyboard and mouse controls
The following are PC keyboard-and-mouse examples from PUBG Support’s basic-commands guide. They describe documented defaults, not a required layout: PUBG lets players change keys under Settings > Control, and the support material is older, so confirm the current mapping in your own settings. Console inputs and PUBG Mobile touch controls are different and are not covered by this PC control list.
| Action | PC default in PUBG Support’s guide | Beginner note |
|---|---|---|
| Move | W, A, S, D | Use these directional keys to move; practice changing direction while keeping your view oriented with the mouse. |
| Crouch | C | Lowers your stance. |
| Prone | Z | Moves you into a prone position. |
| Jump or vault | Space | Used for jumping and vaulting. |
| Sprint | Shift | Used to sprint. |
| Walk | Ctrl | Used to walk. |
| Auto-run | = | Starts auto-run on the documented default layout. |
| Lean | Q and E | Lean left or right. |
| Change perspective | V | Toggles perspective. |
| Aim | Hold the right mouse button | Holding the button aims. |
| Toggle scope/ADS view | Tap the right mouse button | A tap toggles the scope/aim-down-sights view in the documented controls. |
| Cycle weapons | Mouse wheel or keys 1, 2, and 3 | These are the listed ways to cycle weapons on the documented default scheme. |
For aiming, note the distinction between holding and tapping the right mouse button: the support guide assigns them different actions. If your game behaves differently, the active control settings are more useful than memorizing a generic list. Key bindings can be changed in-game under Settings > Control; the exact visible menu labels can shift between versions.
Set up controls before a live match
- Open Settings and select Control. Find the current key-binding screen in your game; the documented path is Settings > Control.
- Check the actions you need first. Confirm movement, crouch, prone, jump/vault, sprint, aim, and weapon cycling. Those are the commands most directly tied to moving, responding, and practicing the core loop.
- Change only what you need. If a default is uncomfortable or conflicts with your normal input habits, rebind it to a key you can reach reliably. Avoid changing many bindings at once if you are still learning, because then it is harder to remember which action moved.
- Return to training and verify the change. Make sure the key performs the intended action before you rely on it in a match. If an action does not work as expected, check for a conflicting binding and confirm the selected platform preset.
Keyboard-and-mouse instructions apply only to the PC control scheme described here. If you play on console, use the in-game control settings and platform preset rather than transferring these keys to a controller. PUBG Mobile uses touch controls and is a different version of the game.
Common first-session mistakes and how to correct them
- Trying to learn every system at once: Start with Basic Training, then choose one live-match focus such as landing or zone awareness. Add more skills after the basic sequence feels familiar.
- Staying in one place too long to loot: Keep checking the map and the Blue Zone while collecting items. Begin moving with enough time to reach the safe area instead of waiting for the boundary to force you out.
- Assuming every map is always selectable: The map directory and the current service lineup are different things. Check the lobby or latest regional report for the actual options.
- Using a control list as if it were universal: The listed keys are PC defaults from PUBG Support. Your bindings may differ, and console controls are outside this list. Verify the settings for your own platform.
- Expecting a past Arcade mode to remain available: Some Arcade formats have limited service windows. Check the present menu rather than treating an old update announcement as proof of current availability.
- Changing too many keys without testing: Rebind what you need, then verify it in training. A setting change that is not tested can leave you searching for a command during a match.
A simple plan for your first few matches
- Finish Basic Training and repeat any exercise that left you unsure about a control or task.
- Choose a queue deliberately: Solo to learn independently, Duo for a two-player team, or Squad for a team of four.
- Review the active map and controls in the lobby and settings. Treat map availability as regional and subject to rotation.
- In the match, work through the survival loop: land, get oriented, collect equipment, track the Blue Zone, and move in time.
- After each match, identify one decision to improve—for example, whether you landed where intended or moved early enough. Practice that skill in the next match rather than trying to fix everything at once.
This approach keeps the first session focused on skills that carry across maps and queues. Once movement, map checks, and zone timing feel more natural, you can pay closer attention to team coordination, equipment choices, and the differences between maps.
