Greater Affixes were especially valuable, but there was no single best item for every class or build. These are Season 4 rules, not current-game instructions: Blizzard later changed the systems.
How Season 4 gear was designed to work
Season 4 reduced the number of affixes on dropped Legendary and Rare items while making those affixes more effective. Blizzard announced three affixes on Legendary items and two on Rare items, with examples such as Movement Speed, Maximum Life, and ranks to a Core Skill. The goal was to make upgrades easier to recognize and shift more customization into crafting. Blizzard’s Season 4 overview explains the itemization changes.

Blizzard also reduced the overall number of item drops and adjusted salvaging and crafting materials. It did not quantify the drop reduction, so there is no reliable percentage to use when estimating how often useful gear should appear. The overview’s stated aim was to spend more time fighting and less time sorting loot.
How to judge a gear drop
Start with the item’s base affixes and ask whether they support your particular build. A higher item rarity or a promising-looking number alone does not make an item an upgrade; compare the effects you would actually use. This is a practical comparison method based on Blizzard’s Season 4 system descriptions, not a universal best-in-slot ranking.
#1 Best Overall
- Build fit: Prioritize affixes that improve your build rather than assuming one stat is best for every class.
- Greater Affixes: Check whether an item has one. Blizzard described these as 1.5 times more powerful than normal affixes in its Season 4 overview. They appeared only on Ancestral Legendary and Unique items under those rules, and could not be created by Enchanting; you had to find them on a drop. See Blizzard’s Greater Affix explanation.
- Tempering potential: Consider whether the item can be Tempered and whether it has useful remaining Tempering Durability.
- Endgame investment: For a promising item, take its Masterworking progress into account as well as its affixes.
These checks help compare two items for a specific build; the official Season 4 material does not establish class-specific optimal gear lists or comparative test results.
How to Temper an item in Season 4
Tempering let you add an available affix to an item using a learned Crafting Manual. Manuals grouped choices into categories including Weapons, Offensive, Defensive, Mobility, Utility, and Resource. Blizzard’s Season 4 description directed players to a Blacksmith to Temper an item. Read the official Tempering overview.

- LORD OF HATRED EXPANSION — Includes Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred Standard Edition and Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred. The Diablo IV base game is required to play.
- IN-GAME EXTRAS — Get 1 Extra Stash Tab, 2 Additional Character Slots, and 3 Decor Items in World of Warcraft.
- NEW CLASSES AND REGION — Master two new classes and explore the ancient region of Skovos in the Lord of Hatred expansion.
- ACTION RPG ADVENTURE — Slay demons, master abilities, explore nightmarish dungeons, and find legendary loot in a dark open world.
- NEW CAMPAIGN AGAINST MEPHISTO — Make your stand against the Prime Evil Mephisto in a rich new story featuring new enemies, regions, and narrative twists.
- Learn a Crafting Manual. Manuals unlock Tempering options grouped by category.
- Choose an eligible item and visit a Blacksmith. Select an available Tempering affix for that item.
- Account for Tempering Durability. The item’s limited attempts mean you cannot treat Tempering as unlimited rerolling.
Under Season 4 rules, Ancestral items could receive two Tempered affixes, and the two had to come from different categories. Do not apply that rule to later seasons: Blizzard’s Season 11 item-journey announcement describes a different system in which players choose the Tempering affix and items are limited to one Tempered affix. See Blizzard’s later item-journey update.
How Masterworking improved endgame gear
Masterworking was a later-stage way to improve an item’s affixes using materials earned in The Pit of Artificers. In Blizzard’s Season 4 description, every fourth Masterworking tier gave one equipped affix a major upgrade. Players could reset a fully Masterworked item and attempt the process again. Blizzard’s Season 4 overview covers Masterworking.

- Diablo IV is the next-gen action RPG experience with endless evil to slaughter, countless abilities to master, nightmarish Dungeons, and legendary loot.
- Embark on the campaign solo or with friends, meeting memorable characters through beautifully dark settings and a gripping story, or explore an expansive end game and shared world where players can meet in towns to trade, team up to battle World Bosses, or descend into PVP zones to test their skills against other players - no lobbies necessary - with cross-play and cross-progression on all available platforms.
That made Masterworking most relevant after you had identified an item worth investing in: the system improved an existing item rather than determining whether its affixes suited your build. The Season 4 description does not provide a universal upgrade target for every class or build.

This is a historical guide to Season 4: Loot Reborn. Blizzard said Season 4 began May 14 at 10 a.m. PT and that its itemization changes applied in both Seasonal and Eternal Realms. The cited announcement does not state the year alongside that start-time sentence; the date belongs to the Season 4 context, not a recurring schedule. See the Season 4 announcement.

Later Blizzard updates revised item systems, including Tempering and Masterworking. For example, Blizzard’s Season 11 item-journey announcement describes player-selected Tempering affixes, a one-Tempered-affix limit, and redesigned Masterworking. Therefore, use this guide only for Season 4 mechanics; consult the patch notes for the rules in the season you are currently playing. Read the later item-journey announcement.
