The best first session in Star Wars Outlaws is not about rushing into every firefight. Review the settings, choose a comfortable difficulty, use Nix to scout and manipulate encounters, and look for alternate routes before forcing your way through a guarded compound. If a location remains too dangerous, improve the relevant syndicate reputation through side missions and return later.
What Star Wars Outlaws is before you begin
Star Wars Outlaws is an open-world adventure set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. You play Kay Vess, a scoundrel traveling with her companion Nix. Ubisoft describes the game as a mix of blaster combat, stealth, gadgets, distraction, syndicate missions, speeder exploration and Trailblazer space dogfights.

#1 Best Overall
- Explore the galaxies in familiar planets and new planets with the first open world game of Star Wars
Set up the game before the first mission
Pause before you get deep into the opening sequence and make the game readable and manageable for you. The official beginner guide says the Settings menu contains Gameplay, Cognitive, Color, Vision and Hearing sections, and that the choices can be changed during play. You do not have to guess perfectly at the start.
Choose a Gameplay Experience
Gameplay Experience offers Story, Regular and Hard choices. These affect player health and enemy difficulty. Pick the option that lets you pay attention to exploration, stealth and the story rather than one that makes every early encounter a test of patience. If the balance is wrong, change it later instead of restarting your save.
- Story: a sensible starting point if you mainly want the narrative and Star Wars setting.
- Regular: the middle option for players who want normal combat pressure while learning the systems.
- Hard: a demanding starting point if you already know you want tougher enemy encounters.
These labels describe the options listed by the guide; the sources do not establish that one setting is universally best. Your choice can also depend on whether you intend to rely on stealth or fight more often.

Check accessibility and presentation options
Visit the Color, Vision and Hearing sections before you begin a long session. The guide gives color-blind settings, text-to-speech and larger subtitles as examples. Enable what makes information easier to distinguish, especially if you play on a smaller screen or sit farther from the display.
- Use a color-blind option if enemy, objective or interface colors are difficult to separate.
- Turn on larger subtitles if dialogue is hard to read at your normal distance.
- Try text-to-speech if reading every prompt while moving is uncomfortable.
- Review the control and gameplay pages again after your first mission, when you know which actions you use most often.
Do not treat accessibility settings as permanent commitments. The official guide explicitly says settings can be changed during play, so adjust them when your display, controller or playing environment changes.
Use a first-session routine that prevents avoidable mistakes
A short routine makes the opening much easier to understand. It also gives you a way to diagnose a difficult section instead of repeatedly attempting the same approach.
- Open Settings. Review controls, accessibility options and Gameplay Experience before committing to the opening difficulty.
- Learn the information view. When you reach a stealth section, stop moving for a moment and identify patrols, cover and the route you want to take.
- Send Nix ahead. Use Nix to reveal enemy positions, create a distraction or interact with equipment before Kay exposes herself.
- Deal with alarm risks first. The beginner guide specifically recommends prioritizing enemies marked as alarm risks.
- Check the perimeter. At a compound, look for another entrance before trying to defeat every guard at the most obvious doorway.
- Change plans when necessary. If direct access remains difficult, leave, complete a side mission that improves the relevant syndicate reputation and return when your standing gives you more options.
- Revisit settings after the tutorial period. Increase subtitle size, alter a visual option or change difficulty if the first encounters reveal a problem.
This sequence is intentionally flexible. You can fight when stealth breaks down, but beginning with information and positioning gives you more choices than immediately running into a guarded area.

Why stealth is the safest default when Kay is outnumbered
When several enemies can see Kay, an open firefight gives the group the advantage. The official beginner advice is to observe patrol patterns and use cover rather than assuming every encounter should start with shooting. Stealth is therefore a useful default, not a rule that forbids combat.
Read the area before moving
Pause at the edge of a room or outdoor patrol route. Watch where guards walk, identify moments when their sight lines separate and note solid cover along your intended path. A few seconds of observation can show whether the closest guard is actually the important problem or whether an alarm risk is positioned farther away.
Move from one safe piece of cover to the next instead of crossing the entire area in one run. If a route leaves Kay visible for too long, back up and wait for the patrol cycle to change. The goal is to control when enemies can see you, not to win a race across the compound.
Break contact instead of forcing a failed approach
If you are detected before reaching your objective, do not assume the only response is to continue forward. Retreat to cover, reassess the patrol pattern and try a different line. A failed stealth attempt is useful information: it shows which sight line, alarm position or doorway makes the route unsafe.
Combat remains available when detection occurs, but starting from cover and with an identified priority target is safer than standing in the center of a group. The guide’s advice is about giving yourself options, not about never firing the blaster.
Make Nix part of every encounter
Nix is more than a story companion. The official beginner guide says Nix can reveal enemy positions, distract or attack enemies, sabotage equipment, disable alarms and fetch items. Using these actions before Kay moves is one of the clearest ways to reduce the number of threats she has to manage at once.
Scout with Nix
Use Nix to gather information before exposing Kay. Revealing enemy positions helps you see the shape of a patrol and identify which route is safe. This is especially valuable in a large compound where the nearest guard may not be the guard capable of raising an alarm.

