How to Get Started With Watch Dogs 2: Beginner Tips for Hacking, Stealth, and Combat

Watch Dogs 2 is easiest to learn when you treat every restricted area as a puzzle before treating it as a firefight. Scout with cameras or remote devices, note guards and connected objects, then use hacks to distract, disrupt, or open a route. If a plan fails, you can switch to direct combat, retreat, or try a different angle.

The game does not force one build or a single moral approach. Ubisoft creative director Jonathan Morin described three intended styles—“combat hacker,” “ghost hacker,” and “trickster hacker”—and said, “The player has the freedom to play the way they want.” Use those labels as planning ideas, not as permanent classes.

The basic Watch Dogs 2 loop

Most encounters become manageable when you follow the same four-part loop:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Observe: Find a safe viewpoint and inspect the area with cameras or other remote access when the mission and your unlocked abilities allow it.
  2. Identify options: Mark guards, vehicles, security systems, drones, robots, and other connected objects you can interact with. Not every target is hackable in every mission.
  3. Create an opening: Trigger a distraction, alter the environment, or otherwise separate the people who can expose you.
  4. Move, act, or withdraw: Cross the gap, perform the objective, or leave the area if the situation becomes too dangerous.

This rhythm keeps Marcus out of unnecessary danger and makes hacking useful even when it does not solve an encounter by itself. Ubisoft’s public overview presents hacking connected devices, vehicles, infrastructure, and security robots as core possibilities; the exact targets and available interactions depend on the mission and your abilities.

What to do before entering a restricted area

Do not sprint through the nearest entrance as soon as a mission marker appears. Spend a few seconds building a mental map. The following sequence is a practical habit rather than a guaranteed solution for every location.

  1. Find cover first. Begin from a position where Marcus is not immediately exposed. You want time to inspect the space without being forced into movement.
  2. Check remote viewpoints. Use nearby cameras or other remote devices if they are available. Look for alternate entrances, elevated positions, patrol routes, and places where you can hide after completing the objective.
  3. Locate people who can interrupt the plan. Identify guards and other enemies, then note which ones are isolated and which ones can see the route you intend to use.
  4. Look for connected objects. Scan for devices, vehicles, infrastructure, drones, or security robots that might provide information, a distraction, or a way to change the encounter.
  5. Choose an exit before you commit. A route out matters as much as the route in. If you are detected, you should already know which cover or open space you are moving toward.

There is no universally best target to hack. A device that is useful in one encounter may be inaccessible, irrelevant, or risky in another. Treat each object as an option and confirm what it can do before exposing Marcus.

How hacking creates openings

Hacking is most valuable when it changes the timing or position of an encounter. Instead of asking whether a hack defeats an enemy, ask what problem it solves: a guard is watching a doorway, two enemies are standing together, a route has no cover, or you need information without moving Marcus.

Distraction

Use a connected object to draw attention away from the path you want to take when the encounter permits it. Move only after the distraction has created enough separation for your route. The precise duration and detection behavior can vary, so avoid assuming that one distraction always provides a fixed amount of time.

Disruption

An environmental hack can interrupt the way a group is positioned or force you to rethink its response. The goal is not necessarily to eliminate anyone; it is to make the area less coordinated long enough to reach cover, an objective, or an exit.

Remote interaction

Drones and security robots can let you inspect or interact with a location from a safer position when the mission and your unlocked abilities support that access. Use them to gather information first. Sending a remote device into an unknown area without an exit plan can simply reveal your position or leave the tool somewhere unhelpful.

Changing the route

If a direct path is watched, hacking may let you create a different route or a temporary opening. Consider vertical movement, side entrances, and spaces behind cover rather than repeatedly trying the same door. The game’s connected-world design rewards looking for alternatives, but it does not guarantee that every environmental object can be manipulated.

Choosing a play style

Morin’s three labels describe approaches rather than rigid character classes. You can change methods from one mission to the next and combine them in the same encounter.

Approach What it emphasizes Beginner guidance When to change plans
Ghost hacker Avoiding notice and using distractions Scout first, separate guards with available hacks, and move between cover when the route is clear. Switch to a remote or combat option if the objective leaves no safe path or the area becomes too crowded.
Trickster hacker Acting through drones and other hackable devices Inspect and interact from a safer position before Marcus enters danger. Access depends on the target and unlocked skills. Bring Marcus closer only after you understand the area and have an exit.
Combat hacker Combining active hacks with takedowns or direct combat Use hacks to interrupt or reshape the fight, keep an escape route, and avoid treating gunplay as the only answer. Withdraw when the fight exposes you to too many threats or blocks the objective.

None of these approaches is a mandatory build. Your equipment, available hacks, mission rules, and comfort with the controls all affect which option is sensible in a particular location.

Stealth fundamentals for a first playthrough

Move after you create a gap

Stealth is easier when movement follows preparation. Use a distraction or environmental change, then cross to the next piece of cover rather than wandering while several enemies can see the route. If the opening closes, stop and reassess instead of trying to force the same path.

Keep the objective and the exit in mind

Reaching a target is only half the job. Before interacting with an objective, identify where you will go if someone notices you. A short retreat into cover can be safer than pushing deeper into the restricted area.

