To grow tea in Stardew Valley, reach two hearts with Caroline and trigger her sunroom event. She mails the Tea Sapling recipe the next day. Plant a sapling in untilled soil or a Garden Pot; it matures in 20 days without watering. Mature Tea Bushes produce one Tea Leaf per day from the 22nd through the 28th of spring, summer and fall, and indoors during winter.

How to unlock the Tea Sapling recipe

Raise your friendship with Caroline to two hearts, then enter the sunroom to trigger her event. The Tea Sapling recipe arrives by mail the following day. You do not need to buy saplings from Pierre or JojaMart; neither shop lists them as available. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Tea Sapling page documents the recipe and alternate sources.

Crafting ingredients

Each Tea Sapling requires two Wild Seeds of any season, five Fiber and five Wood. Wild Seeds are interchangeable across seasons for this recipe.

Other ways to get a sapling

  • The Traveling Cart may occasionally stock Tea Saplings. Its listed price range is 750–1,250g; stock and price can vary.
  • Caroline sells up to ten Tea Saplings at the Desert Festival for ten Calico Eggs each.

Planting and growing Tea Bushes

Plant Tea Saplings on untilled soil outdoors or in a Garden Pot. They take 20 days to mature, need no watering and continue growing outdoors through winter. Garden Pots allow tea growing in locations where bushes cannot ordinarily be planted outdoors, with normal growth and production behavior. Tree Fertilizer cannot be used on Tea Bushes, according to the Tea Bush page.

When Tea Bushes produce leaves

A mature bush produces one Tea Leaf per day on days 22–28 of spring, summer and fall. That is the final week of each of those seasons. In winter, a bush produces leaves if it is indoors; outdoor bushes do not produce winter leaves. A bush remains planted after harvesting, so you do not need to replant it for each harvest period.

For planning, allow 20 days for maturation, then expect the first leaves when the season reaches day 22 if the bush is already mature. The Tea Leaves page lists the harvest timing and item values.

Choose planting spots with movement in mind

Tea Bushes block the tile they occupy, so leave room for walkways before planting a row. They can also serve as permanent fences around an animal yard. In version 1.6 and later, chopping a bush with a Gold or Iridium Axe returns a Tea Sapling, according to the Tea Bush page.

Keep, harvest or sell

The Stardew Valley Wiki lists Tea Saplings at 250g when sold; version 1.6 reduced that listed value from 500g. It also notes that crafting and selling a sapling is more profitable than selling its ingredients. These are in-game values, not real-world prices, and item values may change between game versions.

The Tea Leaves page lists a base value of 50g per leaf and 100g for Green Tea, rising to 140g with the Artisan profession. Those figures are listed game values. Whether to sell saplings or keep bushes depends on whether you value immediate sale proceeds, the recurring seasonal harvest, planting space or the other uses for leaves; the listed values alone do not establish a profit rate over time.
