To get stretched resolution in VALORANT, you must configure scaling outside the game as well as selecting a non-native resolution in VALORANT. Choose Full-screen scaling in NVIDIA Control Panel, Full Panel in AMD Software, or Stretched in Intel Graphics Command Center. Then run VALORANT in Fullscreen and select a supported 4:3 or 16:10 resolution.
Black bars usually mean that the GPU, monitor, or laptop display path is preserving the original aspect ratio instead of stretching the image.

What stretched resolution actually means
Your monitor has a native resolution and aspect ratio. For example, a 1920×1080 monitor is 16:9. A resolution such as 1280×960 is 4:3. When VALORANT sends that 4:3 image to a 16:9 display, something must scale it.
- Preserve aspect ratio: Keeps the image’s proportions and adds black bars.
- Full-screen stretching: Expands the image across the entire display, making the picture wider.
- No scaling or centered: Shows the smaller image without enlarging it, leaving borders around it.
NVIDIA labels these modes Aspect ratio, Full-screen, and No scaling. AMD uses Preserve aspect ratio, Full Panel, and Center. Intel uses Maintain Aspect Ratio, Stretched, and Centered.

The quick fix
- Set Windows to your monitor’s recommended/native resolution and refresh rate.
- Open your graphics control panel and enable GPU scaling if that option exists.
- Choose the full-screen stretching mode for your GPU.
- Launch VALORANT using Fullscreen, not Windowed Fullscreen, while testing.
- Select a supported non-native resolution such as 1280×960, 1440×1080, or 1680×1050.
- Set VALORANT’s Aspect Ratio Method to Fill if the option is available.
- Apply the settings and restart VALORANT if the display does not change.
Important: VALORANT’s Fill setting is not always enough. The driver or monitor can still preserve the image’s aspect ratio, particularly in borderless mode or on hybrid laptops.
NVIDIA: use Full-screen scaling
- Right-click the Windows desktop and open NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Go to Display → Adjust desktop size and position.
- Open the Scaling tab.
- Set Scaling mode to Full-screen.
- If available, select the NVIDIA GPU as the device performing scaling.
- Click Apply.
- Open VALORANT in Fullscreen and select your non-native resolution.
NVIDIA’s Full-screen mode stretches the image to fill the display. Aspect ratio preserves the original shape and can create black bars, while No scaling centers the image.
If the resolution is missing
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel → Change resolution.
- Click Customize.
- Select Create Custom Resolution.
- Enter the width, height, refresh rate, and timing values.
- Test the mode and apply it only if the monitor accepts it.
Custom modes are not guaranteed to work. NVIDIA warns that an unsupported resolution or refresh rate can cause an out-of-range message or a black screen. See NVIDIA’s custom-resolution guidance.
AMD: use Full Panel
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- Open Display settings.
- Enable GPU Scaling.
- Set Scaling Mode to Full Panel.
- Apply the setting.
- Launch VALORANT in Fullscreen and select the desired resolution.
AMD’s Full Panel mode expands a non-native image to the entire monitor. Preserve aspect ratio keeps the image’s shape and may add side bars; Center prevents scaling. AMD notes that scaling controls may not be available on every system and that the screen can briefly go blank when scaling is changed. Its documented prerequisites include a supported digital connection, native Windows resolution and refresh rate, and an appropriate graphics driver.

Use AMD’s GPU scaling documentation for the current menu terminology. Custom-resolution availability varies by driver, GPU, monitor, cable, refresh rate, and laptop display routing.
Intel: use Stretched
- Open Intel Graphics Command Center.
- Go to Display and select the relevant monitor.
- Choose a resolution different from the recommended/native resolution.
- Set Scale to Stretched.
- Launch VALORANT and select the same resolution in Video settings.
- Apply and save the changes.
Intel’s scaling modes include Centered, Stretched, Maintain Aspect Ratio, and Custom. Intel says additional scaling options may appear only after selecting a resolution different from the display’s maximum or recommended resolution. See Intel’s scaling-mode explanation and its black-bar troubleshooting procedure.
Which resolutions can you use?
| Resolution | Aspect ratio | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1280×960 | 4:3 | Common lower-resolution choice |
| 1440×1080 | 4:3 | Higher-quality 4:3 option |
| 1280×1024 | 5:4 | Can produce unusual results on widescreen displays |
| 1680×1050 | 16:10 | Less extreme distortion on some 16:9 monitors |
| 1920×1080 | 16:9 | Native choice for many Full HD monitors |
These are examples, not guaranteed modes. The monitor and driver must accept the resolution at the selected refresh rate. The resolution alone does not determine whether black bars appear; the source aspect ratio, display aspect ratio, scaling mode, display mode, and hardware path all matter.

