If GTA V keeps crashing or freezing on PS4, start with a full shutdown and cache clear, then check whether the problem follows the disc, console, save, or GTA Online connection. Work through the checks below in order and stop when the problem is resolved. Back up Story Mode saves before removing or isolating them; deleting the game application is a separate step and does not mean deleting saved data.
Try these fixes in order
These nine steps organize Rockstar’s documented checks; they are not nine guaranteed cures. Begin with the least disruptive steps and move on only if the symptom continues.
1. Fully power down the PS4 and clear GTA V’s cache
- Turn the PS4 completely off, not into Rest Mode, and wait at least 30 seconds after it has powered down.
- Restart the console and begin launching GTAV.
- While the game starts, hold L1 + R1 until the initial brightness calibration screen appears.
Rockstar says temporary cache files can become corrupted and cause freezes, loading errors, or connectivity issues. This procedure does not delete saves or progress, but it resets brightness and language settings. Rockstar’s PS4 cache-clearing instructions were last updated April 29, 2024.
2. Check whether other games and discs work
Try another game disc, and if possible, another game you know works. If several discs have trouble, the PS4’s disc-reading hardware or console may be involved. If other discs work but the GTAV disc does not, inspect and test that disc before changing saves or reinstalling. This is a diagnostic clue, not a definitive hardware test.

3. Look for signs of a disc-reading problem
Rockstar identifies missing audio, cutscenes that stutter or freeze, dialogue that cuts in and out, and crashes limited to a particular disc or console as possible signs of disc-reading trouble. These symptoms do not prove the disc is faulty. If available, test the GTAV disc in another console: failure there may indicate disc damage, while success there can point toward the original PS4. Neither result alone is conclusive. See Rockstar’s disc-versus-console troubleshooting guidance.
4. Update PS4 system software in Safe Mode
- Turn off the PS4 completely.
- Press and hold the console’s power button. Keep holding it until the second beep, about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect a DualShock 4 to the console with a USB cable, then press the PS button.
- Choose Update System Software and follow the on-screen instructions.
Use a USB cable that supports controller data if the console does not recognize the controller in Safe Mode. Rockstar lists this as the first of three Safe Mode checks in its PS4 console troubleshooting steps.

5. Restore default settings in Safe Mode
Enter Safe Mode using the steps above and choose Restore Default Settings. This is not the same as an initialization or wipe option; do not select an option that initializes the PS4 when your goal is to restore settings. Rockstar lists restoring defaults after updating system software.
6. Rebuild the PS4 database
In Safe Mode, choose Rebuild Database. Rockstar describes this as scanning the drive and creating a new database. The process can take a long time depending on the amount and type of content on the console, so do not interrupt it. Rockstar says its listed troubleshooting steps do not adversely affect saves or GTAV progress.

7. Reinstall the GTAV application
- Open Settings > System Storage Management > Applications.
- Select GTAV and delete the application.
- Reinstall the game from the disc.
This removes the installed application, not the saved-data files. Rockstar says reinstalling this way does not affect game saves or GTA Online progress.
8. Back up and isolate Story Mode saves
If Story Mode crashes while loading or the problem began around a particular save, test whether a save is involved. First copy saves to PlayStation Plus online storage, if you are a member, or to USB storage. Confirm that the backup is present before removing or testing without the original save. Then restore saves one at a time to see whether the problem returns with a particular file. Do not delete saves before you have a confirmed backup.

Rockstar also suggests disconnecting the PS4 from the internet and trying to load Story Mode. If it loads offline but not while connected, that helps separate a connectivity-related problem from one involving the save, disc, or console; it does not identify the cause by itself. 9. Separate GTA Online connection trouble from a local crash
If the issue happens only when entering GTA Online, check Rockstar’s live service status before changing local game data. Test the PS4’s internet connection; Rockstar recommends trying a wired Ethernet connection and its network troubleshooting steps for connection problems. A service-side interruption or network problem is a different branch from a crash that also occurs offline.

Compare the symptom patterns to decide what to test next:

Rockstar’s GTA Online connection troubleshooting for PS4 was last updated August 28, 2024. If the tests point to a PS4 hardware problem, contact PlayStation support; for a damaged disc or a game-specific issue, use the appropriate official support channel.

Record when the failure occurs—during boot, loading Story Mode, gameplay, or GTA Online—and whether other discs work, the GTAV disc works on another console, offline Story Mode loads, or the issue returns with a particular save. Those comparisons help narrow the likely branch without treating any one test as proof.
Rockstar’s April 26, 2022 GTAV Title Update 1.56 notes document fixes for several crashes across PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, as well as a separate PS4 and Xbox One fix for getting stuck at the Rockstar logo during boot. Those historical fixes do not establish the cause of a current crash. If none of the checks above resolves the issue, contact Rockstar Support with the symptom pattern and tests you have already tried.
