Repeat that loop rather than mashing buttons or chasing a universal “best” build. Soulslike combat varies by game: Elden Ring rewards managing stamina while dodging or guarding, while Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice puts timed deflections and posture at the center.
Use a simple combat loop
- Lock on when it helps. Lock-on can make it easier to track and aim at a single target. Turn it off or reassess it if several enemies, cramped movement, or camera behavior make it harder to respond. The PlayStation beginner guide to Elden Ring recommends lock-on as an aiming aid.
- Watch before committing. Notice an enemy’s wind-up, reach, and recovery. In Elden Ring, attacks and movement commit your character for a time; repeatedly pressing dodge can queue another roll and carry you into danger. Learn what the enemy does before spending your own opening.
- Keep a reserve for defense. In Elden Ring, stamina is spent on attacks, blocks, sprinting, and rolls. Avoid draining the bar completely when an enemy can still respond. Holding a shield slows stamina recovery, and blocking consumes stamina; if it runs out, you can be left exposed.
- Match your defense to the attack. Dodging, blocking, and parrying are not interchangeable. A dodge depends on timing and positioning; a shield can absorb some attacks but still costs stamina; a parry requires precise timing and is a higher-risk skill. You do not need to master parrying before you can make progress.
- Punish the recovery, not the wind-up. After an attack or combo, look for a genuine opening and use a manageable attack. Then recover and reassess instead of spending the whole window on a long sequence. Bandai Namco’s Elden Ring guide puts it plainly: “Patience is key in ELDEN RING.” Its guidance is about that game, but the practical idea—wait for a safe opportunity—can help you learn many combat systems.
- Change the problem if you are stuck. Depending on the game, that may mean practicing a specific response, changing equipment, or approaching from another route. In Elden Ring, you can explore elsewhere, level up, find different gear, use summons, or return later. More linear action games may not offer the same options.
Learn the game’s defense and resource rules
“Soulslike” describes a family of games, not one shared rulebook. Before deciding how to fight, identify what the game asks you to manage: dodge timing, blocking, deflection, stamina, posture, or some combination. Bandai Namco’s Elden Ring combat guide explains that game’s commitment, dodging, guarding, shields, and parrying; it should not be treated as a universal guide to every action game.

Elden Ring: stamina, dodge, and guard
In Elden Ring, stamina is a shared combat budget for attacks, blocks, sprinting, and rolls. A shield can help you block, but blocking is not free, and holding the shield slows recovery. Dodging can avoid an attack when timed and positioned well. The practical beginner habit is to leave room in the stamina bar for the next response instead of spending it all on offense.
Sekiro: deflection and posture
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice offers a useful contrast. Its official game guide describes attacks and timed deflections as ways to pressure an enemy’s posture. Breaking posture creates an opportunity for a deathblow. Rather than treating every encounter as a stamina-and-dodge problem, learn the timing of deflections and how the exchange builds posture pressure.

Choose a starting style without chasing a “best” build
There is no single beginner build that fits every player or every Soulslike. Pick a style you want to practice, then make sure it gives you enough room to learn. In Elden Ring, PlayStation describes power builds as heavier and more resilient, speed builds as more evasive, and magic builds as ranged. These are broad playstyle descriptions, not a guarantee that one is easiest for every player.
If you are starting Elden Ring, Bandai Namco’s character stats guide identifies Vigor with health and Endurance with stamina and equipment load. Those attributes can support survivability and a comfortable load, but they do not lock you into one style. Choose a weapon or approach you are willing to learn; let your play experience guide later adjustments.

When a fight keeps going badly
First, change one thing at a time. If you are getting hit while attacking, shorten your punish. If you cannot roll or block after an attack, spend less stamina. If a move catches you repeatedly, watch its wind-up and test a different defense instead of repeating the same response. These adjustments help distinguish a timing problem from a resource or positioning problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNext, consider whether the game lets you leave and return stronger or better prepared. PlayStation’s beginner advice recommends retreating from difficult encounters and returning with more skill, levels, or equipment. Bandai Namco’s Souls-series comparison also describes exploration, summons, and gear as ways to respond to difficulty in Elden Ring. That flexibility is especially relevant to its open world; do not assume a more linear game offers the same escape route.
