To get the dragon egg in Minecraft, defeat the Ender Dragon, then make the egg fall onto a non-full block such as a torch or bottom slab. The egg appears on the End exit portal, but mining or punching it directly only makes it teleport. Cover the portal before you collect it, set up the falling trick, and pick up the resulting item.

What the dragon egg is and when it appears
The dragon egg is the Ender Dragon’s trophy reward. After you defeat the dragon, the End exit portal appears and the egg generates on top of it. You do not obtain the egg by breaking it with a pickaxe or by repeatedly attacking it; the block teleports whenever it is struck.

How many eggs are available?
Edition matters. Minecraft’s official guidance says Java Edition normally provides one dragon egg. Bedrock Edition can provide a second egg after you defeat the Ender Dragon twice. The normal first-defeat egg is the one that appears on the exit portal. Because edition behavior can change between versions, check the edition and version before assuming that a second defeat will produce another egg.

Prepare the End before touching the egg
The most common failure is not the collection trick itself; it is allowing the item to fall into the uncovered exit portal. Prepare the area first, then move the egg only if its starting position makes the setup awkward.
Materials for the basic method
- A torch, bottom slab, button, pressure plate, or another non-full block.
- A few ordinary blocks for covering the exit portal and making a safe work area.
- A pickaxe or other tool for removing the block directly under the egg.
- An ender chest or a protected storage/display area for the collected item.
A torch is the simplest option and does not require redstone. You can take a torch from the exit portal frame, or bring one with you. A bottom slab, button, or pressure plate works for the same reason: the egg cannot occupy the space taken by that non-full block, so gravity turns the falling egg into an item.
Cover the portal opening
Place solid blocks over the exit portal opening before you begin. The eventual item drop must land on a safe surface rather than pass through the portal. Covering the opening also gives you room to work without having to chase a moving egg over the portal.

Safest method: make the egg fall onto a torch
This method uses the egg’s normal falling behavior. You are not mining the egg; you are removing its support while a non-full block occupies the landing space.
- Defeat the Ender Dragon. Wait for the exit portal and the egg to appear on top of it.
- Secure the portal. Cover the portal opening with blocks before attempting any movement or collection.
- Move the egg only when necessary. If it sits directly over the portal and you need a better working position, touch it once. It will teleport to nearby end stone or another solid block. Follow the teleport particles and stop striking it once it has moved.
- Identify the supporting block. The egg is resting on a full block. That block, rather than the egg, is the one you will remove.
- Make space below the support. Dig down so there is an empty landing space beneath the supporting block. The torch should end up two blocks below the egg, with the support block between them.
- Place the non-full block. Put a torch in the lower space. If you prefer, use a bottom slab, button, pressure plate, or another block that does not fill the entire block space.
- Break the support block. Remove the full block directly under the egg. The egg falls into the prepared space and breaks into a dragon-egg item when it lands on the torch or other non-full block.
- Pick up and store the item. Walk over the dropped egg, then place it in an ender chest or a protected trophy room so an accidental fall or later construction does not destroy your display.
Getting the spacing right
The important relationship is vertical: egg, supporting full block, then the non-full block in the landing space. If the torch is too high, there is no falling setup; if it is too low or not under the support, the egg can land on ordinary terrain instead of breaking into an item. Remove only the block directly supporting the egg after the torch is in place.
Using alternatives to a torch
A bottom slab, button, or pressure plate follows the same rule. It must be positioned where the egg will fall, and it must leave insufficient room for the egg to occupy the landing block as a full block. These alternatives are useful if you do not have a torch available or want a less visible support for a display build.

Alternative method: push the egg with a piston
A powered piston can convert the dragon egg into an item without the digging arrangement. This is faster once the redstone components are ready, but it requires more equipment and careful positioning.
- Cover the exit portal opening with blocks.
- Place a piston so its face points directly at the dragon egg.
- Connect the piston to a lever or another redstone power source.
- Activate the power source. The piston pushes the egg, causing it to drop as an item.
- Collect the item and move it to secure storage.
The piston must face the egg and receive power at the moment you activate it. If it does not move the egg, check both details before touching the egg again. Do not test the setup by repeatedly punching the egg; each hit can teleport it to a new nearby location.
Why punching or mining makes the egg disappear
The dragon egg is not collected like ordinary ore or a normal decorative block. A direct hit makes the block teleport, which is why a pickaxe appears to do nothing and why the egg may suddenly be several blocks away. Teleportation is expected behavior, not evidence that the egg has been destroyed.

Once the egg moves, look for its teleport particles and inspect nearby end stone or other solid blocks. Touch it only when you deliberately want to relocate it. Repeated attacks make the final position harder to predict and increase the chance that the eventual item drop will be over an unsafe area.

Java and Bedrock differences
The first egg follows the same broad sequence in both editions: defeat the dragon, find the egg on the exit portal, and use a falling or piston setup to obtain the item. The documented difference is the number available. Java normally gives one egg, while Bedrock can give two after two dragon defeats.
Do not assume that defeating the dragon repeatedly in every edition or version will create unlimited eggs. If a second egg does not appear, confirm that you are playing Bedrock Edition and that your version follows the documented second-defeat behavior. Include the edition and version when asking for troubleshooting help, because mechanics can change.

Troubleshooting common failures
The egg keeps teleporting
Stop hitting it. A strike is the trigger for teleportation, so repeated attempts create more movement. Watch for the particles after the last teleport, locate the new solid block it rests on, and set up the torch or piston there.

The egg fell into the exit portal
An uncovered portal can swallow the item as soon as it drops, making recovery difficult or impossible. This is why covering the opening is the first preparation step. If you have not yet made the cover, do not activate a piston or remove the support block.
The torch setup did not produce an item
- Confirm that the torch or other non-full block is directly below the egg’s falling path.
- Check that the egg is still resting on the full block you intend to remove.
- Verify the vertical spacing: the non-full block should be two blocks below the egg before the support is broken.
- Make sure the landing space is empty and that the egg did not teleport when you approached it.
After correcting the arrangement, rebuild the setup around the egg’s current location rather than striking it again.
The piston did not work
- Place the piston with its face aimed at the egg, not away from it.
- Check that a lever or another redstone source is connected and powered.
- Confirm that the egg has not teleported to a different block since you placed the piston.
- Keep the portal covered before trying again.
You cannot find the egg after it teleported
Search the nearby end stone and other solid surfaces from the last location, watching for teleport particles. Because each strike can produce another relocation, searching is more effective than continuing to attack the original position.
You expected another egg but received none
Check your edition first. The documented second-egg behavior applies to Bedrock after a second dragon defeat; Java normally provides one. Also check your version, since edition behavior may be changed by later updates.
Which collection method should you use?
| Method | Required materials | Setup and precision | Portal safety | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Torch or other non-full block | Torch, bottom slab, button, pressure plate, or equivalent; ordinary blocks and a tool | Requires correct vertical spacing and removal of the direct support block | Safe when the portal opening is covered before the support is removed | Low-cost survival collection without redstone |
| Powered piston | Piston, lever or another redstone power source, and ordinary blocks | Requires the piston face to point at the egg and the power connection to work | Safe when the portal opening is covered before activation | Quick, controlled collection when redstone is available |
| Direct mining or punching | No special materials | Does not collect the egg; each hit can teleport it | High risk around an uncovered portal | Do not use as a collection method |
Displaying the collected egg
Once the item is in your inventory, move it to an ender chest or a protected trophy room. Because the dragon egg’s primary role is decoration and proof of the dragon fight, a lit, enclosed display on a solid pedestal is a practical final use. Keep the original collection area covered or rebuild it only after the item is safely stored.
