The key is to let Melus attack you with the Cursed Mace without killing him; Molag Bal then returns you to the shrine, where you can claim the artifact.
What you need before starting
- Character level 17: This is the quest’s level requirement, listed in the Remastered artifact guide from PC Gamer.
- A Lion Pelt: You must offer one at the shrine to begin the quest.
In Oblivion Remastered, improving Major and Minor Skills advances your character toward a level-up. When the bronze level-up indicator appears, sleep to apply the increase. Bethesda Support’s leveling instructions give Blade, Alchemy, and Sneak as examples of skills that can contribute.

Start the quest at Molag Bal’s Shrine
Molag Bal’s Shrine is in the countryside west of the Imperial City; an older walkthrough places it south of the Ayleid ruin Narfinsel. At the shrine, speak to Amir, offer the Lion Pelt, then commune with the statue. Molag Bal gives you the Cursed Mace and directs you to corrupt Melus Petilius. Gamer Guides’ Remastered walkthrough provides the encounter route.

Follow the quest marker to Brindle Home, where Melus lives. He visits his wife’s grave; Gamer Guides recommends waiting around 10:00 AM for him to leave and following him there. The encounter needs to take place at the grave.

- At the grave, drop the Cursed Mace near Melus.
- Attack Melus to provoke him. He should pick up the mace and fight you.
- Let him damage you, but do not kill him. Gamer Guides describes Molag Bal’s intervention as occurring when your health falls to roughly 20 or less; the older GameFAQs walkthrough describes the trigger as the point when you are close to dying.
If your armor or high health makes the encounter take too long, removing armor may help Melus lower your health faster. This is optional tactical advice, not a quest requirement. Keep the fight at the grave and avoid dealing enough damage to kill Melus.

When Molag Bal intervenes, he transports you back to the shrine. Speak to him there to receive the Mace of Molag Bal. Its broad effects are Absorb Strength and Absorb Magicka, as summarized by PC Gamer’s Remastered artifact guide. The older GameFAQs guide lists both effects at 5 points per strike, but that exact value is not confirmed for the current Remastered build, so check the item description in your game if you need its precise enchantment numbers.