Black bars at the top and bottom
Check whether the selected resolution is wider than the active display mode, whether the monitor is preserving aspect ratio, and whether VALORANT changed resolutions during a loading transition. Test a standard 4:3 mode such as 1280×960 in exclusive Fullscreen.
The resolution is not listed in VALORANT
The mode may not be exposed by Windows or the driver, may be unsupported at the chosen refresh rate, or may have been created for another display. Add it through the appropriate GPU software where supported, use the monitor’s native refresh rate while testing, then restart VALORANT.
Scaling options are missing
On laptops, the discrete GPU may render VALORANT while integrated Intel graphics controls the internal panel. In that case, NVIDIA Control Panel may not provide the scaling controls you expect. Check Intel Graphics Command Center or the laptop manufacturer’s display utility instead.

It works in the menu but not in a match
- Confirm that VALORANT remains in Fullscreen.
- Check the resolution after entering a match.
- Temporarily disable overlays.
- Test native resolution, then switch back to the non-native mode.
- Recheck driver scaling after game or driver updates.
- Avoid unsupported third-party tools that inject into the game.
The screen goes black after creating a custom mode
Wait for the display test to revert. If it does not, restore a supported resolution through Windows recovery or Safe Mode. Remove the custom mode and recreate it using the monitor’s native refresh rate. A temporary black screen or out-of-range message does not usually mean the display is permanently damaged.
Fullscreen versus Windowed Fullscreen
Fullscreen is the best diagnostic mode because the game selects a display mode directly, making GPU scaling easier to isolate. It can have less convenient Alt-Tab behavior and may briefly blank the screen when changing modes.
Windowed Fullscreen is convenient for switching applications, but the desktop compositor remains involved. A custom desktop resolution may be necessary, and scaling can behave differently during loading or display transitions. Community reports describe black bars returning during some transitions, but those reports are not official confirmation of a universal VALORANT bug.
GPU scaling versus monitor scaling
GPU scaling is configured through NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel software and is usually easier to reproduce across games. Monitor scaling is configured through the monitor’s on-screen display and may use labels such as Wide, Full, 1:1, Aspect, Original, or Auto.

During troubleshooting, use one clearly understood scaling path. If both the GPU and monitor are applying aspect-ratio rules, their settings can make the result difficult to diagnose.
Trade-offs of stretched resolution
- Image distortion: A 4:3 image stretched to 16:9 changes the proportions of the scene and may make models appear wider.
- Clarity: Non-native output is scaled and may look softer than native resolution.
- User interface: Menus and HUD elements can appear distorted or positioned differently.
- Performance: A lower resolution may reduce GPU workload if the system is GPU-bound, but increased FPS or lower latency is not guaranteed.
- Competitive benefit: Any advantage is subjective and player-dependent. Stretched resolution does not inherently make a player more accurate or improve input latency.
How to restore normal display settings
- Set VALORANT to your monitor’s native resolution.
- Set Windows to the recommended/native resolution and refresh rate.
- Set NVIDIA to Aspect ratio, AMD to Preserve aspect ratio, or Intel to Maintain Aspect Ratio.
- Remove any custom resolutions you no longer need.
- Set the monitor’s scaling option to Auto, Aspect, or its original default.
Do not edit VALORANT files or use registry tweaks as a first-line solution. The supported troubleshooting path is Windows, the GPU control panel, the monitor’s OSD, and VALORANT’s own Video settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does VALORANT officially support stretched resolution?
VALORANT can display a stretched non-native image when the GPU, monitor, or display path performs full-screen scaling. Selecting a resolution in the game alone does not guarantee true stretching.
Is stretched resolution allowed?
Do not assume that third-party injectors or unsupported tools are safe. Use the game, Windows, GPU software, and monitor settings rather than tools that modify or inject into VALORANT.
Does stretched resolution increase FPS?
It can reduce rendering workload when you use a lower resolution and the system is GPU-bound, but an FPS or latency improvement is not guaranteed.
Why are NVIDIA scaling options missing on a laptop?
The internal panel may be controlled by Intel integrated graphics even when NVIDIA renders the game. Check Intel Graphics Command Center and the laptop’s display-routing settings.
Can monitor settings cause black bars?
Yes. Monitor modes such as Aspect, 1:1, Auto, or Original can preserve the image shape. Try Full or Wide while GPU scaling is configured for stretching.
