To get the Witch Doctor to move in, first defeat Queen Bee and provide a vacant house.
What you need before buying the Hercules Beetle
- Defeat Queen Bee so the Witch Doctor can become available.
- Provide a vacant, suitable house for the Witch Doctor to move into.
- Progress through Hardmode and defeat Plantera. The Hercules Beetle is locked behind this boss.
- Have 40 gold ready for the purchase.
How to buy the Hercules Beetle
- After defeating Queen Bee, make sure an available house exists and wait for the Witch Doctor to move in.
- Progress through Hardmode until you defeat Plantera.
- Go to the Witch Doctor while your character is in a Jungle biome. The important location is where you speak to the NPC; his home does not have to be in the Jungle.
- Open the Witch Doctor’s shop and purchase the Hercules Beetle for 40 gold.
If the Witch Doctor is not selling it
- Check Plantera: The item does not appear in the shop until Plantera has been defeated.
- Check your location: Speak to the Witch Doctor while you are in the Jungle biome. His house’s biome is not the deciding factor.
- Check the price: Bring 40 gold.
- Ignore outdated Pygmy Staff advice for modern versions: On current Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions, carrying the Pygmy Staff is not required. Desktop 1.4.0.1 removed that requirement.
Version note: 1.4.4 versus legacy editions
This route applies to modern Terraria on Desktop, Console, and Mobile, including version 1.4.4. The Legacy Witch Doctor page lists a Pygmy Staff requirement for Old-gen console and 3DS, but that condition does not apply to the modern 1.4.4 route. See the Witch Doctor’s modern shop and version details and the Legacy Witch Doctor page. Terraria’s 1.4.4 update page provides the version context.