Do not turn one mistake into a full commitment

A small detection does not require an extended firefight. Break line of sight, relocate, and use any available hack that changes the situation. If the encounter becomes chaotic, leaving the immediate area can give you a chance to begin the approach again.

Expect situation-specific behavior

The official material establishes stealth and hacking as options but does not provide a universal detection timer or a single set of enemy reactions. Avoid plans that depend on an exact number of seconds or assume every guard responds identically. Watch what the current group is doing and adapt.

Using remote tools safely

Remote play is not just a novelty; it is a way to gather information without placing Marcus in the first line of danger. Before sending a drone or robot forward, answer three questions:

  • What information am I trying to obtain?
  • What interaction do I expect to perform?
  • Where will Marcus go after the remote device finishes?

If you cannot answer the third question, use the device for observation rather than committing it to a risky interaction. Access varies by mission, target, and unlocked ability, so do not assume that a tool can control every machine or reach every part of a map.

When combat starts

Watch Dogs 2 permits direct combat, but a gunfight is one option rather than the intended default for every encounter. If you are discovered, pause long enough to identify the immediate problem.

  1. Find the source of pressure. Determine which enemies can currently reach or see Marcus and move toward cover that blocks those threats.
  2. Use available hacks to interrupt the group. A connected object may distract, disrupt, or otherwise change the fight. The useful interaction depends on the specific area.
  3. Protect the escape route. Do not advance so far that you lose the path you planned before the fight began.
  4. Disengage when the objective allows it. Retreating to a safer position can be more effective than trying to defeat every enemy in place.

Direct combat is still appropriate when a stealth route collapses or the mission gives you no practical alternative. The important beginner habit is to treat hacking and positioning as part of combat, not to abandon them the moment detection occurs.

Can you play without lethal force?

Yes, nonlethal play is a supported option. In a PlayStation Blog feature published June 24, 2016, Ubisoft creative director Jonathan Morin said: “Unlike in the original game, you can actually reach Watch Dogs 2’s finale without once using deadly force.” That statement describes the overall design possibility; it does not mean every encounter is effortless, that every enemy can be bypassed in the same way, or that combat never occurs.

A nonlethal run therefore benefits from the same habits as stealth play: scout first, use available distractions and remote interactions, avoid unnecessary escalation, and retreat when a route becomes unsafe. You can still be detected or forced to react; the distinction is that the game does not require you to kill your way to the finale.

Skills and progression: how to choose upgrades

There is no verified universal early-game skill order. The official material supports a broad range of hacks and approaches, not a mandatory shopping list or a universally best first unlock. Read each in-game description and select upgrades that support the way you actually approach encounters.

If you prefer stealth

Prioritize descriptions that improve your ability to create openings, gather information, or operate without exposing Marcus. Consider whether an upgrade helps you reach objectives safely rather than judging it only by how dramatic its effect sounds.

If you prefer remote play

Look for abilities that expand what you can inspect or interact with from a distance, while remembering that access still depends on the mission and target. Remote options are most useful when they reduce the need to enter a guarded area blindly.

If you prefer combat

Choose upgrades that complement your willingness to fight, but keep at least one way to disrupt or disengage. A combat-focused approach is more flexible when hacking can create space instead of merely adding damage.

Because exact prerequisites and practical effects were not established in the available official material, avoid copying a claimed “best build” without checking the current in-game descriptions.

A first-session plan

Use this sequence for your opening hours without assuming that every mission will unfold identically:

  1. Learn the observation tools. Practice switching to cameras or remote devices in a safe area so you understand how information reaches you before a guard is searching for Marcus.
  2. Test one hack at a time. When you see a connected object, check what interaction is available and what changes afterward. This teaches you the game’s vocabulary without committing to a risky chain of actions.
  3. Attempt a quiet entry. Scout a restricted space, create one opening, and move only as far as your exit remains clear.
  4. Recover from detection deliberately. If the plan fails, use cover, look for a hackable interruption, and decide whether to continue, fight, or withdraw.
  5. Review skills after several encounters. Choose upgrades based on the problems you repeatedly faced, not on a fixed list made for a different play style.
  6. Try another approach later. Replaying the same kind of situation with a remote tool or a more direct method helps you understand which options you enjoy and which abilities deserve attention.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Entering before scouting: You lose the chance to identify safe routes, isolated guards, and useful devices.
  • Hacking without a purpose: An interaction is only valuable if it creates information, an opening, disruption, or an escape.
  • Assuming every object works everywhere: Mission conditions and unlocked abilities limit access.
  • Staying in a bad fight: Detection does not obligate you to clear the entire area. Cover and withdrawal are legitimate choices.
  • Following a rigid build guide: No exact universal skill order is established; your preferred approach should determine your upgrades.
  • Confusing style labels with classes: Ghost, trickster, and combat hacker describe methods you can mix, not permanent character roles.
  • Ignoring the way out: An entry plan without an exit often turns a successful objective interaction into an avoidable chase.

Quick checklist before you press forward

  • Have I inspected the area from a safe position?
  • Which guards or threats can see the route I want?
  • What connected objects, vehicles, drones, or robots are actually available here?
  • Am I using a hack to solve a specific problem?
  • Where will Marcus go if the opening closes?
  • Would a remote interaction be safer than entering now?
  • If combat begins, can I interrupt it or withdraw instead of pushing deeper?
