For the original quest route, take a Hypnotic Crystal and a Gnarled Wand of Wild Magic to Jixo Madrocket in Stonetalon Mountains. Complete his two quests to earn the rune. In Season 4, the ability was renamed Kill Shot, although the rune item and older guides may still call it Kill Command.
Before you start: Kill Command is now Kill Shot
The naming can be confusing. Wowhead’s walkthrough retains the name Rune of Kill Command, but says that Season 4 permanently replaced the ability with Kill Shot. The rune teaches the Hunter legs rune now listed as Kill Shot. Wowhead’s Hunter rune index lists Kill Shot among the legs runes.
What you need for the quest route
- Hypnotic Crystal: Loot it from Mutanus the Devourer, the final boss in Wailing Caverns.
- Gnarled Wand of Wild Magic: Combine a Greater Magic Wand with Wild Magic Essence. The essence drops from Foulweald and Thistlefur furbolgs in Ashenvale.
You can obtain a Greater Magic Wand from an Enchanter or buy one through the in-game Auction House. Wowhead’s walkthrough describes the item sources and quest sequence.
How to get the rune from Jixo Madrocket
- Travel to Jixo Madrocket in Stonetalon Mountains and accept Wild Wyvern Wrangling.
- Get the Hypnotic Crystal from Mutanus the Devourer in Wailing Caverns.
- In Ashenvale, collect Wild Magic Essence from Foulweald or Thistlefur furbolgs. Combine it with a Greater Magic Wand to make the Gnarled Wand of Wild Magic.
- Return to Jixo and hand in the crystal and crafted wand.
- Accept Jixo’s follow-up quest, Wrangling a Wild Wyvern. Follow him and watch his attempt to tame a wyvern, then turn in the quest to receive the rune and a Wyvern Taming Wand.
The walkthrough describes this route for both factions. See Wowhead’s acquisition guide for the quest details.

Can you buy the rune instead?
Yes. Wowhead says class runes can be bought from Rune Brokers in each race’s main city. Its listed locations are:
| Faction | Rune Broker cities |
|---|---|
| Alliance | Darnassus, Ironforge, Stormwind |
| Horde | Orgrimmar, Thunder Bluff, Undercity |
Buying is a shortcut if you only want the ability. However, Wowhead warns that some discoveries or rune-related quests may not work properly if you learn the ability from a vendor-purchased rune item. If you want to complete Jixo’s quest or need its follow-up rewards, do the quest route before buying. Check Wowhead’s Rune Broker information for the vendor details.

Patch and naming caveat
The walkthrough was updated July 9, 2024; the cited Hunter rune index is dated December 18, 2024, and both pages identify Patch 1.15.8. Broker locations, item names, and rune mechanics can change with later patches, so treat those details as specific to the cited version rather than a guarantee for every future update.
