The safest way to get the Blood of Lathander in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to obtain the Dawnmaster’s Crest first, then place it in the altar beneath the mace before taking the weapon. The Crest disables the monastery’s Lance mechanism and prevents the forcefield-and-destruction sequence.
⚠️ Spoiler warning: This guide covers Rosymorn Monastery, Crèche Y’llek, the Inquisitor’s Chamber, the Blood of Lathander puzzle, and what happens if you remove the mace without the Crest. This is an Act One objective in the Mountain Pass.

- Reach Rosymorn Monastery in the Mountain Pass.
- Collect the three missing ceremonial weapons and solve the Dawnmasters’ Memorial stained-glass puzzle.
- Take the Dawnmaster’s Crest from the hidden compartment.
- Enter Crèche Y’llek and reach the Inquisitor’s Chamber.
- Rotate the two Lathander statues to open the western secret passage.
- Cross the trapped corridor by destroying its energy sources and avoiding the Dawnbreaker knockback traps.
- At the mace’s altar, insert the Dawnmaster’s Crest before taking the Blood of Lathander.
Do not simply click the mace and take it by force unless you are prepared to stop the Lance mechanism within four turns—or accept the destruction of the monastery and Crèche.
1. Reach Rosymorn Monastery
Travel through the Rosymorn Monastery Trail in the Mountain Pass and enter the ruined monastery. You can usually enter through the broken windows rather than relying only on the main entrance.

The Find the Blood of Lathander objective can advance when you discover the Ceremonial Mace in the Firewine storage area or examine the plaque beneath the statue of Lathander. The mace is carried by a Kobold Looter on the ground floor.
2. Collect the weapons for the Dawnmaster puzzle
The Dawnmasters’ Memorial room contains four altars arranged around a stained-glass floor. The Ceremonial Longsword is already in place, so you need a mace, battleaxe, and warhammer for the other three altars.
| Weapon | Where to find it | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Ceremonial Mace | Firewine storage area on the ground floor | Loot it from a Kobold Looter. A normal mace or the Rusty Mace from Dawnmaster Stockhold’s grave can also work. |
| Ceremonial Battleaxe | Behind an enchanted door on the upper level | The room contains the Guardian of Faith. Taking the battleaxe starts a fight with the guardian. |
| Ceremonial Warhammer | In the Giant Eagle’s nest on the monastery roof | You can fight the eagles, sneak in, or use options such as animal communication, darkness, Fog Cloud, or invisibility. |
You do not strictly need the named ceremonial versions. The puzzle accepts ordinary weapons of the correct categories. A generic mace, battleaxe, and warhammer are valid substitutes. A light hammer is not a warhammer, even though their names are similar.
3. Solve the Dawnmasters’ Memorial stained-glass puzzle
Return to the memorial room on the upper level and place the weapons on the altars named in the room:
| Altar | Weapon |
|---|---|
| Dawnmaster Seed | Warhammer |
| Dawnmaster Stockhold | Mace |
| Dawnmaster Vaseid | Battleaxe |
| Dawnmaster Welkinglory | Longsword—the correct weapon is already placed |
When all four weapons are correctly positioned, a hidden compartment opens. Take the Dawnmaster’s Crest and read the note inside. Completing the puzzle also grants the active party members the Morninglord’s Radiance effect.
Can you skip the weapon puzzle?
Yes. A passive Perception check can reveal the hidden compartment, after which a very difficult Sleight of Hand check can open it. This gives you the Crest without solving the stained-glass puzzle, but you miss the puzzle’s party-wide benefit. For most parties, collecting substitute weapons is easier and more reliable than depending on those checks.

4. Enter Crèche Y’llek and reach the Inquisitor’s Chamber
Use the stairs beneath the monastery to enter Crèche Y’llek. Lae’zel can make the initial entry easier, but she is not mandatory: dialogue checks and other available routes can also get your party inside.
Continue through the crèche toward the Captain’s Chambers and then the Inquisitor’s Chamber. You do not necessarily need to make the entire crèche hostile immediately. The western side passage of the Inquisitor’s Chamber contains the route to the mace and can be explored while avoiding the central confrontation for the moment.