Create a distraction deliberately
A distraction should serve a route. Send Nix to pull an enemy’s attention away from the doorway, cover or gap you plan to use, then move while that sight line is open. Do not trigger a distraction without knowing where Kay will go next; otherwise the guard may simply return before you gain ground.
Handle alarm risks first
Enemies marked as alarm risks deserve priority because they can turn a quiet infiltration into a wider confrontation. The beginner guide specifically calls out these enemies. If an alarm risk blocks your path, use Nix to distract or attack it, sabotage or disable the relevant alarm equipment when possible, or choose another route that keeps Kay out of its view.
Use sabotage and item fetching as positioning tools
Nix’s ability to sabotage equipment can change an encounter before it begins. His ability to fetch items can also let Kay interact with an area without immediately standing in the most exposed position. Treat both actions as ways to create time and space, not as abilities reserved for emergencies.
The exact control prompt can vary by platform and settings, so follow the on-screen command rather than relying on a button remembered from another game. If an action does not appear, move closer, adjust your angle or check the control layout in Settings.
How to approach a guarded compound
Large compounds are designed to make the obvious entrance look like the only entrance. The beginner guide advises checking the surroundings for alternate entrances. Make that your first question whenever a gate or heavily guarded doorway seems overwhelming.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Search the perimeter
Walk the outside edge far enough to see whether the compound has another approach. Look for a side opening, a less-observed section of the perimeter or a path that lets Kay avoid the densest patrol group. You do not need to defeat every guard if the objective can be reached from a different direction.
Plan around the alarm network
Before entering, identify the alarm risk and any equipment Nix can affect. A route that is slightly longer but keeps Kay away from the alarm risk is often better than the shortest route through the center. If you must pass near an alarm risk, wait for a patrol gap and use Nix to create the opening.

Leave and return when the location is not ready for you
Some locations are difficult because your current relationship with a syndicate does not give you an easier way in. The guide says side missions can improve reputation, and that a “Good” standing can let Kay enter some locations that otherwise call for stealth. If an infiltration is consuming all your resources, mark it mentally as a return visit rather than treating the setback as a skill failure.
Reputation is not a universal key for every location; the source says it can permit entry to some locations. Check the current objective and the available side missions, then decide whether a reputation change is a better use of time than another direct attempt.
Use syndicate reputation as an access strategy
Syndicate missions are part of the game’s core structure, not merely optional combat errands. Completing side missions can improve your reputation with the relevant syndicate. At “Good” standing, Kay may be able to enter certain locations that would otherwise require stealth.
- Identify which syndicate is associated with the difficult location or objective.
- Review available side missions connected to that syndicate.
- Complete a mission if its risk and reward fit your current equipment and comfort level.
- Check your standing and revisit the location rather than assuming every improvement applies everywhere.
This gives you a non-combat answer to a common new-player problem: a compound that appears too heavily guarded. It also makes your route through the open world feel responsive to the choices you make instead of forcing one infiltration solution.
Know the main systems you will be learning
Understanding the game’s broad systems helps you decide what to practice first. Ubisoft’s overview identifies the following pillars:
| System | What it means for a new player |
|---|---|
| Blaster combat | Use when stealth is impractical or has already broken down; cover and target priority still matter. |
| Stealth | Observe patrols, stay behind cover and choose a route that limits how many enemies can see Kay. |
| Gadgets and distraction | Combine equipment and Nix’s actions to create openings instead of attacking every guard directly. |
| Syndicate missions and reputation | Side missions can improve standing, and “Good” standing can open some locations that otherwise call for stealth. |
| Speeder exploration | Travel through the open world and use exploration to reach missions, compounds and other activities. |
| Trailblazer space dogfights | Space combat is another distinct activity, so do not judge your ground-game learning curve by your first dogfight. |
The table describes the roles Ubisoft identifies; it is not a promise that every system is available immediately or that one system is mandatory for every objective.
Choosing where to play
Choose the platform that matches how you actually play. Ubisoft lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC storefronts, Steam and Switch 2. The cited sources do not establish a performance ranking among the consoles or PC, so a “best” platform depends on your existing hardware, preferred screen and control setup.

Demo and edition questions
Can you try it before buying?
Ubisoft currently advertises a free three-hour gameplay demo. Its description places the sample in a Tatooine section where Kay and Nix seek a mercenary for their crew. Demo availability can change by platform and region, so check the listing on the platform where you intend to play rather than assuming it is offered everywhere.
Do you need Gold or Ultimate?
No expanded edition is required to learn the beginner systems. Ubisoft describes Gold and Ultimate editions as including additional content such as the Season Pass, cosmetics and a digital art book. Ubisoft’s Switch 2 launch announcement says buying the Switch 2 game includes the base game and Season Pass, whose contents include story packs and cosmetics. Edition contents are platform-dependent; compare the current store listing if those extras matter to you.
For a new player, choose based on the base game’s availability and your preferred platform first. The cited sources do not establish that a higher edition is worth its price for every player.
Common first-hour problems and practical fixes
“I keep getting spotted before I reach the objective.”
- Stop and observe the patrol cycle instead of crossing immediately.
- Use cover to shorten the distance traveled while visible.
- Send Nix to reveal positions or distract the guard controlling the sight line.
- Search for a different entrance around the compound.
“The alarm turns every attempt into a firefight.”
- Identify the enemy marked as an alarm risk before moving through the area.
- Use Nix to distract or attack that enemy, or disable the alarm equipment when the opportunity appears.
- If the route is still exposed, retreat and approach from another side rather than repeating the same entry.
“A location feels impossible to enter quietly.”
- Check the perimeter for alternate entrances.
- Look for a side mission that improves the relevant syndicate reputation.
- Return after reaching “Good” standing if the location is one of those where that status permits entry.
“The interface or subtitles are difficult to read.”
- Open Settings and check Color, Vision and Hearing options.
- Try larger subtitles, text-to-speech or a color-blind setting as appropriate.
- Revisit Gameplay Experience if visual clarity is being mistaken for combat difficulty.
