In Fortnite, start with Settings > Video and check the available display resolutions. Stretched aspect ratios are not available in Ranked, tournaments, and similar Competitive modes: Epic says those modes are restricted to 16:9, so side bars may appear. A custom resolution or GPU-scaling change should not be treated as a way around that rule.
Check Fortnite’s resolution and display mode

Open Fortnite and select Settings.

Open the Video tab and inspect the available display resolution choices and selected display or window mode. Resolution is separate from 3D Resolution, anti-aliasing, and super-resolution settings.
Epic’s competitive PC settings guidance recommends using your monitor’s default resolution. That is the straightforward choice for a predictable image; changing 3D Resolution or anti-aliasing affects rendering quality or performance, not Fortnite’s Competitive aspect-ratio restriction. Epic’s 2026 competitive PC settings guide and its explanation of anti-aliasing and super resolution distinguish these setup choices.
What to expect in Ranked and tournaments
Epic Games Player Support states: “Please note that Competitive modes (Ranked, Tournaments, and similar modes) are restricted to a 16:9 aspect ratio.” If you try a non-16:9 custom resolution in one of these modes, do not expect the game to show a stretched image; side bars are expected behavior under Epic’s guidance.

This distinction matters: GPU scaling controls how an image is fitted to a display, while the game-mode rule determines the aspect ratio available in Competitive play. Epic’s troubleshooting steps for scaling do not establish a supported method to bypass the 16:9 limit.
Set NVIDIA scaling to full screen if the image is not scaling as expected
For a PC with an NVIDIA GPU, Epic documents the following display-scaling path as troubleshooting for fullscreen crashes or freezing. It may change how an image is scaled on the display; it is not a workaround for the Competitive restriction.

Right-click the Windows desktop and open NVIDIA Control Panel.

Select Adjust desktop size and position.

Select the display you use for Fortnite.

Set Scaling mode to Full-screen.

Set Perform scaling on to GPU, then apply the change.

These are Epic’s published steps for NVIDIA scaling troubleshooting in its Fortnite graphics-issues support guide. The exact controls or available choices may vary by driver and display setup.
If Fortnite’s settings keep resetting
Epic recommends checking whether Fortnite’s configuration file is marked read-only when settings revert after relaunch. This addresses settings that fail to save; it does not prove that editing the file can unlock a custom resolution or change Competitive mode rules.

Clear the Read-only checkbox and apply the change.

Choose settings based on what you want to change