5. Open the secret chamber
In the western alcove of the Inquisitor’s Chamber, you will find two rotatable Lathander statues. Examine the plaques and set them to these directions:
- Southern statue: face west.
- Northern statue: face east.
One statue may be jammed. Apply Grease or throw a Grease Bottle at its base, then rotate it. Alternatively, use the high Athletics option if your character can meet the requirement. Once both statues face the correct directions, the passage opens toward the Dawnbreak Gate and the trapped corridor. The statue interaction and secret passage are also documented in the Secret Chamber reference.
6. Cross the trapped corridor without falling
The corridor has three barriers powered by nearby energy sources. Destroy each source to open the route forward; attacking the barriers themselves will not solve the problem.
The corridor also contains Dawnbreaker traps. They can be disarmed with a DC 14 Sleight of Hand check. Their knockback is often more dangerous than their radiant damage because a failed approach can send a character into the chasm.
Trap checklist:
- Enter turn-based mode before approaching an active Dawnbreaker.
- Spread the party out so one trigger does not catch everyone.
- Do not stand directly in front of an active trap while trying to disarm it.
- Use a character with reliable Sleight of Hand whenever possible.
- Destroy the nearby energy crystals or sources to open the barriers.
7. Take the Blood of Lathander safely
At the end of the secret chamber, the Blood of Lathander rests on a locked altar at approximately X: 1068, Y: -779.
- Interact with the altar or pedestal beneath the mace.
- Place the Dawnmaster’s Crest into the item slot.
- Take the Blood of Lathander normally.
Installing the Crest disables the Lance mechanism. You can then leave with the weapon without triggering the forcefield trap or the monastery’s destruction sequence.
What happens if you take the mace without the Dawnmaster’s Crest?
If you remove the Blood of Lathander by force, the monastery’s Lance weapon activates. The character who took the mace becomes trapped behind a forcefield, Crèche Y’llek turns hostile, and your party has four turns to stop the mechanism or escape.
If the sequence is not stopped, the monastery and crèche are destroyed, and characters left behind die. This is why the Crest route is strongly recommended even if you know how to handle the emergency.

How to stop the destruction sequence
There are several ways to recover after triggering the mechanism:
- Use the Crest: If you can reach the altar again, insert the Dawnmaster’s Crest to deactivate the trap.
- Destroy the energy source beneath the pedestal: This can remove the forcefield and free the trapped character.
- Destroy the Lathander Solar Machines: Doing so can preserve the crèche, provided you act before the four-turn countdown expires.
- Escape with mobility: Misty Step, Dimension Door, and similar movement options can get characters out of danger.
- Use the portal: You can escape through the portal, but doing so without disabling the mechanism accepts the destruction of the monastery and crèche.
The sequence is therefore recoverable, but the emergency route is much less forgiving than simply placing the Crest before looting the mace.

Why the Blood of Lathander is worth getting
The Blood of Lathander is a legendary +3 one-handed mace with several powerful effects:
- Sunbeam: Grants the wielder the Sunbeam spell once per Long Rest.
- Lathander’s Blessing: Once per Long Rest, the wielder can be restored after reaching zero hit points, while nearby active party members are healed.
- Lathander’s Light: The mace illuminates a 20-foot radius and can blind nearby fiends and undead that fail a DC 14 Constitution saving throw.
Its radiant-focused effects are particularly useful against undead and fiend-heavy encounters, and the automatic revival effect can prevent a disastrous combat collapse.

The puzzle rejects my weapon
Check the weapon’s actual category. The game distinguishes a warhammer from a light hammer. Use a true mace, battleaxe, and warhammer; cosmetic similarity is not enough.
The Ceremonial Mace is missing
Use another ordinary mace, or find the Rusty Mace at Dawnmaster Stockhold’s grave. The puzzle does not require every item to have the “Ceremonial” name.

The corridor barriers remain closed
Destroy the nearby energy crystals or other power sources. The barriers are powered objects; attacking the barrier itself does not open the way.
A party member was knocked into the chasm
Reload if necessary, enter turn-based mode before approaching the traps, spread the party out, and disarm the Dawnbreakers with a character who has strong Sleight of Hand.

Version note
This is the stable core-game route for the Act One quest. Larian described Patch 8, released in April 2025, as Baldur’s Gate 3’s final major content patch, although later hotfixes may still address crashes, performance, and bugs. Mods can also change interface behavior or encounter conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need the Dawnmaster’s Crest to get the Blood of Lathander?
No, but you should obtain it. Taking the mace without the Crest activates the Lance mechanism, traps the interacting character behind a forcefield, turns Crèche Y’llek hostile, and starts a four-turn destruction sequence.
What weapons go on the Dawnmasters’ Memorial altars?
Place the warhammer on Dawnmaster Seed’s altar, the mace on Dawnmaster Stockhold’s altar, and the battleaxe on Dawnmaster Vaseid’s altar. The longsword is already correctly placed on Dawnmaster Welkinglory’s altar.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan ordinary weapons solve the Blood of Lathander puzzle?
Yes. Ordinary weapons of the correct type work. Use a mace, warhammer, and battleaxe. A light hammer does not count as a warhammer.
Where is the Blood of Lathander located?
It is in the Secret Chamber beyond the western side of the Inquisitor’s Chamber in Crèche Y’llek, on an altar at approximately X: 1068, Y: -779.
Can you save the crèche after taking the mace without the Crest?
Yes, if you act quickly. Destroy the relevant energy source to remove the forcefield and/or destroy the Lathander Solar Machines before the four-turn countdown expires. You may also be able to place the Crest afterward if you can reach the altar.
The Bottom Line
Get the Dawnmaster’s Crest before taking the Blood of Lathander. Solve the stained-glass weapon puzzle, rotate the southern statue west and the northern statue east, cross the corridor carefully, and insert the Crest into the altar at the mace’s location. This gives you the legendary weapon without risking the destruction of Rosymorn Monastery and Crèche Y’llek.
